Holy Hannah Montana Controversy!
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Newsstand
No, Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) did not get caught sending nude photos to a boy (one would think the girls from Disney would know better by now). But Cyrus, who's currently the biggest thing to hit the tween market since Cabbage Patch Kids, is right smack in the middle of a new controversy -- one that's apparently upset the folks over at ConsumerReports.org. During a scene in the recently-released 3-D movie Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concer Tour, apparently Miley and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, are shown riding in the back seat of a Range Rover on their way to a concert rehearsal. Ah, but look a little closer and you'll notice ... neither of them are wearing a seat belt!!!
As CR notes, "Miley, her father, and Disney had a perfect opportunity to help influence teens and counteract -- rather than encourage -- this trend." Statistics show that in 55 percent of passenger vehicle fatalities in 2006, the occupants were not wearing seat belts. And in the 13-to-15-year-old age group, that number rises to 65 percent. I'll admit to not wearing my seat belt in the back seat on occasion, and even Miley herself has stressed through her music that "Nobody's Perfect!" -- but I agree the teenager should've set a good example by strapping in while she was on the road. What do you think? Is this a big deal? And seeing as this girl is watched by thousands upon thousands of young kids, should she be a little more careful in the future?

Do you know what kills front seat passengers most often when they're in collisions and they have rear seat passengers? The rear seat passengers.

Why would someone not wear a seatbelt ever? Talk about begging to become a human cannonball.

Let's face it, if you're stupid enough to ride in a car without wearing a seat belt, you and death deserve each other.

Maybe you guys would be happier if she pulled a Jamie Lynn Spears and got knocked up at her young age? At least her damn pants are buckled up.
Like no one here ever rode with a seatbelt off, sheesh.

Do they really think teenagers what this stuff?
Most of the HM fans I know are under 10 years old.
Teenagers are more interested in the new Simple Plan album.

Pepto,
At the screening I went to with my kids, I'd say about 70% of the audience was teen girls between 13-15, so yeah. What was funny was that a lot of them kept saying they were "only there to see the Jonas Brothers," but they were singing along and dancing to Hannah/Miley too. They all wish they were Miley Cyrus, up on stage in those cool outfits, singing to a huge crowd and hanging out with the Jonas boys.

omg are you serious. who cares, besides no one is watching to see if they have a seatbelt on. most the kids in the theater are too excited at watching their favorite star rather then worrying about little details in the movie. gosh this is the most stupid "controversy" I've ever heard of.

This is so dumb. So many kids look up to Miley and she acts like an almost perfect role model for all girls. My younger sisters love her and I love the way she always sets a great example by staying clear of drugs and partying and also making her voice heard that all girls are beautiful. Then she makes ONE tiny mistake like not wearing her seatbelt in a clip that could be FAKE and only make for her movie's sake and people criticize her. I'm sorry but choosing between a crazy, mental, bipolar, pysiciatric freak like Brittney Spears or perhaps a young girl who has a good head on her shoulders like Miley, I choose Miley. All you other people know that you could never live up to what this YOUNG 15 year old has done for young girls in our society. So, basically what I am saying is just skip this story and move on to the next headline.

This story reminds me a lot of the Ozzy Osbourne flap, you know where he was supposedly responsible for a teens suicide because of his suggestive lyrics. For that matter you can equate it to the ongoing steroid witch hunt in baseball, sort of.
Just as with Ozzy, aren’t there a few individuals with far more culpability in the matter: writers, directors, producers, and the theaters? I mean really, don’t they have the final say as to what makes it to the public.
The comparison stands to reason that if you think it’s a crime that sports figures make huge bank and are doping, take a look at the managers, owners, and huge corporate sponsors who trust me “know exactly what the hell is going on”. They are making far more cash off you (well maybe not the managers). Don’t they have some obligation to maintain the “integrity of the game”?
Its all entertainment, sports or otherwise. Perhaps the real issue is that parents need to explain what a real role model is. It isn’t Miley/Hanna, Roger or Berry.
Quit picking on her, she will have enough problems in a couple of years when they (managers, producers, handlers, agents, record labels, etc.) decide its time to sex up the act. Trust me its coming!!!!

Miley. Please wear your seatbelt. You have so many young girls that look up to you and would be deeply hurt should something happen to you because you didn't wear your seatbelt. My grandaughter adores you! Yes, she noticed! However, if that's the worst thing you do, I think we can all forgive you!! Please stay as wonderful an entertainer as you are now.

I saw the movie with my daughters this weekend and I can assure that neither of them even noticed!
In addition to it being only onscreen for about 20 seconds, they were in the back of a chauffeured car. How many of you can actually say that you put on a seatbelt when you are in a limo?
It's not like she was driving on the highway with a baby in her lap!
I left that movie with more respect for her as a performer and a tween-idol than I had when I bought my ticket. I just hope she can live up to the job.

Talk about placing blame on others . . . It's the parents' responsibility to insure that their children wear their seatbelts inside their car. The car is their property and adults/parents must enforce the rules that children must wear their seatbelts. Parents should instill in their children, the instant that they can ride in a car without a car seat, that they always have to wear a seatbelt when they ride in a car. If they enforce this rule enough times it will become second nature to their children. If the child doesn't put on their seatbelt it's the responsibility of the adult/parent to ensure that they wear their seatbelts.
Instead of trying to blame a movie for their kids not wearing their seatbelt, they can use this as an example and ask what behavior did Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) do in the movie that isn't acceptable, dangerous and wrong. If parents allow their children to do what's shown in movies and don't point out that what happens in movies, TV shows, cartoons, video games is fantasy and not acceptable, then the ones that are to blame are the parents NOT the entertainment industry or the children. Some parents need to take responsibility for what happens in their car, what they're teaching their children and for teaching children appropriate behavior and manners. It's not the job of others.
