Indiana Jones' Crystal Skull Revealed!
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
In every Indiana Jones film there's a McGuffin -- a film term related to an object that's usually the central focus of a story, like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction or the Ark in Raiders of the Lost Ark. And in each Indiana Jones film, Indy is always in search of an object, be it the Ark, the Holy Grail or the Sankara Stone. In the latest Indiana Jones adventure, titled Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it is believed Jones goes in search of the elusive Crystal Skull. While we don't exactly know what it is or why he's searching for it, we may now know what it looks like.
Apparently, Action Figure Insider has posted a promotional flyer from a Japanese company that's producing a bunch of Indiana Jones-related trinkets. Among said trinkets -- and featured prominently -- is what looks like the Crystal Skull. We'll save an image of the actual flyer for after the jump (so as to not spoil the film for those who'd rather not see or know anything), but judging from the photo, let's just say Indy might be searching for something other-worldly. Check out the image after the jump; Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hits theaters on May 22.
UPDATE: We've been asked to take the photos down, so they're no longer here. Sorry about that folks.

Sorry but your use of the term "MacGuffin" is inaccurate. The term, which was created by Alfred Hitchcock, is not used in relation to something which is the central focus of a story but rather is an uknown "something" that drives or motivates the characters and the story. We never learn what the MacGuffin actually is because it is really of no importance. The Crystal Skull is not a MacGuffin.

Actually Richard, Hitchcock's term for the MacGuffin was not the first of the term, he was describing and explaining it to the audience and typically it can not be of no real importance. So a MacGuffin is an object which motivates the story forward but it's not important what the object specifically is. As long as it motivates the story forward.

You are correct about the MacGuffin in the context of Hitchcock. Unfortunately Lucas himself calls the "central item" in the Indy movies a MacGuffin. The recent write up in Vanity Fair (at least I think it was VF) was all about how they had to have the perfect MacGuffin before the 3 of them (Lucas, Spielberg and Ford) would consider doing #4. So don't be so hard on Erik...

it's like this- the briefcase and what's inside of it in pulp fiction is a macguffin...and it's something the audience sees and knows about. it drives the story but is not of importance otherwise. so erik is totally right.

That skull freaks me out more than watching someone's heart get pulled out of their chest and still be alive.
