Cinematical Remembers Heath Ledger
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Obits

Cinematical's staff would like to take a moment to share our thoughts on Heath Ledger, who passed away today after an apparent overdose.
Although Heath Ledger's best known film to date is Brokeback Mountain, my favorite of his films was Candy, in which he starred opposite fellow Australian Abbie Cornish. His performance in Candy, as an artist and heroin addict in a mutually destructive relationship with Cornish's nice middle-class girl, was so riveting and raw, and it's one of those fest films that I've thought about often since I saw it. Like most everyone who's here working Sundance, I was deeply shocked by the news of his tragic death today. He touched us through his films, and we are saddened by the loss of his life, and the films he would have made in the future. His family, especially his young daughter Matilda, will be in our thoughts and prayers.
-Kim Voynar
My original feeling about Heath Ledger -- after films like The Patriot, A Knight's Tale, and 10 Things I Hate About You -- was that he was yet another handsome and likable matinee idol ... but not much more than that. But over the last several years, I was proven wrong ... several times. My favorite performance of his was the lead role in the underrated Casanova -- and I'll be giving that film a second spin as soon as I get home from Sundance. He was a very fine actor who clearly took a lot of pride in his work, and I believe that the movie world has just lost a good soul. My heart goes out to his friends, his family, his fans, and also to the departed Heath Ledger; (If his death is ruled a suicide) I'm deeply sorry that he was so unhappy. (Regardless of the reason for the actor's death, it's a stunning tragedy.)
-Scott Weinberg
Like most young actors, Heath Ledger starred in his share of mediocre movies, yet he always appeared to take his work seriously, giving solid, professional performances regardless of the project. He knew he had to pay his dues before he got the prestige projects -- and when prestige finally arrived in the form of Brokeback Mountain, he was prepared for it. I had occasion to re-watch the last 20 minutes of that film just last week, and I was struck again by how much he does with so little. There are no tantrums or obvious "Oscar-bait" scenes. The character is reserved and unemotional; somehow, Ledger managed to convey so much about him anyway. He was a talented actor, and his death is a blow to the film community.
-Eric D. Snider
Many people finally came to respect Heath Ledger after his Oscar-nominated performance in Brokeback Mountain. But I honestly became a fan after 10 Things I Hate About You, a Shakespeare-inspired teen comedy that deserves a lot more credit than it receives. Ledger was a great actor, because he could do just about any kind of movie well. After 10 Things, he could have simply been a heartthrob. After The Patriot, a movie I guiltily admit I enjoy a lot, he could have easily gone further into action territory. And in The Brothers Grimm, he showed
us that he had a decent knack for comedy, too. Even when everybody in the blogosphere was shocked to hear he'd be playing The Joker in The Dark Knight, he proved that he had the goods to pull it off. Now his performance in the Batman sequel is one of the most eagerly anticipated of the year. After watching the recently released trailer, I even felt like he could be nominated for a second Oscar for the role. It could still happen, I guess, but it won't be as exciting without Ledger himself to accept the honor.
-Christopher Campbell
When Monika sent me an Instant Message with the news, it hit me like a claw hammer to the forehead. I knew she wouldn't joke about something like that, but, on a day of supreme cinematic reflective self-love, as the indie world obsesses over a snowy resort town in Utah, as Hollywood celebrates nominees for an award that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, it's very sobering. Heath Ledger wasn't my favorite actor, but he was definitely one to watch, and the thought that his light has been extinguished at such a young age, leaving behind a young daughter ... it's so sad it makes me want to cry, and I never cry about celebrities.

Heath wasn´t one of my favourite actors. But I loved his movies, respectad him, and tought that he had a bright future. I saw a post at the Imdb that said "Heath Ledger´s death". Don´t know why I didn´t take a better look. Around 5 hours later I was looking at some news in the net. I couldn´t believe it. I still can´t.
Heath´s death means a terrible lose to the film industry and too us. People who loved him in his roles.

I received a message from one of my good friends Bryan saying that Heath Ledger had passed away. I thought he was joking but when I found out for myself, I really wish he was joking.
Heath was so young and so talented, it is a really sad day when someone like Heath is taken away from not only the film indutry but from the world. You will be missed by everybody Heath but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, Michelle and Matilda to which he loved with all of his heart.

Shocking. I can wrap my brain around Suzanne Pleshette passing. She had a long, full life and career. Unfortunately she became ill and didn't recover. Sam for the guy who played Sam the Butcher on The Brady Bunch.
It's a shame that Heath Ledger had a whole life and career ahead of him. What a sad, tragic shame. I feel for his parents in Australia, and his little girl.

I was lucky enough to get the trailer editing assignment for NED KELLY a few years back. Though I was not a fan of THE PATRIOT and some of his other early work, I had a feeling that there was greatness hiding in this young man. Though not a great film, NED KELLY revealed just how naturally gifted this young man was. There were moments, when I thought I was watching Peter O'Toole in THE LION IN WINTER. He was powerful, truthful and riveting. I am deeply shocked and saddened by his passing, an only hope that his family and young daughter can see themselves through this dark time. My condolensces to all. - Scott

He's been my favorite actor for years and years now. I got so many phone calls this morning about this issue it makes me so sad. Everyone knows about my love for him and all my friends and family called me right away cause they knew I would be devastated, and I AM. I have to say my favorite Heath's performance was in Lords of Dogtown. He showed his versatitly as an actor and that he could play any part, his future was so brilliant, as brilliant as the orion knight that shines mighty in the sky, I wil for ever hink about him everytime I lift my head up in the sky and see Orion'

As a film scholar and screenwriter I think I can say that Heath Ledger was an actor with so much promise, shown already in Brokeback Mountain, and many other films. He even raised the thin story of The Order to a higher level, showing the promise of much more to come. Rest now in peace, you shall not be forgotten.

I found out this morning about this tragedy and I couldn't believe my friend's words so as soon as I got home I looked it up and it was there...Heath Ledger has passed away. Still I'm in shock and I've been crying my heart out whole day even though I didn't know him personally but I admire him and think he was such a talent and such an amazing person... This is the loss film industry is gonna feel.
He was a great man and he will always be remembered that way.
I shall pray for his soul and for his family and especially for his daughter because I know how it's like to lose a father at the age of 2. Be strong Matilda.
Rest in peace, Heath, and please every now and then smile to us from above so we can see that beautiful smile shining again.
Your fan forever and after,
Katia

The first time I saw him in 10 things I hate about you, I immediately fell in love with his charm and his wide laugh.
The truth is that I love everything Heath has done. He was my first platonic love.
I hope that heaven doors are now wide open to him. All I want to express are my most sincerely condolences to Heath's family and friends and to that wonderful country where Heath was born: Australia.
And wherever you are now, Heath, I'm pretty sure that you will rest in many people's hearts as a great actor, best friend, good son and an excellent father.
I LOVE U 4EVER AND EVER AND...EVER

I just wish Hollywood and "Cinematical" made this much fuss over a week ago when Brado Renfro Passed Away!
Between Brad and Heath we lost two (2) really good actors on there way up!
Brad Renafro had the distinction of being discovered at the age of 11 (The Client) & just really growing as an adult and as an actor making really good films. Just like Heath, Brad had just completed filming on the yet unreleased movie "The Informers"!
It will be really interesting to see both Brad's last film "The Informers", & Heath's last film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"!
I know the "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" was still in production at the time of Heath's death, so only time will tell if he was done finishing his scenes, or if there was more to go?

There are not enough words to express my sadness, and sorrow over the untimely death of Heath Ledger. He was so young, and had so much left to give. He was a gorgeous, handsome, and uniquely talented actor who will always be remembered for his contribution to film history, his commitment to his family, and his relationships with his co-stars. It really wasn't his time to go, and it sickened me to hear about this tragedy, and I was about to cry, but I had to be strong for Heath. He will be truely missed, but never forgotten.

All of the comments that has been made about this brilliant actor are so true.....My sister called me up the other night and said "have you watched the news? Guess who died?..." I have been seriously affected by this man's death. Then just today I found out that he recently became a father. And seeing as how I have recently became a father of a little girl myself, it really aguishes me that 1) he doesn't fully get to participate in that fantastic priviledge of being a father, and 2) his little girl will now only get to know her father through family memories and his movies, which I don't believe will fully do justice to the excellent person Heath was. It just isn't fair. I fully believe as well that his death was not suicidal, but purely incidental. There is very few actors/actresses out there that I believed they are taking acting seriously enough to be called a profession rather than a display of God-given talent then back to partying and trouble. You never heard of repeated encounters with the law with Heath. He took pride in his cinematic work, and it showed. I will forever miss future acting and smash box office hits from Heath Ledger. May God be with his family, and especially his daughter. Rest In Peace Heath, I'll continue to pray for daughter.

Heath this is for you!
You walked off into the darkness
You never did look back,
You didn't know where you were going
Now you're off the beaten track.
You never said goodbye to us
No warnings you were to go,
Now we all just sit and listen
So many hearts they're broken so.
Your family they all mourn for you
You can see the pain it's in their eyes,
Your fans we all just sit and stare
We are all just so surprised.
Maybe it was an accident
Maybe you didn't mean to take them all,
But I guess it is too late now
No one expected you to fall.
I will no longer watch you
I cannot take a look,
You were in my favourite movie
You were in my favourite book.
Heath Ledger we did lose today
And no one will ever forget
"10 Things I Hate About You"
My modern day Romeo & Juliet!

I'm completely shocked by his death!! I am very sympathetic toward his family and friends. And wish my kindest condolences. I love his role as william in "A knight's Tale" best, and I have seen the movie on DVD again and again: http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=79851&ru=279 , Such a brave knight! Really enjoy every minute! I think he will always be remembered as an actor who shone in every role he ever portrayed, and chose some of the most difficult and beautiful roles for his career. Australia will miss him! And The world will miss him!!!
