'Speed Racer' Pics Arrive Online!

USA Today has nabbed the first look at several new photos from this summer's Speed Racer, directed by The Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix Trilogy). The photos are trippy as all hell, and they help to give you a tiny taste of what you're in store for when this film finally arrives in theaters on May 9, 2008. On the surface, one might think the Wachowskis are completely out of their minds. But those of you who remember the old 1960s cartoon will look at these pics and say, "Holy crap, I didn't think there'd be a way to do this live action -- but they somehow pulled it off." Because that's what I was thinking. And I know what some of you might say: "Yeah, but it totally looks like a video game." Fine, valid point, but for Speed Racer, I think you need to go a little nutty. You need to borrow from the fantastical universe already in place, update it, throw in colorful live-action characters and produce something that's real fun to watch. Based on these pics and the soon-to-be-released thing that I saw but can't talk about, I feel this film is going to soar. You?

I feel like a rainbow just raped me.
what is this supposed to be? kids film? old guy flick? teenager? who's this aimed to? what IS this?
i used to watch the series, but...i'm not feeling anything for this one. not excitement, nor nostalgia. there's nothing good about this.
now, where's ghostbusters 3?

I think the close up picture is of Rex Racer, Speed's older brother. Speed wouldn't have worn an white jumpsuit/coverall...he would be in the blue shirt and yellow scarf like the picture right about the close up one.

Kuri-But what is he doing in the Mach 5 if it is Rex? Didn't he drive a black car with an X and wear black and a head covering?
I think it is Speed and I don't like his looks. I don't care if it is him racing and he is concentrating.
Where is Trixie? I like the monkey. They got him right.

I think that's some kind of dream sequence. Also note that the car in the first pic has a "6" on it, so it's not the Mach 5.
As for the third pic (closeup), I'm not sure, but don't be thrown by the "M" on the helmet. Not sure if they're sticking to the original storyline, but that "M" stands for Mifune, as in "Mifune Motors", the company that Pops works (or worked) for.

I'm there, if only because Matthew Fox as Racer X is going to be awesome. I have a feeling this is going to go down as one of the campiest flicks ever, which really excites me.

@ XXX: Rex drove a different car when he was younger, before he "died" and became Racer X and wore a mask to hide his face. It's possible that this is a flashback, but until the movie comes out, it's all theory.
