Trailer Park: Getting Weird

Filed under: Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Trailer Trash, Trailers and Clips

Halloween is on the way, as if you hadn't noticed with all the cool Halloween related content here on Cinematical (and if you really haven't, check it out right here), and it's got me hankering for trailers that complement this weirdest of holidays. In honor of the Halloween season, we're getting weird...

The Eye
We've been hearing about Jessica Alba's remake of the Hong Kong horror flick Jian Gui for awhile now, and the trailer is finally out. Alba plays a woman who can see the supernatural world after she is given an eye transplant to restore her sight. There's no dialogue, only a collection of scenes set to music, so it's hard to get a read on this one. Alba has a certain cool quotient for her role in Sin City, but she also appeared in Good Luck Chuck, proving her taste in projects is not flawless, and the fact that The Eye was scripted by the same guy who gave us Gothika disturbs me deeply. I'm always game for something creepy, but I'll have to see more before deciding if this is worth the ticket price. Here's Patrick's take on the trailer.

Gabriel
An Australian flick in which angels in the service of light battle fallen angels for control of purgatory, and apparently they do so with martial arts and guns. Hmmm. Apparently they left this part out when I attended Sunday school. Purgatory is portrayed as a contemporary city and the forces of darkness are currently in control. Gabriel is an archangel seeking to regain control of the city This is more than a little reminiscent of The Prophecy in which Christopher Walken played the archangel Gabriel, and the influence of Underworld is pretty obvious. Still, this looks like it could be pretty cool.
Horrorfest 2007
As you might imagine, cramming eight films into a single trailer doesn't leave a lot of room for plot details, but there's some fascinating horror imagery on display here, and it's all thrown at the viewer in staccato fashion. This is, of course, After Dark's second annual Horrorfest, presenting "8 Films to Die For" in theaters across the U.S. for one week only (November 9th through 18th). I caught most of last year's Horrorfest flicks when they hit DVD and regretted not seeing them theatrically, so I'll be hitting the multiplex to catch at least a few of these. Check out Scott Weinberg's post for the lowdown on all 8 films. Check out the trailer right here:

Jumper
Hayden Christensen is no longer using the force, but he's traded it in for a new super power that's even cooler. This time out he's playing a young man with the ability to teleport. His secret isn't quite as well kept as he thought, and Samuel Jackson plays a government badass who's after him. I haven't read the book this is based on, but I've heard good things about it, and the trailer looks awesome. Count me in. Here's what Scott thought of the trailer.

Meet the Spartans
Why do they keep doing this? This is another flick from the folks behind the Scary Movie franchise (one was plenty, guys) Date Movie and Epic Movie. Kevin Sorbo and Carmen Electra star. Apparently this awful looking parody of 300 is one of Hollywood's best kept secrets because I can find no mention of it on IMDB. I'm assuming this is a retitling of National Lampoon's 301: The Legend of Awesomest Maximus that Erik mentioned here. If nothing else, this preview shows why movie humor shouldn't be too topical: by the time this hits theaters the Britney Spears shaving her head gag will be ancient.
