Dumbledore is Gay -- Who's Next?
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Lists
Well you didn't expect that much time to pass before folks started having a bit of fun with this whole Dumbledore is gay thing. As you may recall, late last week J.K. Rowling outed the character during a reading of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, sparking much debate on this blog and across these great internets. So, you might be wondering, what's left to discuss? How about a list of some other memorable childhood characters who, quite possibly, wouldn't surprise us in their coming out of the closet. Yes, both Vulture and Radar went there, providing readers with two different lists full of fictional characters who could -- dun dun dun -- be ... gay!
Over on Vulture, they target such beloved characters as Fozzie Bear from The Muppet Show, Schroeder from Peanuts, The Flash (is it because he's flaming?), Spock from Star Trek, and -- here's the shocker -- Lando Calrissian from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (I think the cape is what does him in, but that's me.) Radar, on the other hand, has Willy Wonka (a fine choice, if I may say so myself) on their list, as well as Happy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Samwise Gangee from Lord of the Rings (Sam's not gay, he's just ... emotional), The Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Mr. Tumnus from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Check out both lists and let us know what you think -- is this taking it a bit too far? Or, are there characters they're missing?

Let's not get this twisted - Lando is a intergalactic pimp, not a gay. Sure even Goldie was a little feminine in his demeanor but that's all in the way the game is played.

umm this is crazy. people in this country are homophobic and quite frankly i doubt many modern americans have actually read any of the books from which these charecters come from if they had they would have known that several of the listed characters were indeed not gay. take samwise gamgee for example. sure he is extremely emotional but hey HE GETS MARRIED TO A FEMALE in the return of the king. even if those induviduals who compliled the lists were not schoolarly enough to have read the return of the king they could have simply seen the recent movie verson of the fellowship of the ring in which a scene clearly shows sam dancing with his crush. (bilbos party) are certain trait now just considerd gay inour society? if one is an emotional, caring person does it mean that he or she is gay? or has gay come to have two meanings one meaning homosexual and another meaning simply sensitive?

I find it HIGHLY unlikely that Samwise Gamgee and Mr. Tumnus were gay. Both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were devout Christians whose books carried deep symbolism in Christianity. The likelyhood that these strong christians with solid biblical values would support homosexuality in their biblically symbolic books. The bible speaks out about homosexuality and such authors would not make their characters homosexual when they believed it to be wrong.

WHy is this even a story? Everytime someone states they are gay is it necessary to read about it for days? Who cares anymore? Unless you are some right wing bible-thumper from the south, the rest of us dont care about the personal lives of others. As long as Dumbledore, or Rosie, or Ellen, or Tom Cruise are happy, who cares what the sexual orientation is.

Did anyone else feel that JKR's outing of Dumbledore was anything but a publicity move?

I also think that this is a low move for Rowling. Having read all of the Harry Potter books multiple times, I never had any inkling or noticed any indication that Dumbledore was gay. Dumbledore was an old man. To me he was like a nice old and wise grandfather. Nothing in the books would have led me to believe he was gay. For Rowling to come out and say this now, after having published all of the books and never give any defined truth to it in her books makes it look like she's simply trying to make a statement to a world she believes to be homophobic. I think it's lame for her to use one of her characters to promote her cause. I never even thought about Dumbledore's sexuality. The books never gave you any reason to.

People are very interested in the personal lives of others. That interest is fueling the reality show craze. Many Christians don't believe being gay is any worse than being a war monger, greedy or gluttonous; we're all faulted. We'd all be more in touch with God's love if we knocked out by the reality show of amazing grace and extended it to others.

I agree that far too many people still choose to be intolerant of gays, wether it's a hint in a childrens story or your childs teacher. What astounds me is that many people still choose to use a religion based on grace to help them hate gay people. Many of the religious gay haters will simply say "it's the act not the person"-all too often used to validate hate.

What? The Flash is "flaming"? Are you sure you're not thinking of The Human Torch? Or Ghost Rider? Or any of the other superheroes who have powers that, unlike the Flash, involve fire?

Erm, Sam is married by the end of LOTR and as for Lando, he's all over Leia like a rash. That he can't resist flirting with Han is open to discussion.
C3PO though, or is that just too obvious? ;)

I think some people are taking these lists way too seriously. I doubt the writers of the list were being serious at all.
Lando was stylin' that's all. Can't a handsome man be dapper with a cape?
Now I've never read the Harry Potter books, so I can't say much on the Dumbledore is gay aspect. But from a writer's perspective, I can say this, a character can evolve on its own as stories go on, snd the way the start out might not how they be when the stories end. As well, sometimes a writer holds back small peices of information about a character, thinking they're use it later but doesn't always.

Please stop this. If Gay is make-believe, this is sad. If Gay is real, this is cruel. In any case, this Dumbledore thing isn't dumb, it is sad and opens doors to even greater abuse. Sex is sacred, not a joke or a cheap way to get attention. Relationships are to be valued, honored, respected and defended - not this.

Of course it's a publicity stunt! If Dumbledore was meant to be a gay character all along, then why not state that in the books? Why wait until the series is ended to say that? You bet it was a cheap publicity ploy by Rowling. I had come to respect her, but that is all behind me now. How many here caught the jab Rowlign took at the Christians who have protested her books in the past as nothing but icing on the publicity stunt. Rowling’s hope that this statement would create another madhouse run to the presses by all media to capture new protests has passed silently, thank God!!
How much more money does Rowling need to cheapen her masterpiece series? She’s a joke!
