GALLERY: Spider-Man 4 -- Who Else Could Play Spidey?
A while back, we told you that Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the script for Spidey 4, but as of right now, the leads -- Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco -- haven't been confirmed yet to star in the film (though something tells me Franco won't be returning for "certain" reasons). That got us thinking ... what if Tobey Maguire decided to move on from playing the Webbed One? Who else could fill that Spidey-suit? Would it be best to go for someone close to Maguire in physical type, or try something completely different? From High School Musical hottie Zac Efron, to boy-wizard-and-more Daniel Radcliffe, from the "superbad" Michael Cera to the multi-talented Elijah Kelley ... who could you see taking on the role of Spider-Man if Maguire decided to retire from the role?

No no no. We've seen 3 movies with Tobey Maguire. Why replace him now? That's like replacing Harry Potter halfway through the movie series, it makes no sense. I realize they did this with the Batman series, but it is not really a series, because the movies aren't exactly intertwined.
The Spider-man movies have progressed, and have a story. Replacing the main characters would ruin it for me. Zac Efron? My God people, what are you thinking?

It would be strange to see anyone else but Mcguire, but they should consider Milo ventimiglia who plays Peter Petrelli on heroes.

@jg, but he's got the Elvis lip problem. What's up with that anyway? lol.
Actually, if they were left with no choice (If Maguire did retire) Milo would be a good replacement. He's great on Heroes.

My vote is for Joseph Gordon-Leavitt. Watch "Brick" or "The Lookout." He's got intensity, but he can also be funny.

I would not change Tobey cause look what happen when Micheal Keaton(sorry if spelled wrong)did not play in the third Batman they had Val in the third installment and it sucked well Jim Carey made it fun to watch but the movie still sucked.

Can we not fucking do this...please? Just let the franchise die an inglorious death. If no one's willing to stay on from the first three, than we really shouldn't dilute it by wild speculation of who'll replace Tobey in yet another shitty sequel.
Leave my favorite hobbies alone.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a talented actor, but I just don't see him playing either Parker or Spidey. Same goes for Milo, he has the physical look, but I just don't see him in the role. Two actors that jump instantly to mind are Shia LeBeouf and Adam Brody. I realize neither are traditional "action hero" types, but both possess excellent qualities to play both Peter Parker and his alter ego. Spider-Man has always been the ultimate parallel. As Parker, he is shy, unsure, and lacks confidence despite his superior intellect. Conversely, Spidey is everything Peter is not. He is confident, he is cocky, he is fearless, he is the manifestation of everything an insecure geek wishes he could be. Both LaBeouf and Brody can play awkward, geeky, and intelligent; all staples of the core Parker character. In addition, both can deliver quick-witted, snappy one liners, which in many ways defines Spidey's character. I'm sure if new casting takes place neither of these actors will be considered. If the producers want to stay true to the character though, they should give the two a look.

What's with the Franco comment? Did I miss a news story about him getting in a "certain" kind of trouble?

I don't know about the "Look" but, after watching Tobey and Kirsten mumble and shrug and roll their eyes during the publicity for "3", I'd say it wouldn't be hard to find actors with more passion for the project.

Jake Ghyllenhal is so close to Toby Maguire that it isn't an issue of who but of how much they're gonna pay the guy. They could also have gone with Topher Grace but they squandered that, and deep down I think we're all better for it. A little bit of makeup and it would be like we neverr lost a step. Actually, Maggie could play Mary Jane. That would be weird, yet oddly funny. Has anything like that ever been done?

I watched spiderman 1, 2 and 3 and to be honest was not overly impressed with any of them. For that reason I would welcome a new cast, I watch spiderman to see the action and to see spiderman on the big screen, I could care less for Tobey Mcguire and even less if possible for Kirsten Dunst. Please please replace all the actors and reload the series like they did with James Bond.

LOL@died in Spider-man 3. I just saw that turd of a movie on a flight two weeks ago and I TOTALLY forgot what happened in it. Wow...you know it's a bad movie when you can't remember any of it. That was a 16 hour flight packed with bad movies - Nancy Drew, Disturbia, Simpsons Movie.

FWIW, go with Shia...he has no qualms about being in bad movies. Joseph-Gordon Levitt is way too talented to squander his energy on something as awful as a Spider-man movie.

maybe Zac Effron is a good choice, considering how absolutely horrible spider man 3 was, he can be the emo-spider man and break out into song every 20 minutes, and sing about his inner dialogue, and the tough decisions he has to make, such as, "hmm, be a jerk, or be a nice guy."

What about that kid that plays "west" in heros (Nicholas D'Agosto)I see a bit of Parker in him. I would also love to see jason schwartzman as spidey, but I dont think that the web slinger is his type of role. as for Mary Jane can we please recast her part, Kirsten dunst does not fit the role anymore, maryjane is supposed to be some sort of model/actress and unless kirsten is the girl who is supposed to make the rest of the models look prettier its not going to work for her, that fug beast is not (cute/a good actress)please put someone in the role who can make me believe spiderman could seriously 'want' to keep a relationship with her. How about Laura Prepon(ala that 70's show)or anybody other than kirsten dunst that would work for me.

If Peter Parker can stay in his twenties (i.e.: no re-boot to the teen years)... Jesse Bradford or Wes Bentley.
Both would do well in a darker exploration of the Spider-Man mythology -- which is needed at this point!
