Jon Favreau Wants to Direct 'The Avengers' Movie!

As fans continue to cringe whenever more talk of that planned Justice League of America movie creeps online, Marvel is taking a much different approach with regards to their long-awaited Avengers movie. Marvel refuses to move forth on an Avengers flick until all of the characters featured in said movie are well established on the big screen first. Two such characters, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, will debut new looks this summer, while plans to bring the characters of Captain America, Thor and Ant Man are already in the works. As of now, Zak Penn has been tapped to write The Avengers movie script, but no director has ever been announced (probably because the project is still a good two, three years away from becoming a reality). But when it finally comes time to bring someone in to helm, Iron Man director Jon Favreau would definitely like to be considered.
While speaking to MTV, Favreau confirmed that he thinks The Avengers movie is "a great idea" and that he might like to direct it. He also talked a bit about Marvel's intentions, saying, "[But] in the case of Marvel they're pretty clear on wanting to do it with the actors who've established the roles or to not do it at all. That's what they've said to me. I think it's a good idea if you use the characters established in the other franchises that then come together for an event. I don't think they would do it like they're doing 'Justice League' where it's a whole different set of actors and a whole different take on the world." Can I get an Amen on that one, brutha!
So what it sounds like (or at least what's been told to Favreau) is that Marvel will not move ahead with an Avengers movie unless those actors portraying the characters in their individual films reprise those roles for the film. Which is a flippin' fantastic idea, and one that makes sense for a number of reasons. See, as a fan, I'd be more than happy to wait a few years to get a comic team-up movie that was done the right way, like this, than settle for a rush job. And the question now is -- would you want Favreau behind the camera? Or will you hold off on forming an opinion until we see what he does with Iron Man?
Extra Tidbit: A future Avengers flick will apparently be teased in the new Iron Man film, as Samuel L. Jackson is said to be playing a small part as fellow comic hero, Nick Fury.

Oh man, way to go Marvel. One thing I hate about DC franchises like Superman, is that there are always different actors playing the same character. The TV show has one actor, the movie has another, same characters, different "world," it's lame and unorganized. If Marvel can pull this off, it would create a much more cohesive universe for the fans. My fingers are crossed.

in fact sam jackson is apparently making a cameo as nick fury in the hulk movie as well. linking the two movies right out of the bat.
dc could very well have done this, but their characters are so iconic and mean so many things to so many different people, it's hard to get different creative teams to place them in the same world. singer's superman wouldn't have fit in with nolan's batman. (but that might just be because singer's superman move was absolute trash)
marvel's characters apart from spidey and the x-men are a lot more ripe for this kind of one universe treatment because there isn't as much room for interpretation. i mean there is always room, but i think the characters don't hold the personal attachments that a superman or batman or even wonder woman does.

Favreau would be a great choice. Ironman looks awsome and the other movies he has directed (even the weaker ones) have been pretty good to great. He was always good in Dinner for Five.
Thanks,
Rob

I thought the Samuel Jackson rumor had been debunked. Either way, I am looking forward to both Iron Man and Hulk (even though I am in the small minority who liked the Ang Lee Hulk)

I think they are counting their chickens before they hatch. Sure, the fanboys are drooling over "Iron Man", but I doubt the average person gives two turds. I'm betting that "Iron Man" might be a decent movie, but it will bomb at the box office, ala "Snakes on a Plane".
"The Hulk" has to fight the stigma of the failed Ang Lee version. Unless they market it properly, they'll lose casual viewers right from the start.

It's interesting that they are taking opposite approaches to these group movies. DC is launching individual movies with the group movie. Marvel is launching a group movie with characters from already hit individual movies.
And I think Iron Man will do good at the B.O. I mean biggest opening weekend good. It's just a hunch but the first three batman movies held the title and two of the three spiderman movies held/hold the title (and the second would have held the title if it was released on a friday)

Ang Lee's Hulk gets better with repeated viewings, much like "O Brother Where Art Thou" got better for me as I watched it a few times. The problem with Ang Lee's movie was the use of Hulk as an allegory, or at least that's what I thought of it. Not enough "Hulk Smash!" for the audience, maybe.
I'm glad Favreau said what we've all been thinking for 7 months now: Justice League sucks as an idea, and will suck even more as a reality.

Yeah, this is a much better formula than what DC/Warner is planning. People forget that it's all about establishing character. If there are already "good" movies based on these individual characters....then people would be much more interested in seeing all of them come together.

Is it just me or do any others think that super hero team movies won't work... the problem with these teams is that they have so much "character." to try to "hulk smash" them all into one film and you will start to get movies like batman and robin, x-men 3, and Spiderman 3(to many characters trying to all share time)... now I am not saying I won't go see these movies but when you try to focus on to many things you get gobbledy-gook.
JLA is going to have 7 Main good guys (Super man Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aqua man, Martian Manhunter) Now that said they probably will have to be facing a team of bad guys, or a major villain with at least a few supporting villains to require a team to assemble against them. this is also true with "the Avengers" flick which in my opinion will be pretty much the same as JLA just with different characters, (Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant man, Wasp, Thor, Nick fury) I know nick fury doesn't do much but if your going to get a name (Sam Jackson/Will smith) you better give him some screen time.
Now for the Geek in us all I will rant about how the avengers could work..... Last summer F4-2 came out and introduced silver surfer, silver surfer introduced Galactus, (he told us he was coming-there is your bad guy) now in order for this to take place they will have to dip into "the Ultimates" story line.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Marvel
They already have the x-men, spider man and F4 set up no back story needed but they still will have to introduce Captain America and shield "they could use some of the story from the video game "ultimate alliance." (Movie, based on a videogame, based on a comic book?.... it could work)
But I digress, all of this hinges on whether or not they are going to stay true to the avengers (check out the animated film. its not bad) or if they are going to try to come up with a new storyline and new vision of the avengers check out “the Ultimates” comics.
