Will Hugh Jackman Partake in Post-Wolverine Follies?
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Casting, RumorMonger
I don't know what it is, but I can barely muster up any sort interest for Hugh Jackman as an actor. I don't mind him, and I have nothing against him, but there's just this armor of indifference that he has yet to pierce. That is, unless he's got his adamantium on. Then, well, I'll follow him to the ends of the Earth. I guess it's just an example of what perfect casting can do -- Wolverine is epically wonderful, and Jackman, he's just alright. The latest rumor circling the project gossip mill is that Jackman might wipe away his gritty stints in Australia and Wolverine with some more fancy showtunes. Variety says that producer Pierre Cossette is looking to bring back Broadway's The Will Rogers Follies with Hugh playing Will -- the role that Keith Caradine originally played. I'm thinking that this is mostly a pipe dream, but Jackman is no stranger to the stage, so it wouldn't be completely surprising if this happens.
But this leads me to a question: Will Jackman ever bring his two careers together? On-screen, he's usually a dramatic guy, or a tough guy, but on stage, he can get quite flamboyant (like, oh, The Boy From Oz). So far, they really haven't met. Is this a good thing? Should they ever meet? What would it do for his career?

I love coming here and staying up to date on what is going on in movies but lately this place is so stupid. I can no longer read the taxi cab driver or waiter or some other ignorant person's take on the Oscars or silly questions like Is Juno hot? Do teenagers find her sexy? How I met my wife after five dates. Is this for real? Thought this was a serious site...grow up!

I'm not really interested in your opinions, just the news. Try to lead with the news. Analysis is all right after that, but why did I have to read 4 paragraphs of passive-agressive tripe to get to the point of the story?
Also, I think the two should meet. THE BOY FROM OZ, done cinematically with a proper director would be an almost guarunteed Oscar.

Well, as someone who thinks that Hugh Jackman is THE BEST there is, I don't get your indifference at all....but to each his own. Having seen him perform on Broadway 30+ times, I would say that he has no equal today as a true triple-threat stage performer. It is a complete puzzle to me why Hugh's outstanding performances in the 2006 movies "The Prestige" and "The Fountain" did not give him the superstar status he deserves. Both very diverse roles, both heartbreaking in their own way.
As for whether or not Hugh should do a movie musical - absolutely! And many of his fans are very frustrated that he has not yet done so - in part, no doubt, because his schedule has kept him very busy. I am NOT in favor of him doing a film version of "The Boy From Oz". As terrific as his performance was, much of the appeal was his extraordinary rapport with the audience. He just oozes charisma. I doubt that show would transfer well to the big screen (tho' many fans disagree with me). Hugh's production company is developing a remake of "Carousel", and he would be a terrific Billy Bigelow. But for now, he is busy with the "Wolverine" spin-off. I have no doubt that Hugh will enjoy a long, successful career in film and on stage -- he is simply too talented not to.
