Mark Wahlberg Replaces Ryan Gosling in 'The Lovely Bones'
Just three days before shooting (which begins today) Variety reports that Ryan Gosling stepped out of his starring role in The Lovely Bones -- Peter Jackson's adaptation (with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) of Alice Sebold's hit novel. He had signed on to the drama back in June to play Jack Salmon, the father of the young, murdered Susie, who watches her family and murderer from heaven while trying to deal with the fact that she's dead. He was to star with Rachel Weisz, who is playing Jack's wife, Abigail.Sources say that Gosling left due to creative differences, and that's a heck of a time to decide to leave! Beyond the fact that it didn't leave Jackson much time to find a replacement, Gosling had already gained 20 pounds for the role, and grown a beard. At least this wasn't a Machinist sort of gig -- it'd suck to walk out after starving yourself down to nothing. This is also the only project he has cooking (at least that's been released to the public), so I'm not quite sure what Gosling will be going with himself now.
But have no fear -- Marky Mark to the rescue! Wahlberg read the script and quickly committed to the role on Sunday. I have to give the casting powers credit -- that's a decent replacement in such a short time. That being said, it will definitely bring a whole different style to the role. This is also Wahlberg's first time in a Jackson production. The closest they have come to working together in the past was when Jackson popped up in an episode of Entourage, which Wahlberg is an executive producer of. So what say you, Lovely Bones fans? Is Wahlberg a decent replacement for Gosling?

Interesting. Viggo was a last second (later actually) replacement on Rings...

ABSOLUTLY!! I was really dissapointed to learn that RG had even been given the roll being he is only in his 20's. I loved this book and am eager to see of they can do it justice on screen.

I was really looking forward to seeing Gosling in this, but Wahlberg might be fine as well.

No! Wahlberg is really not that great of an actor, and you're going to replace Gosling with him? Ugh. I just finished the book and cannot see him in the role at all. Gosling would have been perfect.

Ugh, I just called my boyfriend about this "breaking news" as we are both fans of the book (and he loves Peter Jackson) and he thought for sure Mark would be playing the cop. THAT would make sense.

wow, talk about a substantial downgrade in talent. The film went from a true actor to a bad rapper who couldn't act if her were spotted 3 acting coaches and numerous edits.

This is turning into a casting nightmare. Ryan Gosling really was too young for the role. Even if he gained weight and grew a beard it would be distracting unless you want to accept that he became a father at 13 years old. Wahlberg is also completely wrong. I think I could get past the too young (but great) actor as the father, but I don't think I'll be so accepting of the "Shooter" as daddy.
I am thankful, however, that Dakota Fanning was not cast as Susie Salmon.

Mark Wahlberg has really evolved as an actor in recent years. He was brilliant in The Departed. As much as I love Gosling and was looking forward to seeing him in this, Wahlberg may be better suited for the part. This will certainly be the defining role of his career to date.

If cursing and snarling through his man-boy whisper is brilliant, then yes, Marky Mark was brilliant in The Departed. If one were to look for characterization or any semblance of acting skill, then no, the only thing brilliant about Marky Mark's performance in The Departed was...that he didn't sing a 1980s power ballad.

I was not a real fan of Wahlberg before, but what I have seen in recent years shows that he has grown as an actor (and yes I have a background in acting so I think I can at least express an opinion about his skills). He may not be the BEST choice, but I do believe he is a better choice than Gosling.
Rumor has it that Gosling gained much more than the reported 20 lbs, grew a beard and shaved a bald spot in his head, and that his take on the character was not aligned with the book or Jackson's vision. Jackson has replaced actors at the last minute before with GREAT results (e.g. Mortenson's addition to the LOTR trilogy). I would trust his vision. The question I think is intriguing (and one I have been pondering since Gosling was cast) is who would REALLY have been the best choice (age and acting skills) for this role. Having read the book, I am not sure I have come up with a good choice.
