Moviefone's Best Christmas Movies of All Time
Filed under: Classics, Best/Worst, Hold the 'Fone
The Christmas season is a time for celebration, family and, of course, watching copious amounts of Christmas movies. Like any true movie buffs would, the editors at Moviefone honored the holiday by watching Christmas movies for days and days -- everything from lumps of coal/rancid turds such as Surviving Christmas and Reindeer Games (thanks for nothing, Ben Affleck!) to glorious cinematic gifts such as It's a Wonderful Life and Elf -- to bring you the definitive list of the 25 Best Christmas Movies ever to grace the silver screen. (Sorry, Grinch and Rudolph aficionados, no TV specials or made-for-TV movies here.)
Rather than ruin the surprise and unwrap the full list right now, however, Moviefone is providing trivia clues to the identity of each film and revealing just one movie every day until we unveil No. 1 on Christmas Eve. It's kind of like an Advent calendar for cinema buffs. So place your guesses to the mystery movies here, and have a very merry Christmas.

"The Waltons: A Homecoming", is a great Christmas movie, but I think it was made for television. How about "Yours, Mine, and Ours", with Henry Fonda and Lucy Ball, or "While You Were Sleeping"?. At least "Christmas With the Cranks" didnt make the list! That movie was HORRIBLE!

That fact that you're even considering movies like Reindeer Games has me intrigued. I'm excited to see what makes it in.
But surely you must include the Christmas Classics! They're my favorite part of the holidays. Watching Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer still makes me feel like a kid after all these years. I dare say those movies are magical. :)
For the first time I finally have all 7 movies together in the beautifully packaged Christmas Classics DVD box-set! And the bonus music CD is wonderful if I do say so myself. You can buy this keepsake at any store where you buy DVDs, but it’s also available at http://www.christmasclassics.tv. It’s a wonderful gift to yourself, your children and anyone you want to share the magic of Christmas with.
Happy holidays!

A Christmas Story is the most realistic christmas movie out there and its funny, It's A Wonderful Life is great but A Christmas Story will alway reign over it when it comes to this category. Christmas vacation should also be in the top five because that was one of the best performance Chevy Chase every had in a movie other then caddyshack and Vacation, the lines he had in that movie were hilarious, the face expressions he made, and the addicition of completing the house lights, what else can you ask for

I really hate these partial lists. Why can't they just post all 25 at one time. One movie that will never appear on my Christmas movie list is Christmas Story. As much as I like Darrin McGavin, I have never been able to force myself to watch the movie at all. I'd rather see a marathon of all the different versions of A Christmas Carol rather than the 24 hours of the idiot movie.

Does anyone have 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson? Violent, yes, but hilarious. Best of all, family emerges as the winner. Try it - you'll like it! I also like 'Die Harder', as well as 'While You Were Sleeping'.

Does anyone remember the holiday movie the Homecoming. I guess it was made for TV so doesn't count, or maybe because it is a Walton Christmas people just didn't want to remember it? But it is a heartwarming story about Christmas and just doesn't get enough play. I for one play it every Christmas season and it really brings a nice Christmas glow.

Debating Christmas movies is always interesting. Fans of Die Hard, Elf and Bad Santa have a different slant to the Season. I fall into the Miracle on 34th Street grouping. One awesome but heart wrenching Christmas movie I have not seen on anyones list is All Mine To Give with Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell. Thinking about it has the tears flowing..........Merry Christmas!

Its a wonder that the "NON-CHRISTIANS" of the Hollywood "ELITE" are not releaseing a movie[I think} that desecratesHoliday season with some weird , filthy story of Santa Clause, or the Decency of the season!! Its seems like most of the time during this season they come out with something "Disparging" everything about this sacred time of year, with either a spoof on Santa, or Christianity ITSELF. They have been doing this for years , any thing for a sheckle or two.

This list surprises me. I LOVE the Muppet Christmas Carol with Michael Caine. I thought I was the only one who knew it existed. I also greatly enjoy "A Christmas Story" and "Elf". Both are funny and unusual and bring on the Christmas spirit. However, I despise "Scrooged" with Bill Murry. That movie is creepy, bizarre and mean. "It's a Wonderful Life" is SO overexposed you can't get away from it. Thanks for the list. It makes a great office and party topic.

Can't believe nobody thought of Trading Places - lots of great shots of holiday-clad Philly as well as a fantastic cast. It's also loaded with good cameos, including Frank Oz, Al Franken and Bo Diddley.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE IS THE 1951 B&W VERSION OF "A CHRISTMAS CAROL" WITH ALASTAIR SIM AS SCROOGE. "THE BELLS OF SAINT MARY'S" IS ANOTHER CLASSIC. MOST CONTEMPORARY CHRISTMAS MOVIES ARE LACKING THE DEPTH AND MEANING OF THE TWO MENTIONED ABOVE. WHATEVER YOU ENJOY, GATHER FAMILY AND/OR FRIENDS AND SPEND A FEW HOURS IN FANTASY LAND AT THE MOVIES!

Another compliment to the late Jean Shepard who penned the story on which "A Christmas Story" was based. Jean Shepard was a mainstay on New York's WOR radio at a time when TV was was eclipsing radio in popularity. Shepard's stories painted pictures as vivid as anything TV had to offer and obviously, TV and Hollywood couldn't leave a good thing alone. Kudos to JS!
