Paramount Presents Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Join Starfleet Academy'?

Talk about a casting scoop. The nice people over at UGO.com are reporting with all confidence that Tyler Perry -- yes, you heard me -- has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. According to the site, Perry will play the head of Starfleet Academy who acts in a sort of prosecutorial role in a courtroom scenario when a young Kirk cheats on a test and must be punished. This is apparently a well-known event in Trek lore, and UGO gives the whole breakdown of what happens. It seems that Spock finds out that Kirk cheated and turns him in and then ... that's about where the scoop stops. But forget all that -- Tyler Perry?! I'll admit that I've been lucky enough to avoid all of his movies, but I live in the same country as you do so I know who he is, and this seems like casting that's almost intended to be jarring. And lucrative ... everyone knows what an insane moneymaker Perry is, and this move is obviously designed as a test to see if that money tree can be planted in foreign soil.
I imagine that Paramount will create an entire secondary marketing channel that caters specifically to Perry's devoted church crowd. It will go something like this: "Come and see the latest Tyler Perry movie, in which he delivers some down home Southern schoolin' to a test-cheating white boy and shows him that the only place he needs to 'boldly go' is straight to church." Will the teaser trailer show a guy in drag chasing a pointy-eared guy with a rolling pin around the deck of a ship? Probably not, but this casting is so out there that, combined with how incongruous the other casting choices have been so far, I'm now almost excited to see this film.

This smells like a hoax. It just doesn't make sense. Tyler Perry's made some money on his movies, but his target audience (black women) isn't going to be drawn to Star Trek just because he's in it in a cameo.
April Fools?

So let me get this straight Ryan: You weren't excited about Batman Begins, the TDK trailer didn't impress you much, but this gets you excited?
I see I'll need a salt-shaker sitting on my desktop for when I read your columns.

i have two thoughts on this...
1. just because the guy has pigeon-holed himself so far with his Madea movies and whatnot, doesn't mean he's not capable of playing a different and normal role that has nothing in common with those.
2. this sounds less like some kind of stunt casting or trying to attract a different audience than it does like a famous Star Trek fan using his status to get a small role in the new Star Trek movie.
3. (i know i said two... i lied.) if they're going to get a funny guy who likes to wear dresses, get Eddie Izzard. he's funnier (if that's what they're going for), already does straight roles and has been known to make fun of Star Trek in his comedy routines.

Tyler Perry's an actor and a smart business man. I think this is probably more about him expanding himself out to different roles in order to make sure he isn't pigeonholed for life as the Madea character. He recently did another film, as a man, "Why Did I Get Married," and is probably looking to turn his Madea success into a full-scope acting career.
Many comedians have made the successful leap from famous sketch characters into full acting careers (Mike Meyers and Jim Carrey come to mind) so I'm not sure why this is so strange. It's just what actors have to do to enjoy the broadest opportunities.

What Thad said.
I haven't yet seen Why Did I Get Married, but I did see Diary of a Mad Black Woman, in which Perry played at least three characters, only one of which wore a dress. One of the roles was quite serious. He played a sedate, white-collar professional character that I figure probably was not much of a stretch for him as that's how he comes across in interviews.
There is more to Perry than meets the eye...particulary the eye of someone who admits to not having seen any of his films.
