David Yates Will Direct 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,' Says Lois Lowry
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Deals, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
It's funny. I consider Lois Lowry to be one of those instrumental writers for young girls, but I only read Anastasia Krupnik (and maybe one more). Regardless, one of her other big series was The Giver trilogy, which was once again trying to reach the big screen last March. Well, it seems that the production has hit another snag, one that is bad for Lowry fans, but great for followers of JK Rowling and Harry Potter. On her blog, Lowry says that David Yates was going to helm The Giver after finishing the next Potter flick -- Half-Blood Prince. However, she goes on to say: "But he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years. Maybe the opening of this film could be held simultaneously with my celebration-of-life service after I succumb to old age? Or the producers will decide to get a different director. Stand by. But without holding your breath."
If this is true, it means that Yates will be behind three of the series' films -- Harry Potter and the ... Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows -- in other words, all of the final films. Hopefully he won't have to deal with any romantic turmoil on the set!
Speak out, Potter fans! Do you want him tackling the final installment, or is there someone else you would rather have helming the Hallows?

Bring back Alfonso Cuaron!
(Though Del Toro would have been great too, but he seems to have a lot on his plate at the moment.)

I know they fell in love with Yates after "Phoenix," but honestly, I was really disappointed with the direction of the film after Newell and especially Cuaron revitalized the franchise. (Shouldn't the demise of Sirius Black have been a DEVASTATING moment?) Now, the last I heard, they were going to try to make two movies out of "Deathly Hallows," so maybe Cuaron could come back for one of them. Or how about Paul Greengrass? There are so many action set-pieces in the book that his style would be extraordinary.
(P.S. - I did feel that Yates did a beautiful job with "The Girl in the Cafe.")

Overall, Yates did a good job with Order of the Pheonix, sure there were a few differences from the book that I didn't care for. As for him direction Hallows..he could be alright, but I was thinking Tim Burton would have been good for the final 2 in the series...Half Blood Prince is very dark, and would have been right up Burton's ally. Speilberg would be a good choice, however he passed on the first one when asked to do it; so I doubt the studio would come back to him. Peter Jackson may have been an interesting.

There is no way Spielberg could direct the film without taking too much control. I mean, did Jurassic Park even resemble the novels?
The films are getting better, but as of now they're nowhere close to Oscar material - even with the amazing cast. Perhaps Yates has it in him, but I think the novels are too centred around specific plot points for any director to do a completely faithful adaptation that isn't 14 hours long.
I don't know what the answer is, but thus far Yates' films are the best ones in my opinion.

Ahh! I say Speilberg should direct the film, and Jerry Bruckheimer should produce it. Jeryy is amazing really. He produced all the Pirates films and so many great televsion series. :) Speilberg and Bruckheimer would make a diamic duo. :D

I think it is terrible news. All we heard before OOTP came out was how wonderful Yates was. And then OOTP was a piece of garbage. I am a HUGE Potter fan and understand the movies and books are linked yet distinct from one another, but OOTP was just a poorly done movie. Too much emphasis was on mood and feel and not enough on the actual characters and storyline. Totally agree with the previous comment on Siruis. And the apparating looked more like the smoke monster from Lost then anything in HP. The biggest disaster was the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort, which could have been cinematic gold, but instead was boring and short. That was such a good moment in the book and everything none of the emotion or gravity of that fight from the book translated into the movie.
Fire Yates, hire Del Toro, or Shyamalan, or bring back Cuaron. Anyone but Yates again please!

David Yates needs to do it! Him or Mike Newell, they both balanced a good film while staying true to the books. I am all for changing the story for adapting it to a film, Newell and Yates did a great job but the others candidates seem like they will alter it to be full of special effects and cut out all of the stuff that makes the story better. Alfonso, Spielberg and Del Toro should not be allowed to do it! Alfonso did a good job giving the series a fresh look but he does not need to disregard the story in the final installment like he did in the third one. Spielberg is a great director too but he does all his own stories and I can't see him adapting a book like this to a film without ten million explosions and next to no story. Del Toro is also a great director of his own stories but I feel like he would take the story in too many directions that will alter it a bit too different from how the book is, but I prefer him over Spielberg and Alfonso.

Please God not Alfonso Cuaron! He put pointless scenes of the whomping willow and left out important things like, hmm who it was who made the map. Cause that's not even slightly important.
And Not David Yates! Why wasn't there a decent fight at the Ministry. I mean What the *&%$ was that about? That was the stupidest crap I have ever seen. Did anyone else feel like they were ripped off at the theatre? I know that Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood & HUGE fan) wasn't happy since she never actually said what she thought of the movie. Makes one think when the ppl in the movie don't like it doesn't it.
Oh and I know that some of you are gonna be like "well it's the movie not the book." Well guess what? The reason why there's a movie is because of the book! The books were Great, why change it?

Yates and Cuaron collectively made the worst potter films. Both should be baned from future installments.

This is terrible news. The fact is, even if you thought Cuaron did a bad job with adapting PoA to film, as a stand-alone movie it's probably the best one. The same can not be said for Yates and OotP.
It was bad as a stand-alone and as an adapted. I don't understand why the people at WB like this guy so much. Maybe he's a good kiss ass that rolls over for every idea the studio heads make, thus the reason OotP was so bloody awful and the reason they like him so friggin' much. Makes sense to me.

Ben - Are you kidding? Tim Burton? Talk about someone who wouldn't even come close to doing the book justice. Burton would transform as much stuff as he could to his own vision. If people think Cuaron was bad, Burton would turn HP into a goofy-assed nightmare world like all of his movies.

Ummm... Cuaron did not personally "disregard the story" or "adapt" Azkaban. There was a screenwriter involved. And J.K. Rowling has personal approval of what stays in and what comes out. So if you don't like the way he's directed the movie, that's one thing, but in this series the director really doesn't have much to say about what to omit.
