Well, it's official. After referring to the latest Bond movie as Bond 22 for what seemed like forever, BBC News reports that producers of the 22nd installment of the Bond franchise say the official title will be...wait for it...Quantum of Solace. To be honest, my first reaction was -- huh? Then, however, I found out that the title was taken from a collection of short stories published by Bond creator Ian Fleming back in 1960, so I guess it has some retro charm in spite of the fact that it sounds kind of awkward; don't you think? (Once again, Daniel Craig might have been messing with us all, just a little, with hints that "007" was the official title.)
The announcement came during a press conference at the new Pinewood Studios, where the film has begun shooting. Journalists were shown some clips of Bond swinging out of an explosion of an art gallery in Italy, as well as a meeting between Bond (Daniel Craig) and M (Judi Dench) in a snowy locale.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that they finally announced their new Bond Girl, Olga Kurylenko. So sure, the production has taken it's time assembling the cast around Daniel Craig; but now that it is all said and done, they have managed to put together a pretty interesting ensemble. There are some familiar faces from Casino Royale returning -- Giancarlo Giannini as Mathis and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. Plus, there are also some first-timers to the Bond franchise including critically acclaimed French actor Mathieu Amalric as our bad guy and Gemma Arterton as MI6 Agent Fields. We've gotten a couple of images from the film, but so far, most of the details about the story are still being kept under lock and key. So, if you can't wait for November 7th when Quantum of Solace hits theaters, stay tuned for any updates that come our way.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (DANIEL CRAIG) in CASINO ROYALE.
Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (JUDI DENCH) interrogate Mr White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.
Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.
On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.
In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organisation.

Quantum of Solace! Actually I can see that now. The short story from For Your Eyes Only, is about Bond at a party being told this story about a man who married a stewardess. The quantum of solace or The Law of the Quantum of Solace the death of the common humanity in one of the partners of a relationship. Now one could argue, Vesper's betrayal was the death of the humanity of that relationship or you could say because of her betrayal Bond has lost his humanity? Could work! Love it!

Or were you expecting the no-brainer Michael Bay crap titles we got from the Brosnan era? ("Tomorrow Never Dies" - puke - "Die Another Day" - barf.)

What's wrong with The Living Daylights as a title Donna? That combination of words already has mental real estate, unlike Quantum of Solace... right? Not sure what I think of QoS yet by the way; it's been growing on me since I heard it.
Agree about Brosnan's though.

I really don't care what the title as long as they give us another exciting movie. They can name it poop & crap as long as it's step up from Casino Royale.

I find it an interesting title, a shot across the bow, reflective of the mental state we are to anticipate, a lot more indirect than most, but wonder that if they felt License Revoked was too high brow for American audiences, this one is definitely beyond our ken. With all the obvious ones used up, I'm glad they returned to the source for inspiration. And, for Donna's edificaiton, the phrase Benjamin referred to is to "scare the living daylights out of someone."
But in the end a title is only as good as the movie.
