'The Dark Knight' Teaser Poster!

And all I gots to say is it's about damn time. We've seen photos, teaser trailers, behind-the-scenes production video and more viral websites than I care to count, but now we have an official teaser poster. And it's ... well ... okay. After all that we've seen in the past few months, I kind of feel like the teaser poster is very anti-climactic. This should've been the first thing to get released online; wayyy before we even knew what The Joker looked like. As it stands now, we get a poster that looks like a third-grade student spray-painted shapes on a brick wall. And yet, I still dig it. The Dark Knight is clearly one of my most anticipated films of 2008, and based on all we've seen (and heard) so far, I cannot for the life of me see this film disappointing the masses. First comes the teaser poster. Then comes the full-length trailer (short film thingy). And then ... we wait. 750 viral sites later and -- presto -- the flick shall arrive in our laps on July 18.

We're going to get a Joker scene before we get a full length trailer. Now I'm starting to worry that maybe we're getting TOO much of The Joker. By the time the film arrives in theaters there is going to be so much footage revealed, it leaves little surprise. They should have utilized the joker deck card more effectively. Gets the point across that TDK is all about the Joker, without bombarding us with actual pictures and images of Ledger portraying him. Keep those things more guarded. Too late now I guess.

Yea, it's starting to feel more like a Joker movie, than a Batman one.

the real prize is that people in select cities got free tickets to see the first ten minutes in IMAX....so even though the poster is a minor let-down...those of us in the select like..five cities are pretty happy!

I heart what you said about the poster looking like a 3rd grader has done it. I actually had to reread your column to make sure the poster was not a joke. I know many Batfans have unrealistic expectations of TDK but not me and I think it will help me not getting disappointed. I loved Begins so much because I wasnt on forums or getting so fired up about it. I was so pumped for Spiderman 3,Matrix 2 and 3,Pirates of the Caribbean and they were alright. I end up loving Ratataouille better and I didnt have faith in Michael Bay for Transformers and I end up being entertained by it. You get my point.

hopefully, TDK is not a repeat mistake of the previous Burton Batman where the Joker stole Batman's thunder. Im tired hearing all about Ledger and the Joker these days and all the TDK actors preaching to us how brilliant and creepy Ledger is.

I love this poster. It's a fantastically playful image, evocative of the kind of nightmarishly childish self-obsession of psychotics and sociopaths.
At the same time, on a graphic design level, it's wonderfully clever the way it references both Batman and the Joker with such a sparse visual language.
I'm not without critique though. I'd lose the already-worn "why so serious" line AND the title of the film. It should have been just the image, with July 2008 very faint at the bottom. The image says it ALL. The typography reeks of PR people worrying over details that nobody needs. After all, it is a teaser poster - there will be plenty of time to cram the details down our brain-tubes later on.

Thad is more correct than the previous 5 comments. Like it's often said, "it's easier to make something cheap look professional then it is to make something professional look cheap"
