'Cloverfield' Marketing Gets Weirder

Don't get me wrong, I love a film that makes me want to drop several tabs of acid, but some of this Cloverfield marketing is a little too odd. Bunch of kids running around Manhattan, trying to escape from a monster? Okay, I get that. This whole Slusho thing? No idea. For those of you following the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign closely, you should already be aware of Slusho. It's some sort of drink that's somehow tied into the movie; it's already appeared in episodes of Heroes (for some odd reason) and now a new commercial for the drink is online. I have no idea what Slusho (whose tagline is: "You Can't Drink Just Six") has to do with Cloverfied, but I imagine the two will join forces when the film finally arrives in theaters on January 18, 2008. Is the Cloverfield monster also going to factor into the Heroes television series? Got me. But I wouldn't put anything past viral marketing guru J.J. Abrams -- he really knows how to suck you in, keep you in and then give you nothing. I kid, I kid. Anyway, check out the new Slusho commercial after the jump. Additionally, according to Shock, Cloverfield's running time will clock in at just around 90 minutes. How long does a tab of acid last?

"I have no idea what Slusho... has to do with Cloverfied"
well, isn't it obvious? just like the Simpsons movie, it will be an easy way for them to sell advertising space to 7-11...
duh!

Hmm a monster movie and a Japanese commercial. It's obvious it's a Godzilla movie. :)

A tab may last you far longer than 90 minutes, closer to 6 hours. It's a commitment, man.

Heh. Well Erik I'm no Cloverfield fan-boy myself, but I did find, during a brief perusal of the associated viral websites, some link between Slusho and some off-shore drilling company/pharmaceutical company/biogenetics company. I kid you not. Apparently in addition to creating Slusho, the aforementioned conglomerate also is likely inserting something they found on the ocean floor into Slusho. Which may or may not be turning people into monsters in the movie, depending on which group of fanboys you believe. Me? I think its a Godzilla rip-off. Call me jaded.

Hmm... I think, having seen the humpback whale mutant monster and ticks, that this Slusho product is part of the "where did it come from" puzzle. I would surmise that some horrible mutagen / hallucinogen / product was made, (possibly drove people crazy), and dumped in the ocean, thus creating some hideous monster who turned up and walloped New York. Of course, that sounds a lot like Godzilla, so maybe I'm wrong, as Hollywood never would stoop to re-using an old idea... heh heh heh

The Slusho add reminds me of the fruity Oaty Bar ad in Serenity. I've never been to Japan, so I don't know if they both just happen to be in the Japanese style of advertising, or if Slusho is a ripoff of the Fruity Oaty Bar ad.

I can't possibly be the only one who immediately thought of Mr. Sparkle when I saw this...

I'm surprised noone saw the subliminal flash at the end as the monkey rides by. It appears to be a large city of stone and skulls, alluding to Rlyeh, possibly, which is the city where Cthulhu supposedly sleeps.

Slusho has been seen in other JJ Abrams shows such as Alias.
I'm pretty shure that Slusho made it's apperence on Heroes due to the fact that Both David Anders and Greg Grunberg were both on that show and that Greg Grunberg and Abrams have been friends since Kinderguarden.

Helps the Grunberg will have what is being described as a "small" role in Cloverfield so it was a no brainer than Slush would appear in Heroes.

I happened upon a production illustration depicting the monsters from Cloverfield. I've posted in on my blog for those that want a clearer look than currently provided in the trailer.

just from the searching around the last couple of hours (my step-daughter is having a friend sleep over & i ain't got much of a life anyway :P ) the big tie-in is from a company called Tagruato and Slusho is a product from one of their divisions. if you click a site link for 'deep-sea' drilling you will find a map of several sites with a location in the atlantic that isn't too far off from n.y.c. more viral marketing...
