Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: Ask the 'Sweeney Todd' Star and Director a Question
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Paramount, Fandom, Johnny Depp, Interviews, Unscripted
Depp is starring in one of the most anticipated films of the season, and that's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the Stephen Sondheim musical that's finally getting the lavish on-screen treatment it's due. At the helm is frequent Depp collaborator Tim Burton; and if you've ever been lucky enough to catch the musical, you'll know that Burton is perfect to direct the dark and twisted tale of Sweeney Todd (Depp), "the demon barber of Fleet Street," who, with the help of his landlady (Helena Bonham Carter), kills people and bakes them into scrumptious meat pies. It's sort of like Waitress except with killing, crazier hair ... and singing!
There's been a ton of Oscar talk around the movie, Depp, Burton and Bonham Carter, and now's your chance to interrogate both Depp and Burton for yourself. Hit Captain Jack and, uh, Mr. Burton with whatever you're dying to know, then check back the week of December 17 to see if your question made it on the air.
To submit a question, you can leave it here in the comments, or you can text one to AskCelebs@aol.com (brought to you by Verizon Wireless). Please provide your first name and your city and state, and if you're looking for inspiration, then take a look at some of our past Unscripted interviews here. Good luck!

First for Johnny Depp:
If you had the opportunity to pick one person from the course of history to make a movie on and play that character, who would it be?
Then for Tim Burton:
If there was any actor that you could choose to work with that you haven't already worked with, who would it be?
Thank you for all the wonderful movies and characters that fill my movie collection!

For both: What is your feeling on musicals after finishing production on this one? Will you think about doing more? And on that note, for Johnny: After singing for a wide audiance, do you think you may continue signing, either for films or just for the hell of it?
Thanks and congrats on the film,

For both Johnny and Tim:
I have a few questions about Sweeney Todd, but it looks like those questions have already been asked...so....
How do you feel about your fans? Not just the normal ones who appreciate you and your work, but the ones that are the epitome of the word "Fanatic".
and
What is currently your favorite music/song/band/genre?
Thank you so much for your time.

To Mr. Burton: Artistically speaking Sweeney Todd seems to mesh quite well with your beautifully macabre style and vision. Are there any other great works, or stories that you would love to bring to the big screen someday?
To Mr. Depp: Sweeney as a character is a lot darker than some of your previous roles, was it difficult to sympathize with him, and how did you approach getting into his head?

To Johnny...
Do you have any contact with any of your old co-stars anymore? (EG Peter Deluise)
and to Tim...
What made you choose Johnny for Edward Scissorhands? Or was it just his pure talent?

This one is for Tim.
I'm sure you get this a lot, but I am truly one of your biggest fans. I love how visual you are, which in my opinion, makes you the best director out there today. I too am trying to become a director, and I have you as inspiration.. just like Mr. Price has inspired you.
My question to you, is there any way for one person (me being this case) to work on a set on your upcoming films, like Alice in Wonderland, Frankenweenie, or The Spook's Apprentice? It's a hard industry to break into, so I figure just asking wouldn't hurt. I can imagine how great it was for you to be able to work on a couple projects with your inspiration.
Well thats it, and early congrats on the new born!

For Mr. Burton I would like to know how you can maintain that subtle darkness in your movies. Even if it's just a lighting shift or a crooked doorway, there is always a looming hint of insanity or something "not normal". It is an enthralling little tag that with Danny Elfman's glorious score sends chills down even the most conditioned of your fan's spines (or makes them giggle maniacally as they do me). So is this just how you work or do you conciously endeavor to make even the most mundane into something you might want to be cautious of later (Barbers for instance?).
Also Mr. Depp do you have a hollow leg that you stuff with talent or what? Honestly every actor I've ever giddily jumped about for can seldom compare to your absolute brilliance, you can capture so many aspects without ever repeating. Especially when most of the time you aren't given a lot of breaks between movies. You are just brilliant, where does it all come from?
(Mr. Burton could you hug Mr. Elfman for me when you see him and tell him his music is well appreciated too (especially for Beetlejuice)?)

A Question for Johnny:
What literary or dramatic sources did you use in preparation for your role as Sweeney Todd? Also, as we enjoy your taste in books, we would like to know what your current favorite reads are.

for Johnny Depp:
I think that at this point all your dream have become true, or not? What were your dreams when you were a teenager and what would you suggest to someone who don't know even how to start to make these dreams become true?
for Tim Burton:
You are a successful director and screenwriter, but you should have started you career somehow! What would you say to a 16 years old girl who wants someone read her screenplay?
Thanks (and sorry for my english),
Elisa, Italy

Hey, we are IFOD, your italian fanclub! We were the masked girls who waited 10 hours for you on the red carpet at venice 2007 movie festival (this is ours photo! http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1731/chibideppconvention1az5.jpg ), we have a question for you!
We love masks as you can imagine, so.. why do you always choose roles with characters in costume?? Is this something you like or it's just a casualty?

To both-
Tim, you really seem to get off on covering Johnny in blood. Johnny, you seem to always want to hide behind things...prosthetics, wigs, dentures, etc.
It only seems natural that you guys would you consider collaborating on a movie where johnny is just one giant hematoma. I imagine him looking something like the blob.
Would you consider hiring me to do his make-up? Or can I do the sound effects?! I can gurgle really good! You should hear me gurgle! Really! I can act too...
:)

Wow, I think this is the closest I will ever get to either of you. I am a fan of both of you. I am old enough to be Johnny's mom....almost, LOL But still have POTC stuff all over my home. My question today has nothing to do with your profession. Brad Pitt is starting a project in New Orleans 9th district to build "green" homes. I dont have a lot of money but i just sent a donation. I was wondering if either of you might get involved?

Is it something you have ever been interested in? What kind of projects do you see your professional relationship taking on in the next ten years? You are both truely amazing at what you do, its such and inspiration, I would love to here your stories one day!
