Could Smallville's Lex Luthor Be the New Freddy Krueger?
Filed under: Comedy, Horror, Casting, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
When an established character or film is finding new life in a remake, I find it very, very rare that I'm ever agreeable, let alone impressed, with who the casting honchos come up with. The last time I oohed, it was over Christian Bale in Batman Begins -- because my friend and I had spent one long car ride casting every superhero with their perfect actor/actress counterpart, and Bale was our Dark Knight pick. But this time, I didn't come up with the replacement, and while it's just a very vague rumor, I wouldn't mind it being fact.A Cinema Blend source says that Michael Rosenbaum has been lunching with Michael Bay. The assumption: this could mean that he's talking with the director about the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street remake. It's a huge guess, but it's one I'd be quite happy with. Oh yeah, and Rosenbaum is the baldie Lex Luthor in Smallville.
While I don't watch the show, I can completely see the actor take over Robert Englund's shoes -- and this is coming from someone who adores the series -- ever since I found my kid self at a Just the Ten of Us taping with a whole slew of Nightmare cast members. I loved the humor mashed in with creepiness and some absolutely ridiculous deaths -- like Brooke Theiss' demise by bug.
I think Rosenbaum could make it work, but what do you think?

In my head...I see Ben Foster at the perfect new Freddy. He has the look, the voice, and can be truley creepy, and funny too. Though I am a Smallville Fan and I like the Lex character...I still think Foster would be the perfect replacement, though I see Foster becoming too big of an actor for the part to continue with sequels the way Robert did.

I understand that nobody likes remakes, but it's just because they need the name recognition to put people in the seats. Look at "Hatchet", a decent slasher flick that made almost no money. If that had been Freddy Krueger, the name recognition alone would have drawn a crowd.
They just want to throw together a crappy script made for as little money as possible and throw the "elm street" name in the title.

I think an Elm Street remake is one of the very few franchise remakes that could actually be pretty interesting and original because it does not follow the same set of rules of most slasher movies. First off, the killer has a personality and a sense of showmanship...lol. Also, the kills can be extremly creative because they are not based in reality...so todays technology can allow some trluey off the wall dream worlds and kills. As long as they are not lazy about it. Freddy is the game show host of movie mosters. I am 34 and grew up with the Elm Street movies.....I soo dont want a new actor to play Freddy but if they have to do it...please bring us Ben Foster.

I think of all the slasher type movies that are being remade nightmare on elm street would be the best because you can go in so many different directions with a man who enters your dreams. The nightmare franchise was always my favorite with the exception of the second one which sucked. I could see Micheal Rosenbaum playing the part of Freddy Krueger, but Robert Englund is not that old where he could,nt revive the role. I can't imagine anyone better then him.

I have been a fan of the Elm Street Movies, Tv Series, books you name it. At first I heard they were going to do a prequel to the the whole thing, this excited me more, because of the fact that they have hinted of Freddy's past in previous movies, and in the Tv Series (Freddy's Nightmares) we see Freddy's Court case being set free and how he kindnapped the kids (Englund's face was never seen without makeup though, only from behind), and to me making a prequel and telling the stroy of how messed up Freddy was, before the dream demon stuff would be amazing.
But I have to say this, the success of the Franchise was not because of the stellar writing of the stories (that is sarcasim) but because of Robert Englund, he is Freddy, just like Stallone is Rocky, Marlon Brando is Don Vito Corleone, Shatner is Kirk, & Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford.
I think replacing him is the worst thing they can do, hey was Tyler Mane a good Michael Myers? (NO), or Vince Vaughn a good Anthony Perkins (NO). The series sold because of Englund. You can get anyone to play Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface.
I will go see the movie nevertheless, Englund's movements, laughs, and diction is what made that character, I have seen live footage from award shows, and listened to the commentary on the movies, he can hop into the character in a whim. OH WELL!!!

As a long time Freddy fan I was horrified to find out they were remaking the series without Englund. As has been said already he makes Freddy like Harrison Ford makes Indiana Jones.
However, if someone else has to play him - I would love to see Rosenbaum get a chance. He is one of the few I think could at least get close. But NO ONE will ever replace Englund.
