Monday Morning Poll: Your Favorite Film(s) of 2007
Filed under: Awards, Fandom, Oscar Watch, Monday Morning Poll
We've hit that spot in December where you'll start seeing tons and tons of year-end lists. We here at Cinematical usually reserve our year-end lists for the week after Christmas, though you'll be seeing two of them debut tonight and tomorrow. You'll read about awards being handed out from groups across the country; some of which you've never heard of. You'll see names of films that haven't even arrived in theaters yet, and you'll probably even see titles that never screened at your local theater. Then you'll see nominations announced for the Golden Globes and Oscars, and the same films mentioned earlier will probably show up in their lists too. But what do all of these lists have in common? Well, that the average moviegoer has no say whatsoever.
While I've always thought the People's Choice Awards and MTV Movie Awards were a little cheesy, I dig them because they allow the average person -- the dude or dudette who actually pays to watch these films -- to vote for their favorites. I've always thought it would be fun if the Oscars included a category that was voted on by moviegoers. This way, when fat Tony is sitting at home with his family and the category is announced, he can feel like he was a part of the process too. That awarding the best films of the year with an Oscar isn't exclusive to an elite group of people you've never met, heard of or even cared about. Heck, maybe more people would watch the damn telecast. Vote for your favorite film of the year below (based on what was popular at the theaters), or leave a comment if a particular film is not mentioned. Let's try to see how close (or far apart) the moviegoers and critics really are ...

May favorite so far this year was actually ‘Stardust’. I was blown away by how fun the movie was, and I really felt some genuine emotion for the characters. Other top films include ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ and ‘Zodiac’.
Of course, there's still so much that I haven't seen this year that I'm not ready to make a “Best of 2007” list yet. I'm waiting till I see ‘Lust, Caution’, ‘Atonement’, ‘My Blueberry Nights’, and ‘No Country for Old Men’ before I make such a list.

The best movie of the year so far is a lil Irish film called "Once" starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. It's the first musical that doesn't feel like one. I loved how director John Carney provided viewers with such realism in both the story and character development. It's just an amazing movie. I hope more see this on DVD come Decemeber 18th.

None of those movies were my favorite of the year, although Knocked Up did make my top 10 list. My favorite movie of 2007 was 3:10 to Yuma.

Of the ones listed as choices, Knocked Up. Followed by 300 and Spidey 3.
I saw Once and really liked it, but I think it came out last year and then was re-released here this year. Might as well put this on your Must See list, since there were so few films worthy of that title.

As a film blog, why only list the huge "aaa blockbusters" in the poll, when most of your readers are smart enough to have looked elsewhere for better movies this year: Black Book, Once, No Country for Old Men, etc. etc.
If there is such huge buzz around how good Once is, why not list it, and list an atrocity like "Norbit", is this a comedy piece?

It's got to be Once. What an amazing film. Musical in a non-typical sense.

I really liked Waitress. I don't know if it was too small to be recognized (and it looks like it was) but it was probably my favorite movie this year.

Hot Fuzz was the greatest comedy I've ever seen. Nothing this year can beat it. Many great films tried though.

I haven't made a formal list, but for months I've been telling people the documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is my favorite. Who would have thought such intriguing characters and compelling drama could arise from an ape, a plumber, and a bunch of barrels?
