Guardian Writer Wants Daniel Craig to Quit Bond
Filed under: Action, Sony, Fandom, James Bond, Remakes and Sequels, Daniel Craig
Poor Daniel Craig! Even when his casting as James Bond was just a rumor, he was slagged for being too short, too blond or too "not who I had in mind (Clive Owen, etc.) as the next James Bond." Then he delivered a brusque, sexy performance as 007 in a movie that was miles better than everybody assumed it would be -- and now he's getting attacked for doing what any sane actor in his position would do. Craig has signed up to do another four sequels as the world's favorite secret agent, but Alice Fisher of The Guardian thinks he should stop while he's ahead.Fisher acknowledges that the deal "makes good business sense" and that Casino Royale revitalized the franchise. Yet "it's hard to be thrilled by this announcement when formulaic movie franchises seem to be throttling cinema. ... Craig shook up Bond's familiar character, reinvented him as an action man. If the spy is now allowed to just putter along through four more similar adventures that invigoration will have been worthless."
Fisher appears to be advocating the end of the James Bond series even more than she bemoans the Daniel Craig deal, somehow dreaming that if franchises like Bond, Saw, Pirates, Harry Potter, and Aliens / Predator simply go away, cinema will somehow be better for it. Newsflash! Sequels and series have been embedded in the film group brain since the invention of celluloid. The problem isn't the existence of franchises, it's the decline in the quality of ideas and the execution thereof. Like all intelligent people, I'm concerned that the next James Bond may be too jokey, sure -- a concern well expressed by Danny Leigh, another Guardian writer -- but that's because I want to see more good, thrilling James Bond adventures -- not because the series should end.

From a female point of veiw, I'd say that writer is out of her head. The Bond franchise won't be ending anytime soon, even if Craig had signed on or not they would have kept on rolling. However I am very relieved and thrilled he did in fact sign on.
They did such a great job with Casino Royale that I hope they can continually set the bar higher. I was an early naysayer who was won over completely by Craig's Bond. I had been loyal to the Bond I grew up loving, Roger Moore. Not to take away Moore's Bond, Live and Let Die will always be a favourite of mine, but Craig blotted out any former Bond from my brain when I saw him in his tuxedo for the first time. I mean wow! Hot damn, I might add! I fell right back in love with a character I lost that feeling with.
If they can keep up the quality, and style from Casino Royale, I'll be there for the next films. Ah well you know I'll be there anyway.

I actually agree that the deal was a bad move on Craig's part (and i'm a massive fan of his Bond).
Casino Royale was a strong Bond film, but it doesn't stand up to much against films of the non-Bond variety. I doubt a Bond film ever will again, unfortunately. It's too entrenched in its formula, even the "fresh start" of Royale didn't stray too far from it.
The only chance Craig has of making this deal work well for his career (critically, as opposed to financially) is to push for a new writing staff. Purvis and Wade aren't exactly dynamite talent, yet they keep getting the job. I don't really rate Haggis either, although i guess when you're hired to polish a fundamentally bland script, you probably aren't going to be able to get much more out of it.

Well, that's done it, one loon from 'The Guardian' (your first clue) says that Daniel Craig should not make any more James Bond movies. I'm sure Daniel Craig and all the studios are running to make the demands of our self appointed dictator of all media a reality. Right. And speaking for 'all intelligent people' is a pretty big delusion as well. Perhaps you were thinking about that very small subset of movie fans who care a great deal about the James Bond movie series. And there is no decline in the quality of the entertainment movies out there. There are still good movies, lots of bad movies and the rare excellent movie just as always.

Does she even know how much money Casino Royale made worldwide? Ofcourse they are going to keep churning them out. Plus, Daniel Craig breathed another 10 years of life into the Bond franchise.

Casino Royale was great and Craig stole the show. There's simply nothing more to say on that. the canker that's been plaguing the Bond franchise for years (if not decades) however is it's redundant, burnt-out formula:
- Bond pitted against a sinister yet sophisticated caucasian male
- Not one but TWO "Bond Girls" who's relevance in each movie varies
- Bond bangs one or both of them AND/OR tries to kill him while having
sex with him...or something along those lines. does it even matter?
- Judy Dench
- Bond wins in the end in a final showdown with lots of explosions that
climax with Bond making-out/sleeping with some chick. he might have
to kill a hundred faceless bad guy's, club a baby seal and puncture an
even bigger hole in the ozone to do it but he's getttin' some action at the
end of this film dammit.
...and that's pretty much it.
what the franchise need's is a change of pace.
- drop one or (god forbid) both 'Bond Girls'. We've gotten to the point where they're completely worthless. Or give them a more meaningful role in the film. We know Bond can get the girl. After over half a century of existence, we f*king get it. OK? you're not going to destroy that image if, for just once, there is no Bond girl during a particular mission.
- does it always have to be 1 bad guy who's the focus of Bond's efforts. how about a team, like an evil version of MI6 or a small group of Mercs. Or an evil organization along the lines of Umbrella (Res.Evil). Bond needs a counter-point. A nemesis. Someone or something that can never truly be killed or always manages to get away at the end.
- Bond can't be the only double-O presently working for MI6. He can be the best of them but can't be the only one. I mean, how the hell does the organization function with only one double-O being discretely sent to all four corners of the globe. having multiple double-O's will allow for all kinds of new scenarios, plot-lines, relationships, etc.
- Does the bad guy always have to die at the end? Does he always have to lose? Give us a cliffhanger ending; a reason to actually look forward to the end. Hell, give us an ending that actually (gasp!) sets up for a sequel. let the bad guy blow up the building or kidnap the president's daughter or whatever.

Having been a fan of Craig from the beginning of his career,(Ice House, The Power of One) I was really pleased that he landed the bond role, and even more thrilled when he proved the critics wrong. He brings a much needed breath of fresh air to the role, and I disagree that the bond franchise needs a complete re-haul, instead taking it to a new direction which has undoubtedly got more people watching the film. I think it's very brave of Craig to sign on for four more movies, but feel he has to, in order to make a real mark on the character. I was really upset when Timothy Dalton left after just 2 movies, as he, like Craig, added a new dimension to the 00. As for the journalist saying that Craig should quit, one question? Why? He's done a great job, and I am sure will continue to do so. Craig is a talented actor who, from what I understand, has a vision for Bond, and it would take as many movies as he has signed up to, to get that established.

I haven't bothered with Bond in about 15+ years. Craig's take on Bond made me interested again; saw it in the theater and got the disc when it was released. I'm greatly anticipating the next Bond film.
CASINO wasn't formula, wasn't typical, and wasn't a waste of time. Craig is great in the role and will take it in a new direction. I'm looking forward to his continuation in the role.
About the only thing I was hoping for in the Bond line was it to go retro, in terms of timeframe. I would like to have seen the series jump-started back in the late 50s or early 60s. But if it's going to remain present-day, I like what they've done with it.
