Monday Morning Poll: Oscar's Biggest Upset?
Filed under: Awards, Fandom, Oscar Watch, Monday Morning Poll
I have such a huge Oscars hangover this morning. Did anyone theme it for the night? I cooked some mean-ass burgers in honor of Juno, then attempted to make a few milkshakes (in honor of There Will be Blood) before realizing I had no ice cream. Anyone get nutty and make Ratatouille? Anyway, when it comes to the day after the Oscars, talk usually surrounds the big surprises. What were the shockers? Personally, I totally thought Transformers would walk away with at least one Oscar for special effects or sound, and Marion Cotillard winning best actress came somewhat as a surprise. I mean, a French actress winning best actress for a foreign language film that practically NO ONE saw?
And Tilda Swinton? Really? Do cracked-out single mothers not mean anything to the Academy voters? Amy Ryan definitely should've won in that category. Other surprises -- who the hell let Gary Busey onto the red carpet? Did you see him lick Jennifer Garner's neck? Poor girl. Unfortunately, her husband was f**king Jimmy Kimmel at the time and couldn't be there to rescue her. But anyway, last night's biggest upset? In your opinion, who was it? (And is it okay to say that my new crush is Marion Cotillard. Holy crap did she look fantastic!)

I've decided that any time I'm impressed with the performance of an older actor/actress, they'll get robbed by someone much younger. Bah. My curse continues.

Tilda Swinton won for THAT performance? The dull, emotionless, flat, totally unremarkable character played by a dull, emotionless, unremarkable actress in a dull, emotionless, flat, totally unremarkable film? WTF?

it was understated, subtle and intelligent are you familiar with acting of that style in that type of film. Maybe you should stick to Pirates of the Caribbean?

I never liked Helen Page but that doesn't mean she is not a good actress. I think if she had gotten the Oscar it would have done her more harm than good, just look at what has happened to other actors who get it so early in their career, Anna Paquin never got that high again. I am sure she will get many chances in the future. Just because the film is in another language, doesn't take away from Cotillard being a wonderful actress. See the movie and you will understand, she is wonderful and deserved it fully.

of all the things to rag on transformers about, can we not all agree it's set the standard for stunning cgi work, or at least was the best of this year?
and it lost to talking polar bears? in a movie no one bothered to see?
While that had me miffed, the only time i straight out thought someone was robbed was definitely amy ryan not winning best supporting actress.

Sorry, Dlac. The effects in Transformers ruined it for me.
They were way overdesigned and difficult to make heads or tails of. When you stood still, they had a fighting chance; in motion, they were all blurs of pointy metal. The CGI guys undoubtedly knew what they were doing but the finished result was too much for the human eye to perceive. I'm not that old and I'm saying this; imagine what the Academy was thinking?

Actually in the more liberal and tolerant UK where the movie wasnt the victim of an ill conceived with hunt- roll on free expression there!!!- the movie did really well, loads of folk saw it and enjoyed it. It was more intelligent than the ridiculous Transformers and was free of blatant product placement and middle aged high school students.

Tilda Swinton was excellent in Michael Clayton a thoughtful intelligent film that relied in understated acting. Marion Cottier was brilliant as Edith Piaf and totally captured her self destructive, passion. Daniel Day Louis was very good as was Javier Bardem. I guess the surprise for me was that such intellgent performances and well conceived movies that receive a more sympathetic audience internationally than in the States were acknowledged. Not one American actor took home a major award, is this because increasingly they have plastic hair, facelifts, keyboard teeth and are a bit wooden- not all of them of course, but you know its not always about the popcorn demographic.

Sorry about that, that was uncalled for. I am an asshole. Anglophilia just annoys me, I'll try not to be the ugly American again.
Man, Jame Murphy had it right, it is hard to be an intelligent person who enjoys the US right now.

There was nothing thoughtful about Clayton. It was just a slow, banal movie lacking in originality. Swinton's character (like all of the parts in the movie) was a cardboard creation of a really shoddy writer/director.

"michael clayton" was such an annoying movie, it seemed like clooney was just begging for an oscar. giving it to tilda swinton was just the perfect "fuck you" to clooney. somebody in his movie won an oscar, but it wasn't one he could claim credit for. i love it.
not that she deserved it, though.

How was Once an upset? We saw what happened last year when a film gets 3 song nods (they cancel out) and no one's going to vote for a good song from a horrible movie.
Once was one of THE success stories of last year, and it is ripe with stunning music. It was totally the frontrunner IMO.

Enchanted was a horrible movie? No, you must have that confused with Once, which was unwatchably pretentious dogcrap. Seriously, staying awake through that movie would take meth AND a jolt cola.

I just watched Michael Clayton. Really a very good movie, however i don't understand how Tilda Swinton, who was only in the movie maybe 25 minutes and spoke may 3 dozen words won an OSCAR! OMG what is the matter with the Academy? I think George Clooney really deserved to win, and I'm not a big fan of George!

Better than the year Judi Dench won in the same category for an eight-minute performance in "Shakespeare in Love".
