Finally! 'Dances with Wolves 2!'
Filed under: Deals, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels, Western
This is one of those bits of news that I believe to be premature: a sequel to Dances with Wolves is being produced, titled The Holy Road. Based on the novel by Dances author/screenwriter Michael Blake (who is again adapting his own work here), the movie will focus on Lt. John Dunbar, aka Dances with Wolves, and family 11 years after the original story takes place. Interesting announcement, but the reason it's too soon to report is that we can't appropriately care about the project without mention of Kevin Costner. Variety somehow avoids even naming the actor-director, who won Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for the first movie. Never mind that The Holy Road replaces Costner as director -- that should have been a point to address at least -- but there's not even a comment about how the production would love to cast the guy in the role. This could simply be a sore subject, or simply an attempt to distance this project from the original, especially considering Variety mentions Comanche, the Native American tribe portrayed in Blake's novels, rather than Sioux-Lakota, which are represented in the 1990 movie. Aside from Blake, it doesn't appear that anyone involved the first time around is back for the sequel.Costner's replacement at the helm is Simon Wincer, director of the McMurty miniseries Lonesome Dove and its prequel, Comanche Moon, which hits your television at the end of the year. He also did other TV westerns, including the recent Spielberg-produced Into the West and the L'Amour adaptation Crossfire Trail, as well as the Australian western Quigley Down Under. So, he certainly knows the genre. But none of that really matters to The Holy Road if Costner isn't Dunbar/Dances. And of course, Mary McDonnell needs to reprise her role as Stands With a Fist, who is still married to Dances and has three children with him. The main plot of The Holy Road follows her being kidnapped, along with her youngest, by white rangers. Hopefully we get to watch Costner as the husband who runs to her rescue, and not some poor substitute. By the look of things, though, I'd say we'll have to settle for a double replacement.

Anyone should understand a 'Dances'-sequel whithout Kevin Costner is not makeable. He's too intimately associated with Dunbar's role and with the whole movie.
Classics shouldn't be messed with unless you are planning an AUTHENTIC sequel. It was Costner's perfectionism and eye for details that made the movie into what it was, and it would be beatrayal to do it whithout him - to Costner, to the fans, to Michael Blake's work, including self-betrayal of whoever is responsible. Please excuse me my harsh words but this is my opinion.
And let me guess, this part would be one huge long bloody war scene, trying to cover up the lack of depth and feeling, and the Natives would all speak English because the film studio refuses to do subtitles, etc. - fantastic.
No thanks, not for me.
Isn't the idea of a sequel to continue the story? To regather at least the old fans? What other purpose would there be to make a part 2 of this very movie?
I can only hope and pray there is still a chance most of the familiar faces will be present, in front of as well as behind the camera. At least the leading characters!
Otherwise, please leave 'Dances With Wolves' for what it was and is, a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece.

Can't imagine this being made without Costner, McDonnell, Greene, or for that matter, the amazing score by John Barry, which made the sweeping epic truly sweeping.
Prediction: Straight to DVD, do not pass Go.

In my humble opinion it would take MORE than Kevin Costner to set the stage for a great sequel. Sure the story follows the life and experiences of Lt Dunbar (brilliantly portrayed by Costner btw) but in the overall scheme of things, the Native Americans made the picture's value equally important. In fact Greene, Grant and Westerman's performances seem more authentic and appeared to be the choesive factor of this motion pictures story. In other words, it's not just about Lt Dunbar so the point of having Kevin Costner performing in the film without at least CONSIDERING these other great supporting casts is a travesty of the original film's impact and value.

"Dances With Wolves" without Costner, McDonnell, Greene, Grant, Cardinal, and the rest of the Lakota/Sioux tribe? Have to be titled "Prances With Pretenders". Commanche Moon may have been a literary success, but onscreen it showed up as a sanitized version of a western. Whoever thought the old west could look so fresh and clean? You can't help but wonder how the story might continue, but without the originals it just wouldn't be the same.

There is no way I would pay money to see a Dances sequel without Costner. Say what you want about the man's acting ability...that movie was his best work and they shouldn't make the new one without him.
