Oh yes, that's exactly what you think it is. Moviefone snatched the first Star Trek photo, and though it's a tad dark, you can clearly see the new Enterprise ship coming together. Ever since it was announced that J.J. Abrams would be directing a brand new take on the Star Trek franchise, folks have been itching to see what he's come up with. Starring Zachary Quinto (as a young Spock), Chris Pine (as a young Kirk), Karl Urban (as Bones), Simon Pegg (as Scotty), John Cho (as Sulu), Anton Yelchin (as Checkov) and Zoe Saldana (as Uhuru), this latest Star Trek installment apparently follows the original crew during their early days at Starfleet Academy up through their first mission together. Eric Bana will be playing a villain named Nero, while Bruce Greenwood will also make an appearance as the original Captain, Christopher Pike. And for those longing for some old school Trek, you'll be happy to know that Leonard Nimoy will also be showing up as his old Spock self. Head to Moviefone to see a larger Star Trek photo, as well as a gallery of the cast. Star Trek is set to touch down on December 25.
Additionally, you can spot the first trailer for Star Trek this weekend in front of Cloverfield, and the film's official site has now gone live.

Still not thrilled about this. If the reports of the trailer are to be believed, can someone explain to me the logic (let alone its denial of canon star trek lore) of building a starship at the bottom of a gravity well?

Hmmm, a gravity well? I don't think I have ever heard that term used to describe a planet, but the picture leans towards the information I had read about it being built on earth. I certainly like the idea of a huge space ship being built in an orbiting shipyard then on the surface of the planet, but I hope they didn't try to get in a *wink wink nudge nudge* and have it built at Area 51 like other reports I have seen.

I am an old Trekkie fan and it doesn't seem "logical" to have Spock there and not have Kirk (William Shatner). They go together like love and marriage. Unfortunately we can't have Scotty as James Doohan is no longer with us. Same for the Original Bones. Still star trek carries on after all these years. It will grasp the new generation as well.

I am a big Trek fan, and would love to see all of the alive TOS crew in this movie, but wouldn't the really hard core Trekkies raise a fuss because in Star trek reality, Kirk died in Generations?

A planetoid and it's pull on gravity has been referred to a gravity well for years in numerous science fiction books I have read over the years. A few films too but I can't recall a direct example off hand.
Regardless of that, it's looking more and more that the ship is being built at Area 51 (sigh..Hollywood, can we stop using that please?)

Why would the Enterprise be built in area 51?
1. I seriously doubt this was their first attempt at a star ship, so there would be no need to build it in a "top secret" area. By this point in the story, star fleet and other space craft are already public knowledge.
2. With the technology of that time, IS there a truly a place they could build the ship without someone seeing it?, I mean we can practically do it now using our archaic satalites.
The Enterprise should be shown being built just all other star fleet ships have, in an orbiting space station.
One other thing.
Christopher Pike was the Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk. So the time line goes like this?:
1.The Enterprise is built.
2. Capt. Pike is given the command.
3. Capt. Pike somehow immedieatly loses command and it is given to a green (ensign???) officer like Kirk?
wouldn't Kirk need to escalate ranks before given the Captainship of the fleets newest most advanced flag ship?
Seems like they should have started the story after Kirk has spent some times going through the ranks, and has JUST been given the Enterprise after Pike loses it. (I'm not sure on the circumstance os him losing his command.)

John, your faults are sound. There does not appear to be a lick of logic (please excuse the pun) in how this Trek film is going forth (if we are to believe everything we have been told about it so far)
One more to add to the fray, how exactly are Kirk, Spock and all the rest supposed to be at the Academy together?

One more problem with it being built on earth. Even with 23rd century technology, "you canna' change the laws of physics"
The Saturn V rockets were about 105 m in length. The Enterprise was about 310 m in length (source http://www.merzo.net/) so how exactly are they going to get this thing to launch?
I know...I know, the fanboy in me should just be quiet about this but I find I can't.

I'm old school Trek too and I like the cast with two exceptions: Pine as Kirk and Greenwood as Pike. Both just don't seem to fit their respective characters. Nice try and I'll probably still see it but they could have done much better.

All of your concerns are valid ones, but what I want to know is.... why are they putting a bunch of kids on the enterprise??? I have seen all of the original Star Trek shows and movies and Kirk and the others definitely looked and were (for the most part) over the age of 30 (at least)... I mean... if you went through all of the schooling, training and promotions, you should be somewhere in your 30's or so by the time you hit captain, right? lol

This is sooooo wrong! For anyone who is a true trekkie from the original Star Trek, you will understand what I'm about to say! If they are going to do a new Star Trek movie -- do a new movie. No one can play Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Scottie, Bones, or any of the rest of the cast like the originals! It was classic and wonderful. DOn't rehash what was -- do something new! Doesn't anyone out there have an original idea anymore? I DO NOT even
want to see it!

Kind of amusing how so many people are complaining & making assumptions about, analyzing and reviewing a movie that has been seen by not one of them. Bunch of geniuses. I like the franchise and will decide for myself all of this when I actually SEE THE MOVIE.

Tom C, not all of us are condemning the whole thing. We are however basing our critiques on known facts about the film.

Tom, logic is logic, and based on the factors they have given us, I can safely ASSUME, this has zero chance of maintaining continuity of the story. That is a concern.
I WILL watch the movie same as you, but this seems like yet one more re-hashing of a story from someone not entirely familiar with Trek story and time lines.
The only way they can possibly work all of this out is if they write this story from the elder Spocks perspective and he is telling of how things happened. Then they could work in showing Kirk, Spock and crew at the academy, the Enterprise being built and still work in time for Kirk and crew to ascend the ranks.
Anything else, will be a discombobulated mess.

Two words... Kobayashi Maru. That could get young Kirk in the Captain's chair. We can see him cheat too. Though how Checkov could be more than a boy scout in this time frame eludes me. A young Kirk did briefly teach at the Academy though, perhaps around the time he met Carol Marcus... maybe that is what this is... Kirk teaching, Spock serving with Pike, and the others in training at the Academy at different stages (save McCoy and Scotty, of course).
While I would love to see William Shatner in this film along side Leonard Nimoy, the fact is Bill was 14 years younger when he filmed Kirk's death in Star Trek Generations. Without some Direct TV-style digital rejuvenation, it would be difficult for the older Shatner to play a pre-Nexus Kirk (though maybe that is an option), and it would require some interesting fiddling with the timeline to explain how a dead Kirk could have aged 14 years otherwise.
