Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Happening'
Filed under: Drama, Mystery & Suspense, Fandom, Trailers and Clips
The first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening is now online (watch it above), and, well, what the hell is happening in this one? From the looks of it, some sort of disease hits the city in which everyone begins killing themselves. It's the strangest thing, but that's what I took away from the trailer. So far, all we've been told about the movie was that a national crisis hits and one family must go on the run. So what's this disease, and why -- out of the blue -- does it appear as if people are stabbing themselves in the neck and jumping off buildings? Odd as all hell, but that's M. Night for ya -- and, while the film definitely looks like a step up from his previous two films, will The Happening fall curse to that late-inning surprise twist that not only made M. Night, but also helped mangle the guy's career?
The Happening stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo and Spencer Breslin. Word has it this trailer will be attached to Jumper, when it hits theaters later this month. What will happen when M. Night arrives in theaters with another film on June 13? I guess we'll see ...

I don't know...a lot of people are ragging on this one on AICN...but I think it looks like it could be really good.
But man...is it just me, or is there no way to get away from heavy 9-11 imagery...maybe it's just me...seems to make it more powerful...

I must admit, it's a very interesting idea for a film/disease. Unfortunately whenever I hear anything that M Night is tied to I can't help but roll my eyes now. Lady In The Water was one of the most painful movies I've ever had to sit through.

I, personally, cannot wait for this movie. Night is so original, and his direction is always impeccable.
It's gunna rock!

People are going to rag on anything M. Night does, thinking he is a one-trick wonder. I look forward to this movie. The trailer looks very cool to me :)

Just you, yep. Family Guy made fun of this. You can just say "9/11" and people will start clapping uncontrollably. This trailer has absolutely nothing to do with 9/11. I saw no planes, Towelheads or cloud of dust. It's just a movie.

hmmm...people killing themselves at random for no apparent reason.
must be an apocolyptic vision of the near future in which Bush & his puppets bend the Constitution enough to get himself elected to a third term...

over at mnightfans.com, they're saying this is the international trailer, and not the one that will be attached to 'Jumper' next week. I guess we'll know soon enough.

Or it could be the exact same plot as "Cellular".

Oddly enough, none of the terrorists on 9/11 wore towels on their heads. Maybe THAT's how we missed them!
Anyways, interesting movie, but please stay away from "the twist," M Night.

MCW:
People there that day watched as people jumped from the World Trade Center. People stood in the lobby of the towers as bodies fell and hit the ceilings above them.
The scene of the workers jumping from the building, while haunting in and of itself, resembles very much that feeling of the worker looking up and seeing the bodies falling.
That's all I was commenting on.
It's a very powerful image and I think, from what it looks like, is that M. Night captured it fantastically and it's all the more powerful for it.
Towel Heads?
Nice.

I am pretty sure the whole plot of the movie was spilled online and I am pretty sure I read about it on this site. Basically the whole movie is about people killing themselves for no reason and you can't escape. people who dont kill themselves eventually do and by the end everyone dies.

To me the trailer shows promise. If the premise doesn't run out of steam it could work.

Haven't we always known that this movie is about a disease that makes people off themselves?

People seem to like the term Towelheads. I'll be sure to use it more often :) Didn't know it was popular. I call it like I see it. Think I first heard it on South Park or something.

Surprisingly, as I am no fan of Shyamalan, if this didn't star Marky Mark I'd actually be excited to see this. I can just imagine the lame "twist" already though.
