Films of the Same Name: 'Shelter'
Filed under: Drama, Gay & Lesbian, Independent, Romance, Sports, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips
Yesterday, I wrote about the upcoming movie Shelter, which will star Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. But did you know that there's almost twenty "Shelter" films listed over on IMDb? Some are foreign, a couple were on television, and the rest all just have the same name. (I guess no one checks their title on that wonderfully handy database.) While one gears up to get bloody, another is going into limited release this April. I was alerted to this other project by a certain Mr. W, who was reading Cinematical and was so excited to see that I was writing about Shelter. Then he saw that my Shelter wasn't his Shelter. This other movie, all wrapped up and waiting for the big screen, is a romantic sports drama written and directed by Jonah Markowitz, and it's just as worthy of a post.
The story: Although he has dreams of going to art school, a young surfer named Zach works in a crappy job and helps take care of his sister's son. When his best friend's older brother Shaun comes home and the two fall for each other, Zach is caught between his own passions and his family's needs. It looks like a great film, and it's already won a bunch of awards at Gay & Lesbian fests -- from Best Film and Best Cinematography to Favorite Feature. But don't just take my word for it, or the word of all the people behind the films 6 awards, check out the trailer after the jump.

There is no need to check the title of your film. Film titles cannpt be trademarked, so anyone can use any title they want. If you feel Shelter is the best title for your film, name it that! No business has trademarked the title...yet. While we can, name away! Viva la freedom!

Yeah because it's so much fun to wade through a dozen shelters to find the one your looking for. Do you wanna know how many times I special ordered Watchmen at my local video store before I finally gave up? 5.
Viva La freedom my ass, bullshit is what it is.

A friend of mine actually saw the trailer on a DVD he rented, & stated the film is coming to DVD in APril 2008! I live in Phoenix, Z where the film market sucks! Films like "Shelter", "Teeth" etc never ever make it into our city! The only way a film like this willmake it into the Phoenix film market if it can make money!

Yeah your right, I'm sorry for the rough treatment. I special ordered a CD for my niece for her birthday. The store I used to special order it gave nothing more than title and date of release. Not even a picture. I ordered hoping for the best and a month later, and late, it finally arrived. It was the wrong CD. I've had this problem before with other stores sites, where I've only had a title, and the place of buisness dosen't offer an accurate discription, and there's more than one title to choose from. I realize as a writer ideas are borrowed upon, reused, and titles strangers to this concept, but when your a consumer, damn it's frustraiting. I didn't mean freedom was bs, I meant brians assertion that this cofusion is a valid part of freedom, is bs. Well like I said I'm sorry I jumped so hard, I really just had a bad week.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so rough. I don't mean Freedom is BS, I meant brians assertion that confusion brought on by freedom is BS. I could not tell you how many times I have gone to order something from a store or off the web with only a title and an idea of what the story is if it's a DVD, only to find several titles with the same name and no clear discription to figure out wich was the one I'm looking for. As a consumer thats frustrating as hell. But when you come down to it it's the sellers fault for not having a more comprensive system, but when I read this story, just the day after my last special order was messed up, and brians comment, just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. So like I said I'm sorry.
