Friday Night Double Feature: The TomKat Edition!
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Friday Night Double Feature
While zipping through my RSS feeds this week, I found a blurb from In Style, via CNN. With the title "The world according to Katie Holmes," I couldn't resist. What followed was a word association game that shared her thoughts on a bunch of brief, personal topics like her work, marriage, fashion, and age. Between listing one of her roles of a lifetime as being a wife, making many marriage references, and talking about what husband Tom Cruise likes to see her wear, I started to muse about the good old days.Remember when she was just starting out and lived for herself? When her main interest in life wasn't the fact that she nabbed Mr. Cruise? How about when Tom was wowing audiences everywhere instead of being the tabloid face of Scientology? It seems like a million lifetimes ago that Holmes was a big up-and-coming actress, and Tom was the uber-awesome, megastar actor that everyone loved. In memory of those days, I thought it would be nice to throw a couple great flicks into the DVD player that captured their great, successful, and gossip rag-free early days.
The Ice Storm
Before popping up in Dawson's Creek, Katie Holmes was Libbets Casey, a wild schoolgirl in the '70s who makes Paul Hood's (Tobey Maguire) Thanksgiving all sorts of memorable in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm. My favorite of Ang's films, Storm stars one heck of a cast -- Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Christina Ricci, Maguire, and Elijah Wood. Instead of the regular thanks and turkey gluttony, the film deals with two families who struggle for happiness and a road out of romantic disillusionment -- all in a '70s backdrop of changing times and political lies.
But Kate comes into play outside of the family dynamic. Libbets is the object of Paul's affection, but he has to battle his paramour-stealing friend Francis (David Krumholtz) for her attentions. While her role is brief, it looked to be the start of something good. Of course, some of the work that followed couldn't even be classified anything but stinkeriffic, but still -- there's some good ones like this wonderful first role, Go, and of course, her next film with Tobey -- Wonder Boys.
Unfortunately, while you can find a few trillion billion TomKat videos up on YouTube, no one has reveled in Libbets love yet. So, here's a selection of other goodies from the movie, and some retro Katie action for good measure.
Charlie Rose Interview -- Ang Lee, Rick Moody, James Schamus
Clips set to the song "Santa Clara"
Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, and where to store your gum when making out.
Katie Holmes sings I Hate Myself for Loving You
Katie on Speed in Go -- Ignore the Dubbing
Born on the Fourth of July
Picking which Tom Cruise film would be best was tough -- in the good old days, there was lots to choose from. There's the ultra-old-school Outsiders, or the action-packed and romantic Top Gun, or even a little brotherly Rain Man. However, I chose one of the films that brought Cruise an Oscar nomination -- Born on the Fourth of July. Between Academy love and a similar time-span, it's a good match for Lee's Ice Storm. Based on Ron Kovic's autobiography, and co-written by director Oliver Stone, the film details Ron's voluntary tours of duty, and how his admiration for his country led to paralysis, disillusionment, and revolt.
In the world of clips to share, the selection is lighter than much of the film, but to whet your appetites, check these out:
Shouts of angry 'Penis' through the Night.
A Willem Dafoe and Tom Cruise spit fight.
Tom's Kovic hits on a teenage Holly Marie Combs.
A Long Clip -- Cruise's Kovic protests at a Nixon convention.
The cynic in me doubts that we'll ever get back to these old days for both actors, but one of the perks of the fine world of cinema -- you can always relive the past on your own TV.

I admit I find nothing wrong with them unless you're a tabloid fanatic. I find her beautiful and classy on her Instyle magazine and the interview was deep. Good for her for being a devoted happy wife and mother. Katie is a talented actress and can still have that if she wants it.

Tell me you did not just use "InStyle" and "deep" in the same sentence.
Also, call me a cynic, but in my experience, truly devoted and happy couples don't usually feel compelled to remind the world of their devoted happiness every five seconds.

Good point, Gina. This very forced insistence that yes, she loves her life and of course she's happy! that makes the whole thing feel even more like a sham.

I'd take Instyle,People and Vanity fair interviews than trash ones I wouldn't touch like US weekly,Globe,National Enquirer. Undercover TomKat and Open Tomkat won't drive away some critics and curiosity. If this two are silent others will also say they are ashame of their relationship and have something to hide. People.com has the latest from Parade magazine that her stepkids call her "Mom" & to me that says a lot. I smile at some cynics yet they follow every Tom and Katie they can get and they say its all over online and the magazines. Well, dont click on the news and turn the page.
I didnt like 4th of July but love many of Tom's films like Last Samurai,Jerry Maguire,Collateral,Interview with a Vampire you name it. I haven't seen the Ice Storm but she did shock my family in The Gift and Thank you for Smoking showing from nice to nauhty Katie.

To sum up Cruise career is to youtube Tom Cruise MTV award and that is one cool montage.
If Katie is a shameshe sure looks happy and hot doing it.
Amazing to see many blogs becoming Katie bandwagons and funny to see tabloids confess on ET that they were wrong before to mock and spread lies about this couple. I like how they say what a difference being married to Tom makes and that Tom brought out the sexy beautiful woman in her. People calls her classic beauty,Beautiful lady everyday,Suri as best dress baby, OK hails Katie as Mother of the year, she is an official MILF according to many blogs,She is Best Style by Monsters and critics,Bazzar calls ker Yummy Mommy, She is top top Best Style,Top ten Best Style by Access Hollywood,Most seller,Most Influential,Best Hair et al. All this Katie love and accolades in only 2 years.
Seems to be all she needs is an award in films.

Actually eugene you'd be surprised how far advance celeb sites are with movie intel. and tv intel.more than movie sites. They have spoilers and scenes from the actual movie and I can remember seeing so many scenes from the movie like American Gangster,Dark Knight and The Kingdom because of this celeb sites, fan videos and paparazzis videos. I hate it when they dont warn their readers because it spoils the movie.

Sorry to be dense but what's MILF?
The remarkable transformation of Katie reminds me of classic movies like My Fair Lady,Gigi and Sabrina.

It seems to me that Eliza, Gigi, and Sabrina GAINED intelligence and maturity.
Don't get me wrong here. I love happy marriages and fairy-tale endings. I always have. But I don't think a young woman surrendering her brain to a cult counts as either. I feel sorry for her because she seems to have given up her own values.

Gina, you know Katie personally to judge her this way? and what is your religion and can you honestly say yours is the right one while the other beliefs and religions are wrong? Im Baptist but Im friends with Mormons,Christian Science,Muslims,Jews, liberals and even people that dont know Jesus Christ. Im even friends with gay people and dont condone them.
The best example in Hollywood that has lost her soul and values would be Britney Spears ,stars vs their families and many poster girls for Playboy,Maxim you name it. I dont see Katie exploiting her body in magazines, she prioritizes her marriage and family life and is very close to her parents and own friends and loved-ones. Her values seems intact to me.
Lastly, time to netflix 'Ice Storm' and 'Go'. I heard she's good with Robert Downey Jr.in 'Singing Detective' as well.

With her now more womanly sexy features she would have been so hot with Bale on the Dark Knight.

When my religion requires me to fork over huge amounts of cash to be told that my body is full of dead space aliens, I'll call it a cult, too.

FYI Gina, America is found on religions and charities where all their money goes to it. All religions cant survive without CASH. Dont be ignorant and hateful.
