Moviefone's Top 50 Films of 2007
When it comes to lists, Cinematical likes to keep things brief. Some of you think the alliterative Cinematical Seven is a bit too small when it comes to movie lists. I can't count the times I've been asked to up my list to 10 to add a few here or there, which is why I try to refrain from titling them with words like "best." There is always something missing. However, I imagine it would be harder to miss something if you upped the count to 50, and make it a list spanning only one year. Yes, this is what Moviefone has done. Out of the few hundred movies that were released this year, they've come up with their Top 50 of 2007.Starting off the list is Transformers, which our own Erik Davis described as "one of the biggest, baddest action flicks we've seen in a long time." From there, well, you can guess most of the films that made the list -- they're the big blockbusters that people flocked to, like 300, and the art flicks smaller groups raved about, like Lars and the Real Girl. Of course, I don't know if I'd keep all of the contenders in this best-of list (Hairspray); however, we're not talking about a list of 10, so not every film can be wondrous. The list is mainly North American offerings, although you will spot a few of the international biggies like The Lives of Others and Lust, Caution.
Check out the list and weigh in: did they get it right? Are there some glaring omissions? Travesties that shouldn't be on any list with the word "best" in it?

We own the Night...FABULOUS MOVIE!!! Yet not on the list...and Walk Hard no less? What nonsense is this? We need to shove Walk Hard into a pot boil it and let it evaporate in to our atmosphere so it's never a thought again!

Sorry. No "Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" makes me assume that the people who put this list together either didn't see everything on the list and just made it up based on Rotten Tomatoes scores or just have no taste in film. Seriously, Transformers, I am Legend, 300, Breach and The Simpsons Movie are better films than Jesse James. Please. Completely worthless list for that oversight.
Or maybe they just forgot?

Would the compilers of this list please explain the absence of Amazing Grace? For my money, it was the best film of the year. In particular, Michael Gambon should be a lock for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. A brilliant film.

In my life (61 years old so far), I have only walked out on 2 movies before "the end". One was back in the 70s. The other was this year. The movie? "Knocked Up". I just don't know people who use the kind of language that spewed from just about every scene. The movie was not only unlikely, but predictable. Some may find the new "free sex", prompted by Bill Clinton's legacy, entertaining. I don't. A huge waste of money. Fortunately the theater gave me my money back. They understood. Yet, the "experts" on this site rate it as one of the top 15 in 2007. If you use this kind of language in everyday conversation, I really feel sorry for you. Please work on expanding your vocabulary.

I fail to see how Waitress can be considered a comedy. It was a disturbing and sad movie about a woman caught in a relationship that was difficult at best. It had a few funny moments, but abuse is not funny in my book.

How did I Am Legend rank above Transformers? I Am Legend was one of the worst movies of the year, and Will Smith's worst movie (although a good performance) since Wild Wild West.
Also, where was Reign Over Me, or do you guys, like most critics, throw out of contention any movie with Adam Sandler?

How did Fido get overlooked? A great spoof of a legend (Lassie), and very entertaining.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is TERRIBLE. The experience was as bad as Open Water, Son of The Mask and White Chicks. I'm NOT kidding.
I'm sorry but anyone that thinks NCFOM is clever or deep is certifiably insane.
I've literally seen hundreds of films at the theatre in my life and the response to this thing was something I've never seen before. It was a near revolt. I actually saw people angrily walking to get a refund. This exchange perfectly sums up this waste of film...
The woman seated behind me turns to the people she was with and says, "Bill, that was the LAST time you pick the movie."
He responds, "I'm soooo sorry. That was completely awful."
I turned to my friends and apologized as well. They were there because I wanted to see it. I had to apologize all the way to the parking lot.
Anyone here labeling it a masterpiece or thinking it's a textured, complex film couldn't be more wrong. This was nothing more then a blatant attempt to shatter the cookie cutter Hollywood genre picture using poor dialogue and offbeat characters. That was its ONLY goal. Creating unpredictable crap may have helped it accomplish that goal but that doesn't make it good work in any way. It certainly doesn't qualify as entertainment.
SPOILERS follow but I'd advise those who haven't seen it to read them. This could save you money and wasted time...
Killing the lead barely three quarters of the way through the movie, OFF SCREEN, may seem clever to some but it's just so irritating to most. The movie does take the tedious time to try to emotionally involve you with the characters and the story. What I can't understand is how anyone can think that frustrating an audience is good cinema. Callously killing multiple characters with no consequences, killing the lead off screen, killing his wife, having the insane psychopath villain walk away scott free (hurt by a random car wreck no less) and having Tommy Lee Jones' character quit and babble to the camera before a cut to black is as bad of a theatre experience as anyone could imagine. Clearly, my audience felt cheated and I was chief among them. Word of mouth will be as bad as gets from general audiences, not alleged film buffs pretending to posture and enjoy a film because they think it makes them appear clever.

I liked "Premontion" even though it was a little confusing. I think it should have replaced either "I'm Not There," (too artsy for me.) "Ratatouille," or "Sicko."

Personally I can't believe 'Stardust' was not on here. I found it to be incredibly original, witty, romantic, suspensful, and while a bit on the predictable side, extrordinarily enjoyable...top 10 this year in my opinion. And seriously...Juno? has anyone actually watched this movie?

i don't have a clue as to who made up this list but you are simply clueless if you gonna place transformers at the bottom of the list number one and in my opinion movie critics are a thing of the past they work for the big movie companies who pay there salaries and try to stere the world into thinking that what they say is the gospel and often times cause us to not go and see good films as opposed to what they are getting paid to push off to the american public I say when Roger Ebert is gone let the movie critic as a whole die with him.
