Cinematical staff did pretty well with our predictions, and so did our readers. You guys picked the winners for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Adapated Screenplay -- the same categories we got right. We missed Best Doc and both actress categories. Not bad overall.
What do you think about this year's Oscars? Did you think Jon Stewart did a good job with the hosting? Aside from the part where he kind of disappeared for the last hour, but I guess they usually do that towards the end when everyone wants to wrap it up already and get to the parties. What were the big surprises of the night? Any huge disappointments? (Go ahead, anti Diablo Cody contingent. You can say it.)
Oh, and who looked awesome, and who didn't? I thought Marion Cotillard, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Anne Hathaway had the best looks of the night among the ladies. On the guy's side, Johnny Depp and George Clooney both looked hot, and so did Denzel Washington. And Glen Hansard ... yeah, he was adorable too. I'm just saying.
Time for your thoughts on Hollywood's big night -- discuss away!

I thought that the Oscars went the way most expected them to. It was great to see "No Country" get the awards it did!
I think the surprises were Tilda Swinton as Best Supporting Actress, Marion Cotillard (to a degree) as Best Actress as well as a few others.
A good show, I would say! Well done, and not too long. The Oscar retrospectives were especially good.

Sound editing/mixing for the Bourne Ultimatum: JOKE
No Country had a much better audio track and it didn't even have a score to back it up. The subtle background sounds were amazing, and apparently completely overlooked.

Swinton winning was a surprise because she isn't on screen for very long and didn't really do anything out of the ordinary.
Marion was a surprise because I don't think her film got to many people (not that getting to people means winning) and because I think that if Ellen Page was to be beat out, there were more deserving candidates. Page was really the only snub in my opinion.
Once's Falling Slowly had to win.
NCFOM was very good. I tend to think they should have given TWBB a bit of love with ONE of the awards. But really can't be disappointed.
A minor snub would be the FX category where Golden Compass beat Transformers? Really? Was anyone paying attention? Hanging chads?

I was a bit disappointed, but not that surprised, about TWBB's virtual shutout, except for the actor prize. PTA's probably having a (well-deserved, in my opinion) hissy fit right about now. The only other real surprise to me was Marion Cotillard -- it seems like Julie Christie and Ellen Page split the vote and let a dark horse win. I don't mind, though, she seemed so genuinely excited and shocked to win that it made me happy.

I did in fact know that she won the BAFTA and the Golden Globe, but if you read anything about these awards before the ceremony, she was not favored to win. Whether I've seen the movie or not isn't really that relevant, as I didn't say she was good, bad, or indifferent.

I have to admit I did not watch the awards so I cannot comment on the show itself, but I was amazed at one of the awards. Bourne Ultimatum for Best Film Editing. A five year old could have filmed that better. Hollywood needs to get a clue when it comes to filming these days. Shaking the camera around and panning too fast does not make for a good film. You might get by with that for action scenes like the start of Saving Private Ryan, but shooting an entire film like that, no way! They missed the boat on that one.

Dude, the movie was awful we are all intelligent people who can agree on that. That doesn't change the fact that the visual effects were amazing and from a technical standpoint absolutely revolutionary. There were movements that were faster than the human eye could perceive.
The movie was dogshit, but the effects set the standard for the next 5 years.

Nice to see the Academy snub the American actors who were so willingly to snub the Oscars for the sake of the writers, All acting awards went to non-American actors. That will teach them for holding the Oscars in contempt.

One question, didn't Once come out in 2006, if so how was it eligible for the 2007 Oscars? or was it filmed in 2006 and released in 2007?

jon stewart was SOOO BORING. i didn't laugh once.
LOVE that diablo won. although the acting was great in Juno, the writing is what helped the actors to be great.
but seriously, why didn't they ask ellen to host again?
jon stewart was so so boring!

Ellen Paige got screwed, There Will Be Blood and Micahel Claytonwere both betetr than No country in my opinion, other than that I'm fine with the show. I would've given Casey Affleck best support and Michael Clayton best picture.

I am not really surprised that Juno only won Screenplay. But, I will say that I am uber happy that the hometown Diablo got her Oscar.

The only award issue I have is that There Will Be Blood should have won Best Picture! No Country was good, but TWBB was ten times better.
:) But I'm glad Javier Bardem won!

I also did not watch the Oscars, but I noticed several comments about some people being surprised about Marion Cotillard winning for her performance of Edit Piaf. That was the only film I did see of the Oscar nominees and wondered if the commenters hadn't seen it. It was the most powerful performance I had seen in a number of years by an actress, and even though I didn't see the others, Miss Cotillard was very deserving.
