Oh yes, that's exactly what you think it is. Moviefone snatched the first Star Trek photo, and though it's a tad dark, you can clearly see the new Enterprise ship coming together. Ever since it was announced that J.J. Abrams would be directing a brand new take on the Star Trek franchise, folks have been itching to see what he's come up with. Starring Zachary Quinto (as a young Spock), Chris Pine (as a young Kirk), Karl Urban (as Bones), Simon Pegg (as Scotty), John Cho (as Sulu), Anton Yelchin (as Checkov) and Zoe Saldana (as Uhuru), this latest Star Trek installment apparently follows the original crew during their early days at Starfleet Academy up through their first mission together. Eric Bana will be playing a villain named Nero, while Bruce Greenwood will also make an appearance as the original Captain, Christopher Pike. And for those longing for some old school Trek, you'll be happy to know that Leonard Nimoy will also be showing up as his old Spock self. Head to Moviefone to see a larger Star Trek photo, as well as a gallery of the cast. Star Trek is set to touch down on December 25.
Additionally, you can spot the first trailer for Star Trek this weekend in front of Cloverfield, and the film's official site has now gone live.

I was just getting sick of reading all these posts from know-it-all fans when I finally read one that was written with the greatest amount of common sense. Thank you BaronByng (post # 54), well said!

John, your ideas are good. Having just finished I AM SPOCK, by Leonard Nimoy, I find it interesting to pick up this thread about a new movie. He mentioned something like this was peddled for a previous ST movie, but Paramount had turned it down.
As he's been pretty picky about his involvement in ST productions (demanding quality and a REASON for Spock being in it--not just billing apppeal) I will trust that this might just turn out to be ok.
I have yet to delve deeper and see who's directing--and can only hope that the writer's strike won't negatively affect this, as most of the previous ST movies used re-writing as deemed necesary for improving what works and how. I for one, am looking forward to this.
As a former member of the Star Trek Association for Revival (STAR) when I was in high school over 30 years ago, I am tickled to tell my kids...it worked!

As far as movies go, it would be hard to do a worse job than the original cast. The TV show was ok for its time, in spite of Kirk. It will be nice to see a movie with the original characters without Shatner's ego weighing it down.

As a fan it was pretty bad that i only knew there was another movie being released when i saw the teaser trailer before Cloverfield!
I cant wait to see it even though I am always sceptical of how they are going to trash the franchise everytime they do someting 'new'. Personally for XII id rather carry on with the TNG films, and see life after troi and riker..and data? or a voyager film. I think a completely new era would never happen for a movie, its just too risky. We should just be thankfull that Jonathan Frakes isnt directing it so we dont end up with another Insurrection!
I'm not sure what to thik of the crew.. maybe completely unknown actors (that at least look a little like the crew!) would be better instead of people from films like 'harold and kumar' haha
But im glad leonard nimoy is coming back, shame about shatner- and i love the fact that simon pegg is playing Scotty!
I agree that the ship doesn't look like the original, more the refit.. however its possible the image could be from the end of the movie? an image of the Enterprise being refitted to leave an open end maybe?
I agree about people saying the crew are too young to be given a ship, look at Archer and how old he was.. but Kirk always made himself out to be some sort of prodigy child so its do-able, and everybody knows the story of the Kobayashi Maru, plus Pike didn't just command the ship for a few days and then bugger off, isn't that when the accident occured that crippled him, soon after he got the command? I guess starfleet were pretty desperate and decided to give the command to the little cheating maverick haha
Anyway, should be good to see, regardless of how good or faithful the film actually is- its always interesting to see a new spin on events we have all taken for granted but never actually seen!

Hey all...have looked over the preceding comments and checked out Orci on the whole question of constructing the Enterprise on earth...and had one quick thought.
Anti-gravity is an established tech, both in the series and movies. Mostly what we've seen are smaller devices, but there's no reason you couldn't construct a huge device that could create a zero-gravity corridor from a shipyard on Earth's surface to orbit (kinda like a reverse tractor beam). Don't know if this will be in the movie, but its one possibility.

Regardless of some improper casting, in MY own opinion, I will see this film. When I found out that Nimoy would be in it, the ONLY logical conclusion is that Spock is in his declining years & possibly near death, will mind-meld with someone close to him & all of his memories will be 'transferred' to this other person. His memories of his 'academy days' & his first meeting of the crew will be viewed by us, the movie watchers.
That is, of course, a wild guess.
Thanx,
Barton

Ive been a closet fan for years and enjoy any take on startrek. I was kind of hoping that we would do something in the same time frame of Voyager and TNG so characters could cross. Also, as the original used modern day issues to work into the storyline, I often fanticized about a new series called FI or Federation Inteligance which would have the most advanced ship including intershiop beaming, holagraphic bridge,a new speed called wrek which is faster then warp and of course cloaking. This ship would be used to do covert missions such as defending planets in the federation from Ramulans that have been infultrated by the Borg. Federation Intel would have its own hierarchy with visits from Adm.Janeway and Adm. Piccard. FI would also out rank Temperal investigations because of advanced technology given to FI from an advanced race. Technology the Federation itself doesnt have yet. The crew would have to pass training in the Federation, FI and the advanced unspecified race that supplies the technology. FI could go where no one COULD go before. Also, add to the mix the CON Federation, a group of planets that have broken from the federation in favor of a more expansion and who refuse to beleave the federation has spread to thin. That would be another reason why we would need the Advanced ship as the Con Federation will have the same technology as the Federation but new lines will be drawn in the sand. Add also to the mix how the sulaban in enterprise evolved into the borg. The FI admiral will have communication with the borg queen forming a truce between FI and the Federation but not between the Borg and the Con Federation. The infiltration by the Borg in the Ramulan Empire causes and alliance between The Romulan and Vulcan empires with a strained relationship with the federation. The FI however is only really concerned with the Talshar with its covert missions into unexplored Romulan space.
So guys ....what do you think. ???

YOu know all great comments - My thoughts is this is Star Trek, and I support it regardless. I was highly concerned that Trek may fade into history. My sincere thanks to the greats who made this happen. JC

I feel 32058728671076 times better about this now.
I'm still terrified, of course, that Berman's going to pull an "ENT" and screw up history irreparably once again... but at least I accept the cast.
You have no idea how terrified I was that they were going to have a bad Scotty. Thank you, Simon Pegg!
Oh, BTW... the new Uhura's rack isn't NEARLY big enough. ^_^

Where is William Shatner? Yes, yes, I know he died in "Generations", but just as they brought back Spock after he died, they certainly can bring back James T. Kirk after he died. I am really, really disappointed that he is not in the film. C'mon, bring him back. This is science fiction after all.....

Chris Pine is a cute/pretty man.
He is not James T. Kirk.
It appears that according to US film industry, heroes and heroines must be pretty people. And the bad guys still wear black hats (defective appearance in some way).

Still not thrilled about this. If the reports of the trailer are to be believed, can someone explain to me the logic (let alone its denial of canon star trek lore) of building a starship at the bottom of a gravity well?

Hmmm, a gravity well? I don't think I have ever heard that term used to describe a planet, but the picture leans towards the information I had read about it being built on earth. I certainly like the idea of a huge space ship being built in an orbiting shipyard then on the surface of the planet, but I hope they didn't try to get in a *wink wink nudge nudge* and have it built at Area 51 like other reports I have seen.

I am an old Trekkie fan and it doesn't seem "logical" to have Spock there and not have Kirk (William Shatner). They go together like love and marriage. Unfortunately we can't have Scotty as James Doohan is no longer with us. Same for the Original Bones. Still star trek carries on after all these years. It will grasp the new generation as well.

I am a big Trek fan, and would love to see all of the alive TOS crew in this movie, but wouldn't the really hard core Trekkies raise a fuss because in Star trek reality, Kirk died in Generations?
