From the Editor's Desk: Are You a True Movie Geek?
Filed under: Fandom, From the Editor's Desk
Inspired by my last From the Editor's Desk (in which I somewhat ripped off a line from Good Will Hunting and used it during an argument in a shoe store), I decided to continue the geeky movie theme by sharing with you the geekiest movie-related thing I've ever done and then asking for your stories as well. A few months before I got married, I was shooting the sh*t with my best friend when he realized that my wedding date just happened to coincide with the 50th anniversary of a very special (yet fictional) moment in movie history. I was getting hitched on November 4th, 2005 -- and at midnight, on November 5th, 2005, it would be exactly fifty years to the day since Marty McFly first arrived in the year 1955. On that day, you'll remember, Doc slipped on a toilet bowl while hanging a clock and envisioned the flux capacitor. Additionally, Marty pushed his father out of the way, was hit by his grandfather's car and attempted to avoid plenty of sexual advances from his young teenage mother.
If I was forced at gunpoint to reveal my favorite movie of all time (and that's really the only way I'd ever pick one movie), then Back to the Future would most likely be my choice. So since my wedding reception would carry over into November 5th, I knew I needed to do something to celebrate. Not only that, but I needed to convince my future wife (who had been waiting for this day her entire life) that including a nod to Back to the Future during our wedding would not be lame and/or make us look like fools in front of 200 other people. But when she saw how much it meant to me, she allowed me to do something special -- something only hardcore BTTF fans would pick up and appreciate. That said, at exactly midnight, with no formal announcement made, my wedding band played Earth Angel and Johnny B Good back-to-back. And as a glided past my best friend on the dance floor, we briefly looked away from our partners and gave each other an all-knowing nod. It was awesome.
So, fan conventions and Halloween costumes (which reminds me -- go vote for the winners of our costume contest now!) aside, what's the geekiest movie-related thing you've ever done?

I wish I was at your wedding to have experienced those songs in that setting.
Too bad you probably didn't have for your "Just Married" vehicle the Delorean I saw at a Connecticut gas station. It even had plates that said "McFly."

Sorry, Erik, but I'm going to go even further in being a true movie geek and correct you a little bit...
You say, "on November 5th, 2005, it would be exactly fifty years to the day since Marty McFly first traveled back in time." However, that's fifty years from the time that Marty McFly traveled back to, but not fifty years from the first time he traveled back in time. The day he actually traveled back in the was October 26, 1985. So although your anniversary could still celebrate some nerdcore knowledge from Back to the Future...it's just not what you said it was.

You're right, and it's just a matter of wording it wrong. I'll correct it, thanks.

I've done quite a few movie-geeky things in the past from I dying my hair like David Bowie's from The Man Who Fell To Earth when I lived near New Mexico, to naming my cat 'Marwood' from Withnail and I,(talked face to face with star Paul McGann about W&I, though that was more of a cool thing since it's his favourite role.) and so on. But I guess one of the most would be that I went to the first Austin Powers' movie dressed up like Austin Powers.
But in advance if my boyfriend and I get our Francis and Logan costumes finished, there will be a whole new geeky moment in my life.

In a similar wedding music related fashion my wife and I decided that our wedding party should recess from the ceremony to the Throne Room/End Title from A New Hope. We loved seeing the reactions of our friends, but it wasn't so out there that the old folks were weirded out. I intended to do a wookie roar, but Mrs. OneDollarWilliam put her foot down.

I went home "sick" to catch the first showing of the opening day of Batman in 1989. I showed up dressed in full Bat-regalia (I was 24, by the way.) This HOT news chick was at the theater waved me over for an interview. I was so knocked out by her, and by the chance to get my geek on in front of the viewing audience, that I forgot about the "home sick" business. Sure enough, my boss saw me on the news, and docked my pay. Holy unexcused absence, Batman!

Er, I'm not so sure this is geeky as just something me and Mr Aberdeen do, which is, namely, quote full scenes from SF movies.
Often with sound effects.
And sometimes hand gestures and fake deaths.
Moving right along...

1. in a small, packed sports arena (think 4 to 5 hundred people) a friend of mine ran in and Yelled "Soylent Green" and me and my other friend stood up and screamed "Is People!! People!!!" (more quoting Phil Hartman from his classic SNL skit then the actual movie)
2. My son's middle name is Parker (technically will be as he won't be born until January 23, around the time the strike ends)

About 10 years ago I had started dating this woman but was still occasionally seeing another that I had been "dating" on and off for about 4 years. After a couple of months going out, new girl and I had "the talk" about being exclusive etc etc.
She asked, "Are you seeing anyone else?"
I being the honest fellow that I am said yes.
She said "You mean you've been dating someone else this whole time?"
I replied in a bad German accent,
"Certainly Dr.Jones told you there would be other, interested, parties."
She looked at me oddly and said "What?"
I chuckled a bit then muttered, "Nothing... sorry...you were saying?"
Now I'm not usually this witty, but I had seen where the conversation was going and planned to drop this quote for about 5 minutes before we got to this point, but still minor genius I think.
Needless to say our relationship, like Marion Ravenwood's Napalese bar, was doomed.

This is my all-time favorite movie as well. I had a shirt in highschool I refered to as my "Marty McFly" - some checkered shirt I bought just because it looked like his. Didn't have a red puffy vest though. So no one else really got it. Ok so I don't currently have a boyfriend ("then how am I ever supposed to meet anyone?" "It'll just happen, like the way I met your father." "That was so stupid. Grandpa hit him with the car!" "It was meant to be." - sadly I could go on and on... I have the whole thing memorized) but the plan is to definately work in some BTTF references into a future wedding.
Also, if we reach 2015 and I'm not in an f-ing flying car, I'm going to go beat up Zemeckis. He's got eight years.
