Owen Wilson Finally Speaks!
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Movie Marketing
In case you weren't aware, Owen Wilson's first interview since being holed up in a hospital following an apparent suicide attempt took place the other day via MySpace's Artist on Artist series. The interview itself was finally posted online somewhere around 10pm EST last night, and after watching it, I must say it's definitely one of the most awkward interviews I've ever seen. Basically, director Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson talk to one another about The Darjeeling Limited -- only problem is, they're not together in the same room. They're miles upon miles apart, and through some special effects magic, it appears as if both are sitting next to each other having a conversation. I tried embedding the actual interview into this post, but for some reason it wasn't working ... and our tech folks are normal people who have off on the weekend. Unlike myself. So you can check out the interview for yourself over here.
Of course, everyone and their publicist was wondering whether Owen would open up at all and talk about what went down a few months ago. I'll save you all the time now: he did not. And the reason why the interview seemed awkward probably had to do with the fact that both men were not together in the same room (although at one point it was funny to see them play off that). Owen seemed tired, and a tad out of touch, as if it took hours to convince him to do this. Anderson tried his best to remain lively, tossing questions out to Owen, following up on them, but the whole thing just seemed forced. That's nothing against The Darjeeling Limited -- I happen to be one of the few who actually loved the flick -- but I wish the boys got into it a little more. Perhaps I'm reading into it too much (and feel free to tell me that), but something definitely seemed off here. Let us know what you think.

Erik, to embed the video, go to the artist on artist page, click "Add this interview to my profile", and find the embed code under the video on that page. You can delete the href's after to just keep the one line of embed code.
Find it in use on my blog: http://www.crankleft.com/2007/10/owen-wilson-speaks-with-wes-anderson.html

He looked highly medicated and very lost to me. He's definitely not ready for talking to the media. I wish the media would let him be so he can heal from this. Personally I don't think he owes anybody an explanation. If he wants to fine, but he doesn't need to feel like he has to. This is a private matter. Also, he did in a sense talk about it. He said the movie was his most personal and that his favorite line in the movie was the one about how his character wants the brothers to be like they once were. Owen is very close to his brothers, and this line being his favorite could be shout out that things are not like they once were. If you read between the lines you see the sadness, regret and heartbreak that is there on many levels. I'm glad Owen's family seems to be in control of his care. The Wilsons are definitely a family that has his best interest at heart.
And this should stop the press from badgering his friends about his health. It's quite obvious he's still struggling from this video so I hope the media will leave his friends alone. And it's not like they are going to gossip about him, I mean they care too much for Owen to do that.

I am the other person that loved this film! I thought the interview looked like a PR chore for both men. Though films need to be promoted, the interviews with the actors are often awkward and look forced. All the speculation on Wilson's personal life sure didn't help this one. I thought the brilliant move this weekend, is playing Hotel Chevalier before the film in wide release. Audiences will think they got something extra, and they get to see a cool short film.

I agree with the above comments. Owen seemed unwell -he looked and sounded exhausted and sad. He doesn't look anywhere near ready for interviews, of any kind. Wes Anderson was just trying too hard. Owen needs to get out of LA for a while and find some real help.

If he looked tired, I can understand why. Didn't anyone else hear the stories of the wildfires in Malibu the few days prior to the interview. Many people were evacuated from their homes. Malibu is where he lives and I'm sure it was stressful waiting to see if the fire was going to destroy his home. He may not have gotten rest the past few days. But I think people are reading too much into this interview. I think it would be awkward doing an interview where you're talking to someone you can't see. I'm sure he was probably nervous knowing that everyone would hang on his every word, like you're doing. Last weekend he was at Willie Nelson's home and they said he was fine and having fun so I think he is doing O.K.
