Naomi Watts Joins Tom Hanks in 'Angels & Demons?'

Though production was just pushed back due to Akiva Goldsman's script not being ready, it appears casting for Angels & Demons is still moving ahead. According to the New York Post, Naomi Watts has landed a starring role in the flick opposite Tom Hanks, which, like The Da Vinci Code, will once again be directed by Ron Howard. An insider told the Post that production has been put off "until at least February," which means we'll hopefully see the film arrive in theaters at some point in 2009 (it was originally scheduled for release on December 19, 2008). Though it was critically panned and, let's face it, not that good, The Da Vinci Code ultimately went on to gross a ridiculous $758 million worldwide.
Angels & Demons, which was also written by Dan Brown, is a prequel to The Da Vinci Code. The book once again follows Robert Langdon (Hanks) as he races against time to find a hidden bomb and hunt down a serial killer in Rome. Joining him in his quest is the adoptive daughter of a physicist who's strange murder (in which his chest is branded with a symbol) sparks a hunt for the truth. The girl's name is Vittoria, and we presume this is who Watts will be playing ... though Watts is not Italian, and doesn't exactly fit the character description. However, she is a high profile name and a damn good actress, so it'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. Watts is also attached to star in the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, which is currently eying a Summer 2009 release. For those that have read Angels & Demons, is Watts what you had in mind for Vittoria? Good choice? Bad one?

Naomi Watts? Love her long time, but no. I can't think of a big enough name that actually fits the character as described. Maybe Angelina?
Not that I'm all worked up about it. Angels and Demons is an even sillier potboiler than DaVinci Code. I happened to read it right when the Pope died, which tied in with the book in a cool way. But I haven't thought about it since.

Well, Vittoria was described as a dark-haired Italian girl, Watts seems to fit only the "girl" part of the description, so in my mind, she's a bad choice

Watss will be a fine choice. Let's see - a dark haired Italian girl. Well, she can certainly dye her blond locks to be dark and with dark hair and an accent (which she is good at) she can pull it off. Come on, it's not rocket science. It's acting.

Really, it's two questions. Does Naomi match the image that Dan Brown laid out in his hack-tastic prose? Not at all. I am trying to recall the moment we are introduced to Vittoria....her supple bronzed legs, slim waist, high firm bosom, pouty lips, etc etc...like she was spit out of detective novel-o-matic or something!
I guess I'm saying there's nothing there to "live up to." Any good actress could do this role, and Naomi's one of the best.

Casting Watts can't be any worse than a long-haired and bored Tom Hanks in the lead role.

Sequel? This should be billed as a prequel. Angels & Demons was published before The DaVinci Code and in my opinion was a better book. Naomi is OK, but how about going outside the box for once. I think Laura Prepon, who was Donna on That 70's Show, would have been an excellent choice. Pouty lips indeed!

Just dye her hair dark and she will look Italian...Vittoria had green eyes anyway...Luke Wilson would have made a good Robert Langdon. I love Tom Hanks, but he was so miscast and not very good in DaVinci Code.

I don't know what they are talking about. The Da Vinci Code was a good movie, maybe not great, but it was pretty good. They only people who didn't like it were those who didn't understand or who didn't have patience to sit and watch it. As for Angels and demons, I think it will be much better only because the book was better than The Da Vinci Code and it's not filled with as much controversy. Now for Watts, well, I'll wait and see. I hated Tom Hanks as Robert in the first place, but I ended up loving him.

Have to admit I'm disappointed about Naomi Watts. She is an incredibly talented actress, but definitely NOT Vittoria. Angelina Jolie would have been my first choice - physically, she looks much more like Vittoria is described in "A&D", plus she also has the passion and intelligence and strength that were so important to the character. "Angels & Demons" was far superior to "The DaVinci Code" - I just hope that they do it justice!

Initially, my friend and I had a mutual distaste for The Da Vinci Code. I was so bored that the only way I could follow it was becuase of the book. It is now one of my favorite movies since I realized where Ron Howard was going with it.
If Watts is Vettra she will either ruin the character or nail it, no in between.
I think the buffoon who said Donna from that 70's show needs a psychiatric evaluation. Penelope Cruz couldn't act in a movie about Penelope Cruz. I think they are trying to take it in a different direction than The Da Vinci Code, all those actors were ethnically exact and it didn't work. There is one problem, both books have the same plot except for the bomb. Beautiful daughter loses her father mysteriously and teams up with a Harvard symbologist and is semi-based on fact. Oh, and to aggravate the bible thumpers, I believe Jesus was a mere mortal. As Teabing said, "the good book did not arrive by facsimile from heaven!"

"Not that good..." Oh my, it was a spectacular film! For anyoen who questions the truth and validity of the church's view on women and anyone who prefers to believe that Jesus Christ was "just a man" this movie said it all. I loved it. My husband and I were there at opening night through the protestors for DaVinci Code and we can't wait for Angels and Demons.

This fiction was based on the gnostic gospels, which were proved to be untrue (fraud). Don't confuse Christ with any of this.
