Early Reactions: 'Cloverfield'

Dude.
I'm still trying to comprehend the film I just watched. It really is like no other monster movie you've ever seen. You know those warnings they give people before going on a rollercoaster (might not be safe for pregnant women, people who have motion sickness, etc ...) -- well, they should give the same warning before watching Cloverfield. It's not a film; it's sort of like an experience. And being able to watch this movie with a New York City crowd was pretty special. There was no random fanboy cheering at any point; frankly, I don't think people had time to cheer because once the film goes ... it goes ... and it goes ... and it will freak you the hell out.
My wife even liked this film, and she hates all things science fiction. She's more of a hardcore drama gal; people killing themselves, killing each other -- that sort of thing. So her liking this movie is huge. I won't go on much longer because I refuse to spoil it for you, but trust me when I say Cloverfield is worth the hype. You'll need to adjust to the shaky cam (won't take longer than 15 minutes, at least for us it didn't), it's a tad melodramatic (but it works because you care about the characters more), New Yorkers will have to suck it up a bit (Spring to 59th in heels?) and you'll need to realize that you won't be spoon-fed the usual Hollywood bullsh*t along the way. Picture you and your friends hanging out one night. Someone has a movie camera. Something attacks the city ... and you're off. That's it. That's the setup. Now strap yourself in, hold on tight and enjoy the ride.
It's wonderful, it's frightening and it's truly a breath of fresh air. Serious props go out to director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams. Cloverfield ... you have finally won me over. Stay tuned to Cinematical for our official review later this week.
P.S. Weinberg here! As the biggest horror geek on the Cinematical crew, I would like to (enthusiastically) agree with the comments and opinions of Mr. Davis and his lovely wife. This is one of the coolest monster movies I've ever seen. And I freaking LOVE monster movies.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. I agree 110% I saw an early screening tonight and I'm blown away. Even if I wanted to describe the monster I don't think I could. Once it gets going it doesn't stop, absolutely amazing. Will be seeing it this friday as well!

I'm really happy to hear all the positive reviews on this. A movie that deserves its hype? Serious?

I hope your review is accurate -- the last thing I want to see is a "Blair Witch Monster" type of movie!

I too had the chance at an early screening tonight, and all I have to say is forget blair witch and forget godzilla. I was speechless when the movie ended, wow, amazing.

Cloverfield. The greatest thing since "Monster-In-Law" (bahaha).
Nice to see that the "Star Trek" trailer was attached to it too, can't wait for that one..
Any info on what that guy was saying in the alley about 2/3 through in some foreign language, or the final whispers, after the credits? :D

How shaky is the shaky camera? The camera in 28 Weeks Later to be so disorienting I couldn't enjoy the movie. And I found the camera in most recent Bourne movie to be very distracting, thought not as bad as it was in 28 Weeks Later. So where on the range of shaky are we talking? Cause honestly I don't think I want to sit through something shakier than Battlestar Galactaca.

*Spoilery stuff*
It wasn't bad, but there were a lot of let-downs for me.
Just some random thoughts ...
- Creature design was pretty weak. Just didn't seem alien enough. Seemed like what you would get with a KingKong/Godzilla offspring. Plus, I thought the flick revealed a little too much of the creature towards the end of the film.
Although, I thought the parasite thingys were done quite well ... basically reminded me of canine-sized facehuggers.
- How shaky is the camerawork? Very. I even made the effort to sit further back in the theater than usual. It still was a little jarring.
- Also thought there were too many "hollywood" moments. It is a movie though, so I understand their decisions.
- Loved the results of the bite victims ... a very cool idea. Wish it had been explored more.
-Thought the comic relief of Hud's comments was a little forced.
Like I said ... not a bad movie ... but I was simply hoping for more.

I thought Bourne 2 was far shakier than Bourne 3. The camera work in Bourne 2 bothered me to the point of distraction. I didn't notice much at all in Bourne 3.

I got back from a screening last night.
A few bullet points to cover everything pertinent without wasting anyone’s time.
* I recommend you see it. It is an extremely well done movie, 99% of my criticisms of it would be nit picking (like how there is no token fat friend and everyone is gorgeous, etc).
* The style and scope of filmmaking will be horribly cliched after a while, when EVERYONE attempts to duplicate elements this movie pulled off flawlessly. See it done right the first time, and then wait for the eventual film that takes what Cloverfield did to the next level.
* Some said that it’s like Blair Witch meets Godzilla and they’d be missing the point. It’s funny at just the right times, the dialogue is believable, the scenarios plausible, and at no point are you ever rolling your eyes or thinking to yourself “yeah right, like THAT would ever happen” even while you’re watching a monster rampage through Lower Manhattan. Very well done movie.
* Beware that there will be no explanation of anything. This movie is solely from the hero and friends’ perspective. Nothing is explained, nothing is promised.
* See it in the theatre, if at all possible.

I'm so glad to hear this...I've been waiting patiently thinking exactly this: I'll wait and see what Erik and Scott on Cinematical think of it before I get really pumped.
And this is from someone currently wearing a Slusho! shirt.
Now I'm giving myself permission to go completely fanboy-ape-sh**

I previewed the movie last night and was a little disappointed. I feel like I've seen this movie before. Although, the idea behind the way it is filmed puts a whole new twist on things. However, I was near the front of the theater and I could hear a lot of people in the front saying they felt sick. I, too, felt incredibly motion sick upon leaving the theater. The camera is ten times more shaky than Bourne or Blair Witch ever thought about being. Think "man running down street holding a hand-held camera" the entire movie.

Erik, I wholeheartedly agree. I saw it last night here in Los Angeles. It's not perfect (I agree with ah4729's comments), but damn, is it really close to that.
I posted a review of it (No spoilers, I promise!) if anyone would like to check it out.

Did I watch the same movie as the rest of you? I had the highest hopes for this movie but it let me down. My biggest complaint has to be the camera work. I completely understand what they were trying to do with the shaky camera, but that still gives no excuse for bad camera work. It took me out of the movie, I was too worried about the guy next to me throwing up in my popcorn. How can you try to connect with characters when you cant focus because of the camera.
If the camera work was done better I would have enjoyed the movie. There are a lot of things I liked about movie, but I just couldn't and the more I think about it the more upset I get.
I am baffled by all these great reviews and the raves about how great this movie was. Clearly I was not sitting in the same theater as these people. I can honestly say I did not hear one good thing from the 300 or so people that saw my screening. But this is only one man's opinion, and who am I to complain about a free movie. But if I knew then what I know now about it I would have passed on the screening and sold the ticket on ebay.

I have to agree with Steph and Christopher, I was really let down. I haven't been so excited to see a movie in YEARS and walked out not really knowing what to think....... I don't want to say it was horrible because it wasn't....I guess I would say its just ok....the camera movement did give me a headache.....the monster looked great though (best part of the whole movie) and I thought it was scary......there were a couple intense moments but besides that it was just a monster movie......brought to you through the eyes of a video camera.......nothing more nothing less........it explains nothing........ Im really wondering how so many people on here are saying how much they liked the movie.......I really don't get it........then again maybe those people didn't read all the websites JJ Abrams set up as viral marketing that ended up having absolutly nothing to do with the movie............its like I can see him laughing all evil vilian like (lol) to himself now as so many people wasted their time........it is kind of funny in a way.........I guess the bottom line is I am really worried for LOST........if he thinks this is a really good movie.....comparable to Star Wars........how exactly is LOST going to end........will they all just wave goodbye a million things unexplained or maybe it will all be in the dreams of an autistic kid like on St. Elsewhere....either way I'm worried to even keep watching it to just be let down like I was with this..........I really wish I could have liked it as much as the rest of ya!! Maybe if I watch it again I'll see what the rest of you saw....... :D

I saw the film Tuesday night at a special screening, and if I hadn't had to get up and work today I would have been at the midnight showing today.
I loved this movie, it was dark, depressing and disturbing. (all my opinion) I personally think it lived up to the hype, but I was telling a friend who has not seen it yet yesterday it was one of those you where going to love or hate. I was pissed when I left the theater, but as time went on I realized that it was real, that this is how it would be if something happened. No glossy understory or soundtrack, just plain old fashion terror.
