Adrienne Shelly's Murderer Gets 25 Years
The story of filmmaker and actress Adrienne Shelly's murder is coming to a close, as the murderer has copped a manslaughter plea and escaped justice with a paltry 25 year sentence. Diego Pillco told prosecutors that Shelly, who was known for her Hal Hartley movies around the early 90s and who most recently directed the Sundance hit, Waitress, walked in on him while he was rummaging through her purse for money. She threatened to call the cops and so he strangled her to death and then staged a suicide. When police broke him down, he told them that the reason he went to such an extreme and killed Shelly -- the mother of a two year-old -- was because "I was having a bad day." And for this, he gets 25 years? Considering he's barely out of his teens, expect to see him back on the streets before he's middle-aged, probably. No matter what position you take on the death penalty, you have to agree that it's some kind of world where this guy isn't slated to walk the green mile.
Some small measure of good comes out of this tragedy, with the establishment by Shelly's widower of the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, which is dedicated to helping young female filmmakers and actresses pursue their careers through scholarships and grants. From the site: "In carrying out our mission, we've partnered with the industry's finest academic and filmmaking institutions to assist women in this journey with film school scholarships, production grants, finishing funds, and other invaluable resources." Details on how to apply and the rules and regulations are available on the site.

A humanistic one; we don't murder people in revenge or in blood lust in a human society. That's as barbaric as the original murder.

Fuck that...take a life, lose your life. You don't deserve to live off of my earnings.
But either way, he's an illegal immigrant. He'll do whatever time he's sentenced to, then deported immediatly once his sentence his up.

Totally agree. THE PUNISHMENT SHOULD FIT THE CRIME. You run over someone in your car and keep going, you deserve to be run over by a car repeatedly. Why should people get away with doing no good when some people struggle to be as kind and rule-abiding as possible?
25 years is NOT ENOUGH. He deserved the death sentence, because once he gets back on the streets, do you REALLY think he is going to be a law-abiding citizen for the remainder of his life? What, he's just going to become a changed man?
Screw him. Hope he gets shanked tomorrow. Don't agree with me? Then what's wrong with your morals?

Wow, you think 25 years isn't enough? If this happened here in Canada he'd be out on good behavior by now, with an apology letter from the government for making him sit in jail while the trial was taking place. Oh, and then he'd claim refugee status and start selling drugs on our streets.

Such a sad tragedy! 25 years is not enough time for this calculating murder, but the sentence seems to follow the guidelines. Sigh. Still I wonder why didn’t Pillco just run away when discovered. The majority of American criminals would have done this without harming anyone. It seems that the choice of murder is attributable to the Latin American mind-set resulting from the low value placed on all human life. This is why illegal immigration needs to be stopped. Those persons are essentially uneducated and in the US for tax-free money and free social services without embracing American ideals and standards – and in this case having a low threshold for committing murder. Controlled immigration would greatly help to assure/instill the latter ideals. The border wall won’t help much, but cutting off the wages will stop this problem. What’s keeping employers from checking their employees with SS who should report illegals to Homeland security for deportation? Still stalled by the ACLU? Thinking of all these factors makes Ms. Shelly's death all the more poignant. I pledge to see Ms. Shelly's last film and write congress about alien control yet another time.

Wow Thomas, great job of turning this terrible tragedy into a debate about illegal immigration and including all of your racist rants.
Job well done! You sure are a great patriotic American.

It's not revenge or blood lust. It's called justice. Well, it was called justice, until you "enlightened" types, with no sense of morality at all, redefined justice to mean just sitting around bored until you get out of jail halfway through your light sentence.

Thomas, this has got to be one of the most asinine, misinformed comments I've ever read. "The majority of American criminals would have done this without harming anyone?" Cite me a statistic from a valid source that proves that statement.
The rest of your comment is filled with borderline racist and isolationist bullshit --"It seems that the choice of murder is attributable to the Latin American mind-set resulting from the low value placed on all human life." -- Seriously???
Why don't employers report illegals? Because so many of them rely on being able to exploit illegals for cheap labor, to provide the goods and services that people like yourself depend on without having a clue (or giving a shit) about the working conditions and exploitation that's keeping cheap meat in your refrigerator, fresh produce on the shelves or your grocer, food on your table when you go out to eat, and the nice landscaping in your town and neighborhood.
Oh, and btw, unless you're a full-blood Native American, you're the result of illegal immigration yourself. Difference is, the Natives didn't have Homeland Security and INS to kick our ancestors out. People like yourself who think building a wall and mass-exporting of immigrants is the way to go are a part of the problem, not the solution. And they're human beings, Thomas. "Aliens" are those creatures from science fiction movies.
Shelly's murder was a terrible tragedy, but to try to use it as a springboard for this kind of separatist rhetoric is reprehensible.

We call this lazy law enforcement. Why bother working hard and just offer a walk for the detectives to have it easier.
