Pics of Demian Bichir as Steven Soderbergh's Fidel Castro

Back in 2006, Javier Bardem was going to play Fidel Castro in Steven Soderbergh's double Che Guevara pics -- The Argentine and Guerrilla. But then Mr. Director had to go and make Ocean's 13 first, for whatever reason, which made Bardem move on. For Javier, that wasn't so much of a bad thing. Instead of playing the famous President of Cuba, he's been wowing everyone with his portrayal of Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, and has a slew of interesting projects on the way. As for Soderbergh, he had to find someone else, and settled on Mexican actor Demián Bichir. While we won't be able to tell how well Bichir does with the role until the movies hit the screen, AICN did nab some photos of the actor in full Fidel attire. If photos are any indication, Demián is destined to impress. There are three shots -- a close-up on his face, one with a pipe, and a full-body pipe shot that could almost be confused with the infamous Cuban himself -- if the pictures weren't so crisp and new. Between these and the image of Benicio del Toro as Che, which came out in October, I'm pretty excited.
The films also star the likes of Franka Potente, Benjamin Bratt, Catalina Sandino Moreno... the list goes on and on. The Argentine follows Che and a group of Cuban exiles led by Castro who topple the regime of Fulgencio Batista. Guerilla then jumps into the '60s as Guevara makes a trip to New York City to address the United Nations. Both films are set to come out some time this year.

I am so excited for these two movies! I was admittedly blindsided by the mention of these two flicks, but I can't wait now that I know of their existence (or planned existence, anyhow) and they might prove to be very important in an election year here in the US. History dealing with Communism is a very sensitive subject, and as a result the facts are not communicated as widely (or as accurately) as they deserve to be. Movies like these help spark debate, heal old wounds and eventually help move a country past its social complexes and (hopefully) into a new era of internationalism and a continued commitment to partnering with other peoples all over the globe.

I wouldn't see these films if you tied me up and put a gun to my head. And someone should shoot everyone who wears those freakin' Che t-shirts. Che was a killer and shouldn't be made into the poster boy for revolutionaries.

Javier was never attached to this film....so you should clarify in your story that Soderbergh didn't "go and do Ocean's 13" and blow it with Javier. The film was pushed back because Soderbergh decided is was two films, not one, and for location purposed the film had to be pushed a year to accomodate rescheduling. Do your homework! this isn't hard to verify!

@ E
So you're advocating killing people who wear a t-shirt (ignorantly or otherwise) of someone you despise for being a killer?
I think it makes perfect sense. As a matter of fact, I would go one step further and announce anyone who comments on a blog post about a movie ABOUT Che is wrong and should have their opinions promptly disregarded.

Hey Eddie . . . do you really think I'm going to go out and kill people who wear Che t-shirts? I think you missed the point. I have no problem with people that make movies about him or anyone else. I just said I will not go see it and I'm also sick and tired of seeing 13 year old boys wearing those t-shirts without having a clue about who he was or what he's done. I have not seen Motorcycle Diaries as well. Did you think I was attacking you for wanting to see it? I don't like that hollywood is trying to sell him as a great revolutionary . . . .
