The New York Post's Joe Neumaier claims that Jack Nicholson told London reporters that he "warned" Heath Ledger: but about what, exactly? Burning the candle at both ends? Playing a gay cowboy in a homophobic country? "Well, I warned him," is the full and exact quote. Still, under the caption of Nicholson in full purple regalia in the Post, it claims Nicholson "warned Ledger about the part [of The Joker]." Neumaier notes other reports that Ledger had slept two hours a night during the filming of The Dark Knight, and that Ledger had told the press "prescription drugs didn't help." This might just be a ghoulish attempt to capitalize on Ledger's death by linking him to a celebrated screen and comic book villain, so I thought I'd check Burton on Burton (edited by Mark Salisbury) to see if Tim Burton recalled Nicholson going through similar angst when making the 1989 Batman, giving him grounds for worrying about the stress on another actor playing the role. Not quite. On Nicholson, Burton commented, "He was very cool...he was very calming and helpful and would just say, `Get what you need, get what you want, and just keep going.'" (Thanks to Moviefone for this tipoff.)

Out of context - I saw the TV spot showing it, and it seemed like Jack said it closer to "I warned 'em" - Meaning, which he explains in his clarification, that he had trouble with different types of drugs earlier in his career, and that he now warns all people to stay away from them.
Obviously this is being used for many other intents and purposes, but overall it was a blanket statement.

Its quite obvious what had transpired. Heath was seeking advice from Nicholson about playing the Joker. Upon having a conversation(telephone probably), Nicholson had a few unsolicited advices for the younger Heath. Going by rumors around Hollywood, Nicholson told the younger Heath to stay off the drugs. Heath's drug problems was no secret in Hollywood.

yes, perhaps nicholson wasn't tormented but his portrayal of the joker was astronomicall different, just look at the picture for this post and then look at footage of Batman 1. Not downplaying nicholson's job, but ledger was immersed in the Joker.

I saw in a news report that Nicholson later clarified that he warned Heath Ledger about using sleeping pills, that he believes they are dangerous.

That's right Phae. Do some more research before you post something. Nicholson clearly said he warned Ledger about Ambien, because Nicholson almost drove off a cliff once after taking it. He called into a station last night and said that. He said Ambien was very dangerous.
I'm guessing (Not even gonna bother to try) that you still haven't fixed the flippin' reply button either. What DO you guys do all day?

I saw Nicholson in an interview after that comment was made and he said that he never met Ledger, but has worned people about the effect of those sleeping pills. I think the comment "Well, I warn'd him" was just Jack being Jack.

I heard it on Howard Stern today, Nicholson clearly states I warned ´em. He immediately claimed that at one time he nearly went off a road driving thanks to sleeping pills (as MCW states here). It is so silly to think this is linked to The Joker, we are all smarter than that. At least on my part, I would have gone deep into drugs if I had to kiss Jake G for as many times as Ang Lee reported. Leave Jack alone, typical Hollywood gossip...

The only problem with this statement is that it seems a little cold up front. Instead of sounding saddened by the news that Ledger was dead, Nicholson just kind of shruggedly said "I warned 'em". Whether he did or not, the point is Heath Ledger is dead. A great man has died and people should have respect for that. Especially Jack Nicholson. Saying "I warned 'em" so flippantly seems so inconsiderate. It's like: "He's dead? Oh, well. His problem cause he was warned".

As much money as these kinds of movies make, it is hard to imagine the greed which forces the actors to work such long and hard and psychologically demanding schedules that they don't get adequate rest. If a lead actor is too tired to work one day, they should work around him, or delay shooting for a day or two. Wouldn't they then get a better overall performance?

NY Post should be ashamed. This isn't the first time I've heard this and I thought it was someone just making a joke on Nichloson thinking he was the best Joke portrayal and he was acting like "Don't steal my thunder." Now I hear he actually warned him about sleeping pills? Even if that is true, for NY Post acting like there is a curse on the Joker role, is shameful and ridiculous.

Jack was saying "I warned em" because he now hopes that others will at last and too late, listen to him about the fact that sleeping pills are very dangerous. It wasn't ''flip", it was a lament born of his own experience with them.

yeah, lets send hundreds of people home, push back schedules, tell other productions that the sound stage and other fascilites and technicians won't be available because 1 person needed to take a nap. good plan.

I don't think disagreeing over homosexual behavior= "unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals..."

Can't there be debate without name calling? America is one of the most liberal (in terms of freedoms) countries in the world. Don't knock it. Please?

Its easy to get off subject when so much emotion is involved. and tension is so high.
we still morn the loss of life, and the anticipation for the future will have been robbed of. I ledger's own words, playing a psycho sociopath combined with following the name Jack has in the industry in sort of the same role.
That is heavy. Then combined filming with terry gilliam and dealing with seperation. From self to stay in character. gilliam puls as much out of the human soul as joel and ethan coen. ANY role is Demanding beyond all else in film.
I think we should let this man rest in peace. And enjoy the next 2 films. Something we dont want to feel, but cant pass em up. the show must go on.
