Drew Goddard Gets Back to 'Buffy'
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Scripts, Remakes and Sequels
While a number of Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum have had continued success, the most explosive post-fang career for the people behind the scenes is Drew Goddard. He perked things up at the end of the series with some incredibly memorable episodes, then moved to Angel, Alias, and Lost. However, his success is even on the big screen now, as he's the pen behind Cloverfield, and he will be writing the upcoming sequel.Still, in all of this action, he found time to write one of the comic arcs for Buffy, Season Eight. In his 4-issue arc, called Wolves at the Gate, (check out the cover over at Hollywood North Report) the vampire slayer heads to Tokyo to fight not werewolves, but the fanged ones. His involvement should make for a good read, but it begs a bigger question -- since he's continuing to be involved in the Buffyverse, and is finding success in film, could this mean good things for a potential Buffy movie?
Sarah Michelle Gellar says it wouldn't work, but then again, she says the movie failed because "the story was better told over a long arc," rather than recognizing that the story was massacred. David Boreanaz has been notoriously against further Buffy involvement, but there's always James Marsters to pick up the sexy slant. If there was any time to do it, I would say it's now. The comic is doing amazingly well. Goddard could make something great with Whedon. None of the cast is extremely busy, and many could use a professional upper. They could add in some Summer Glau as another slayer, when she's on break from The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and up the fanboy/fangirl cred even more.
And heck, they could even make it another musical. Yes, I realize I'm dreaming, but sometimes it's nice to dream. If you were going to make a Buffy film, who would you involve, and what would happen?

I see your Summer Glau fantasy, and I raise you: how about Katee Sackhoff as either a new slayer or a good-guy vampire? *g*

Unless they had ALL of the major stars/characters - Buffy, Angel, Spike, Willow, Xander, Giles, Faith, Wesley, Gunn, Cordelia and maybe Anya reincarnated - the movie wouldn't have the interest of the die hard fans.
But ProgGrrl has given me a great idea .....We've already had the 2 male vamps with a soul ..... let's throw in a FEMALE vamp with a soul! What an interesting dynamic! Would she fall for Angel or Spike? And who would Buffy ultimately choose in the end?
Somebody, please, please write this screenplay!

Jamie

Someone will probably ask them this at the upcoming reunion at Paleyfest. It'll probably hard to get SMG and David on board as they seem to like to distance themselves from Buffy.
Maybe Drew's connections can bring in somebody from Lost? I can see Ben with fangs.
But Katee would be good as a female vamp with a soul. I love it when the BSG and Buffy universes mesh (like Jane Espenson writing/exec producing BSG)...and bring in some Firefly people in too. It'll be the greatest, nerdiest sci-fi movie evah.

As a die-hard fan of the Buffy-universe. I am convinced that a movie would in fact work now, as a matter of fact the original movie worked for a lot of us just the way it was. If a new addition to the Buffy-universe were well written, scripted, acted and produced~it should also be just as well received. Although the series was well produced I personally feel it was the writing and the actors that made it such a success. They were able to transmit all of the emotions that we, as teenagers, went through, and a lot of us seriously identified with scenarios in the show.
I could agree with the star of the show and think that a movie would not work because it would definitely be hard (though not impossible) to top the finale to the series. I also have to put another plug in for the star of the show. Everyone should remember that she became enormously successful AFTER the series had begun and she stayed with the show until the end (several more seasons). Not only did she stay, but I think she put a superior amount of effort into the role (watch the dvd's). This is and was in direct contrast with numerous actors that have jumped ship from TV series after they hit it big in movies, causing the series to fold and putting many people out of work. If an attempt is made to bring the series to life once again on the big screen, I hope that everyone involved is committed to the project like they were with the series, otherwise why bother? Don't forget that the series was resurrected following season 5 and ran for two more full seasons.

I love Buffy--seriously, I think it's like greatest thing ever made--but for now, I'm perfectly content with the brilliant Season 8, as well as the Angel: After the Fall miniseries.
I'm not saying I wouldn't love for there to be a movie, but I'm not dying for it the way I would for a Serenity sequel.
And Summer as a Slayer? Eh, that's a little too River Tam-ish.

Well, to be frank, she doesn't say "No" in the piece. She says "Show me a good script and I'm there."

Great post, great discussion, so I don't feel so bad about pointing out that "begging a question" is not synonymous with "raising a question."
Oh, and I heart Buffy.
