Data and Chunk Approached for 'Goonies 2!'
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Fandom, Family Films, Remakes and Sequels
We've talked ... and talked ... and talked about a potential Goonies sequel, but in the past few months, it's beginning to look more and more like Steven Spielberg and Richard Donner are quietly attempting to put it together. And with the entire original cast! (Well, those who are still alive, mind you.) Both Corey Feldman and Sean Astin recently chimed in, alluding to the fact that they had been approached to work on it. And, now, Empire reports that they've spoken with Jonathan Ke Quan who confirmed that he, along with Jeff Cohen (Chunk), have been made aware of the possible sequel. He says, "We were approached a few months ago by Warner about doing it and asked if we would be interested. They even showed us character designs. It looks very cool."
They have character designs! The good (or bad) news, depending on how you look at it, is that this sequel will be animated and not live action. Empire also mentions that this could be a series, and not just a one-off flick, which doesn't sit too well with me. I don't know, to me Chunk is a little fat kid who loves his ice cream. I can't picture an adult with a child. Of course, I'm sure Chunk's kid will be just like Chunk, and Data's kid will be just like Data, but I would hope this sequel doesn't take anything away from my memories, as a kid, of The Goonies. I usually don't care as much when I hear about all these remakes and sequels, but they're f**king with one of my all time favorite movies here. To me, this is big -- animated, live action, puppets -- however the hell they decide to make it. I mention the parents and kids storyline because that's the one they seem to be leaning toward; the original cast is all grown up with children who go on an adventure of their own. What do you think of all this? And if you had a choice, would you want a straight-up live-action sequel, an animated sequel or an animated series?

If I had a choice the sequel would have been made about 18-20 years ago (the movie came out 22 years ago) when they were all still kids or could have at least played them. As much as I want to relive Goonies in a sequel form I think it is best just to leave it alone.

If they just have to make a sequel, and it's them all grown up with kids of their own, then it should be live action. If it's the original members as teens it would have to be animated for obvious reasons. And if they need to do an animated series then it should be saturday morning cartoons not movies. However, I think they should leave it alone, a sequel would have been good when they were still kids, now it's just messing with a classic.

No, they're not. Goonies is still going to be Goonies. This will be an entirely new film, and it's predecessor will still exist. I don't understand this mentality when it comes to remakes and sequels. Personally, I can't see any drawbacks to remakes or sequels. I love seeing different versions in the form of remakes. Sequels can be touch and go, depending on necessity and quality. But the greatest thing about all this remake/sequel stuff is you can choose to ignore it if you want, and your precious originals will remain intact.

Admit it - if cast right (like the original) it could work for damn sure. But Hollywood hasn't really been up to snuff on their casting recently. My guess is they would also try to make the kids even younger to appeal to a Parent/Child audience and call it "The family event of the Summer... - Peter Travers" Screw it, move on if it sucks, and put it next to "The Sting II" and "More American Graffiti"

When I heard of a potential Goonies sequel as something involving the original characters and/or their children I was thrilled. I usually hate the idea of a sequel, but for some reason this I am really looking forward too.
My GF can't quite understand my love for the Goonies. I've got her kid hooked on it now and she is not happy with me. Oh well. :D

The could do both, Make the movie live action then spin it off into a cartonn series ala the Real Ghostbusters. Overall I think I would enjoy the movie more if it were live action.
