H.I.M. Chosen for Next Bond Song?
Filed under: MGM, RumorMonger, James Bond, Remakes and Sequels, Daniel Craig
After the girls, James Bond theme songs are probably one of the hallmarks of the franchise. Yahoo! music is reporting that the Finnish metal band, H.I.M are the front runners to record the theme for Bond 22. According to Yahoo's report, Bond composers David Arnold and Don Black "were allegedly impressed by the band's track 'Wings Of A Butterfly.'" Yahoo! reports that sources told The Daily Star, "David Arnold and Don Black were in deep conversation with [frontman] Ville on the night. They love the song that won him an award. They think he has just the right ear to write a classic Bond hit with them." H.I.M was formed in 1992 and has released six-full length albums, one of which earned them the distinction of being the first Finnish band to go gold in the US.It might just be me, but what is with the 'hard rock' themes? I was a big fan of Casino Royale; unfortunately, Chris Cornell's contribution to the soundtrack wasn't exactly my idea of a quality Bond theme. Although to be fair, it did snag an award for "Best Original Song Written Directly For A Film". So while I fully get that they are trying to go in for a more "macho" theme for the new Bond, I'm just not convinced that metal power ballads are the way to go. As Bond fans are well aware, Bond 22 is still in production and updates have been few and far between. Although, there is still the off chance of a delay since script-polisher Paul Haggis hinted to Empire magazine that there were some serious re-writes on the way (fingers crossed that they have axed some of the more comical material). Since this is all just speculation, stay tuned for Bond updates as they come our way.

I thank you for using those loose quotation marks for 'hard rock', as HIM is nothing of the sort.

Who the hell are these jerks? There are a thousand better and way more important people out there. Hell, even some crappy Robbie Williams is better than this. I miss the good old Wings or Shirley Bassey days when it was actually cool to listen to the new Bond song. Shame on the product placement wizards.

At first hearing it, I hated "You Know my Name" but once I saw it in the film I loved it. So with that in mind I am willing to give it a try. However, upon listening to "Wings of a Butterfly" for the first time I am reminded of how much like "You Know my Name" it sounds.
But let's not forget that Bond themes have been changed at the last minute before so this isn't necessarily the final.

When I first heard 'You Know My name' I hated it. It grew on me. Bond's themes have had so many styles, from Lulu's The Man With The Golden Gun (Yes, it is a personal favourite.), Paul McCartney & Wing's Live and Let Die,or Duran Duran's A View to A Kill. . . I could go on.
I'm not sure about H.I.M. though. I have to confess as a long time lover of Finnish Rock bands you'd think I'd be all over them. A European friend had given me a cassette of H.I.M.'s first record years before they ever reached stateside. I taped over it for another Finnish group's music, as I don't think I was impressed at the time.
I think we might still be in safe hands as long as David Arnold is still has his mark on the song, as he did with Cornell's song. No matter how it turns out, I won't let the theme song keep me away though.

Anything's got to be an improvement over the Madonna crap they used for "Die Another Day".
Seriously, why don't they bring in Shirley Bassey to do a song? She's done some of the best, and most memorable Bond songs ever.

A) HIM doesn't seem like such a terrible choice if you take a listen to that butterfly song on youtube.
B) Shirley Bassey would be SO freaking awesome to have do another bond song. Looking her up on Youtube, apparently she's still going at it and she's like 70! She has some music video of her version of "Get this party started", which is sort of creepy if you've heard the original, but it's not terrible once you get over that. And her bond songs were bangin'.

Hell yeah, this is great news! I've been a huge fan of HIM since 2001.
@Peter: You're right they're not hard rock, they have their own sound, Love Metal.
@Mr. R: wow for someone you've never heard of or listened to your opinion hardly counts for anything. Robbie Williams doesn't have enough talent in his pinky finger to touch HIM.
These guys play shows in Europe to over 50,000 people at one time.
While I do agree a good Shirley Bassey song would be great, the new Bond films are so much more different. With that I'd like new artists to cover songs for the films.

@Tim:
"some of the best?"
She did one song that was awesome (Goldfinger.) I would hardly call Moonraker one of the best Bond theme songs.

Yeah, but Diamonds are Forever was hot. Plus Goldfinger counts doubly for just being that freaking amazing. I agree that moonraker was exactly the best, but it was at least better than that Madonna crap in DAD, which I still can't believe was used.

I will freely admit I totally spaced on Diamonds are Forever (I actually can't stand the film) but I will agree, Shirley does sing a great song.

I personally would love to hear Amy Winehouse do a bond theme. Giver her a listen and tell me she isn't the best artist for the new Bond movie.
A bond theme is a very imnportant part of the movie, it sets the mood and Amy Winehouse oozes Bond.
Just my opinion, but i think i'm right =P

Are you guys kidding me? HIM is an AWESOME band!!! Who is really the best choice to do the song? It's really whoever fits the feel of the movie and can write an appropriate tune for it. There have been so many different types of artists that have done songs for the Bond movies, so why not HIM? I almost freaked out when I read this cause I had no idea. I had heard The Killers might do it. I was not a fan of the Chris Cornell song at first, but I listened to the song separate from the movie and it did remind me of stuff in the movie and seem to fit really well w/it. Now I listen to it regularly in my playlists.
