Video of the Day: 'Tarantino's Mind'
Filed under: Shorts, Fandom, Quentin Tarantino, Home Entertainment, Trailers and Clips
If you haven't already noticed, today is Quentin Tarantino Day on Cinematical! This is the third time we've written about him -- first because of a scuffle in Park City, then a review of Hell Ride -- and now I bring you this pretty cool short film from Brazil called Tarantino's Mind. It's trippy, and there's tons of little nuggets of info in it, but basically the entire film follows two guys having a Tarantino-inspired conversation in a diner. It runs just over 10 minutes, and you'll need to put your reading glasses on, but it's damn good if I should say so myself.
One of the guys -- a Tarantino fanatic -- has just finished a thesis on the director, and he goes through each of his films pointing out similarities from other films. It's his belief that Tarantino created only one screenplay that "the geek divided into several parts." My favorite moment comes when he presents his theory on the briefcase from Pulp Fiction. Makes a lot of sense, and I can't believe I hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, take a break from whatever you're doing, clock out for ten minutes and check out this short. However, while it's in a foreign language, be aware that foul language is used and those words are displayed on the bottom of the screen. Enjoy!

kinda pointless if you ask me.
What it actually does is trivialize all those little things that you find while watching multiple tarantino movies, taking the fun out of them, because that's just what they are...little stupid details that make you go "hey, it's those guys from his other movie!"...and the briefcase thing makes no sense (I toyed with that theory once though): At the end of RD, when Mr. Pink runs out, you can hear police yelling at him to freeze (It's a pretty safe bet the cops were waiting outside).
The stuff he gets right, QT fans have noticed for years...and in the other stuff he's waaaay off (Jules as the organ player? come on...)

Yes, most film geeks knew most of the connections already, so there's really no code to break. Two things bother me about this film, though:
1. There are THREE scripts Tarantino didn't direct: "True Romance," "NBK" AND "From Dusk 'Til Dawn." The subject claims only two.
2. Another TB pointed this out: Mr. Pink was captured at the end of "Reservoir Dogs." Those are the cops yelling at him. Don't believe me? Watch it on closed captioned if you can't hear. So, Erik, it didn't come to you that the briefcase in "Pulp Fiction" was the case of diamonds because they're not.

Reservoir Dogs was before True Romance and Natural Born Killer. So the raising the money for RD bit is false.
The conversation doesn't really make sense. So Tarantino likes swords, B-movies, Uma Thurman and a foot fetish, doesn't mean its all the one film. He just likes putting things he likes into his films. Anyways Tarantino says he thought up Kill Bill while on set in Pulp Fiction, similarities were bound to occur. The briefcase gag QT got from Kiss Me Deadly (1955).
This was fun for people who are really interested in QT's film. 10 mins of one guys talking is difficult to sit through.

This was a fun film, jsut the banter back and forth. Sure fans are familar with a lot of the points or you think some aren't close, but it shows the fandom and intensity people can have.
