Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: Ask the 'Sweeney Todd' Star and Director a Question
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Paramount, Fandom, Johnny Depp, Interviews, Unscripted
Depp is starring in one of the most anticipated films of the season, and that's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the Stephen Sondheim musical that's finally getting the lavish on-screen treatment it's due. At the helm is frequent Depp collaborator Tim Burton; and if you've ever been lucky enough to catch the musical, you'll know that Burton is perfect to direct the dark and twisted tale of Sweeney Todd (Depp), "the demon barber of Fleet Street," who, with the help of his landlady (Helena Bonham Carter), kills people and bakes them into scrumptious meat pies. It's sort of like Waitress except with killing, crazier hair ... and singing!
There's been a ton of Oscar talk around the movie, Depp, Burton and Bonham Carter, and now's your chance to interrogate both Depp and Burton for yourself. Hit Captain Jack and, uh, Mr. Burton with whatever you're dying to know, then check back the week of December 17 to see if your question made it on the air.
To submit a question, you can leave it here in the comments, or you can text one to AskCelebs@aol.com (brought to you by Verizon Wireless). Please provide your first name and your city and state, and if you're looking for inspiration, then take a look at some of our past Unscripted interviews here. Good luck!

Hello Johnny and Tim!! I'm from Suramerica and I'm fan of both, so that excuse me if my English is not very good. My questions are:
For Tim: Johnny tried something crazy or hilarious for his role of Sweeney Todd like happened with Sleepy Hollow that he wanted to use a false nose?
For Johnny: Tim has someone mania or peculiar custom to film?

Hi! (Q: for Johnny & a comment for Mr. Burton)
I love the different characters that you do. My question is what is your current preference of character or does it depend on the flavor of the movie itself? (you make such a great "bad guy")
I'm a bellydancer and instructor & I've surprised myself at how often my preferences change, even for movements or music that I never cared for. I love working from the energy - I always let the musicians have free rein and play whatever they feel for me.
Mr. Burton: thank you for providing Johnny with such luscious characters.
:D

I'm a HUGE fan Johnny. Got 34 of your movies. Did you realize that you've made that many flicks? WOW!
How open are you to producing indigenous projects?
I feel there are so many talented native thespians that don't get the recognition they deserve. You being part Cherokee, how active are you in bringing native inspired creativity to the mainstream "HOLLYWOOD entertainment industry? I know this is three questions, but I'm passionate about native creativity, whether it be in theater, music, writing , directing, and producing. Thanks for your time, Johnny!

Hello! I come from Hong Kong. Sweeney Todd will be released on 31st of January, 2008. 7days before our Chinese Lunar New Year. A long time to wait!
I have several questions want to ask Mr. Depp and Mr. Burton. The first question is to ask Mr. Burton. Some of your movies are about Christmas, are they related to your childhood? I think you are so amazing! I love Edward Scissorhands, The nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride!
For Mr. Depp, I think your choice to be an actor is absolutely right! You and Mr. Burton are very famous and have many fans in Hong Kong. But Mr. Depp, have you ever imagined that, if you have not been an actor, what would be your job? After your retirement, what would you like to do? Do you have any plans for your retirement? I hope you can come to Hong Kong! I need to say again, Mr. Depp, you are so famous! If you have time, take a trip to Hong Kong, I am so glad to see you in Hong Kong! And please, don’t retire anytime soon. ( Don’t say you look old and need to retire. You look so young! )
Zenobia, From Hong Kong

First, I would like to tell Mr. Burton that I LOVE all of his work, my favorite to date is still Edward Scissorhands (although The Corpse Bride is a close second). Second, I've seen every movie Mr. Depp has been in and he's one of the most (if not THE most) talented actors of his generation. Third I CANNOT wait to see Sweeny Todd. Now for both of you: I just want to know what is the next Burton/Depp collaboration and when can we expect it to hit theaters?

For Mr. Depp: What was it like taking on such a well-known role in the Broadway theater and turning the character into a film character, let alone a singing character?

For Tim Burton:
What kind of thought usually comes to you when you're "thinking about nothing special"?
I don't know how else to phrase it but i'm convinced you are a creative genius and i have no other ideas to tap into your mind :_D
P.S. would you hire me (for free) to play the bass in the soundtrack of your movies (any movie will do)? :_D

[Johnny you sing very well *_* Let's do a duet! :D]

For Mr. Depp- there is one character from literary history that I wonder if you have ever considered playing. I picture you as the perfect Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights-what are your thoughts on this character and the potential for a viable film in our current society?

To Mr. Depp:
I recall on Inside the Actor's Studio you said the career you'd like to pursue other than acting was that of writing. Since your current projects are delayed due to the WGA strike, would you consider taking some time to write? I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks your unique perspective deserves broader expression.
(Oh, and before you choke on punctuation and grammar, let me say that the most important part of writing is having something to say (which I think you do). Also, if everyone had perfect writing skills, there would be no work for editors.)
If you were to write, what format would you choose? Short story, novel, stage play (oh please!), screenplay, or perhaps non-fiction (i.e., personal opinion blog - I'm sure I'm not the only one who agrees with your "big, dumb puppy" analogy!)?
