'Cloverfield' Viral Marketing Goes International

Last week, Peter Martin mused about the whole Cloverfield phenomenon and whether they should borrow from what Anne Thompson calls the "Blair Witch playbook." We'll find out soon, since we're in the home stretch now and less than two weeks away from the film's release. However, one thing can't be denied. The Cloverfield viral campaign has taken the fake-media BW techniques to huge levels. We've been seeing it for months, and to make it all more encompassing, now there are foreign news bites to check out.

You can check out Spanish, Italian, and German news clips about the collapse of Chaui Station -- a drilling behemoth* in the Atlantic Ocean owned by the company who also owns Slusho. Each news clip has the same recorded video, with different news spins on the piece. My favorite is the Spanish lady, who looks completely unphased by the news and looks like she could be commenting on the latest stock prices or clothing brand. Gotta love stoic correspondence. The newscasters must all be so set on being serious that they don't notice the monster swimming away from the rig, presumably right to New York so he can rip the head off of the Statue of Liberty. One thing is for sure, the dude/dudette is a good swimmer!

Bilingual folks -- go nuts! The clips are after the jump...

*Fixed thanks to Maria, who is better than my crappy spell-checker.

To make things easier, SlashFilm has translations of a few of the clips. You can check out the German translation below, and hop over there for the Spanish translation. The site also has some stuff from the MySpace page of Rob (the film's main character) who, it appears, landed a job at Slusho and is in the process of moving to Japan at the beginning of the film. Thus, the going away party in all the trailers.

Just to make the pot even more sweet for those of you eating this viral campaign up with a spoon -- a "press release" was issued commenting on the collapse, and they have a special foreign telephone number "for further instructions" -- +81-3-5403-6318. Has anyone called it?

German Video Translation:

About 1300 km from the coast of New York 3 days ago a drilling did sink for unknown reasons. recently we got dramatic pictures from the colapse of the platform by international news agencys. (man screams stuff i can't understand) The videos show the sinking of Inexplicable reasons which is also for experts hard to understand. at the moment of the disaster 355 workers were on board. the chuai platform was opened in september 2007 and is one of the biggest drillings in the world. it is operated by the big japanese company tagruato wich has it's central in tokyo. the high advanced drilling system was planned by the company zwichau engeneering in leipzig (leipzig is an east-german town) under the leadership of the graduated engineer dominik möltken. we asked him if the colapse could be caused by a construction mistake. dominik möltken:"from structural reasons there are no evidences that a failure of the basic structure or of one of the security systems could cause such a catastrophe. this is just impossible. this is physically not possible."

although the videos are of very poor quality it seems as you can notice a gun fire from the platform. in the past tagruato was already accused to have a big private army and experts investigate at the moment if the escape-behaviour of the crew is caused by a para-military attack.

actuall news report that people where killed, but tagruatos spokesman denies that. Yet it is unclear if germans were on board.
