'Starship Troopers 3' Trailer!

Now with MORE Johnny Rico! Oh yes, those bug-killing troopers are back for a third time in the direct-to-DVD title Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, and the first trailer for the film can be seen above. What can you say? They really do attempt to bring in some of the cheese from the first film, but the smaller budget really shows. In the original, those bugs were dark, nasty and scary. Now, they're, well, kinda cute and funny. Or maybe it's just me -- by all means, watch the trailer yourself and tell me I'm dead wrong. Please. I want to be wrong here. Unfortunately, I know our readers, and I know you folks will probably feel the same way.
Good news is that Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is back reprising his role from the first film, which is sad and quite hilarious (who knew Casper Van Dien would be such a selling point) at the same time. Also starring are Jolene Blalock (as Lola Beck) and Boris Kodjoe (as Dix Hauzer). I do give them credit for the names; those always fit the mood of the films. In this third installment, Johnny Rico is now a general and total bad ass, and he apparently leads a group of troops back into battle against the bugs. Isn't that what all the films are about? Look for it to hit DVD shelves later this year.

3. Looks more entertaining than the dreadfull Starship Troopers 2. Keep in mind that Starship Troopers is being directed by the writer of the original Robocop movie

4. That voice-over is horrible...what happened to the guy who voiced in the first movie? his voice had presence when he always ended the message with "would you like to know more"? this voice-over sucks!!

5. Personally, I think the 90's CG series ROUGHNECKS was much better than the film(s). Without the suits (read the book) none of this was ever "Starship Troopers". Loved the design of the bugs and the ships, though.

Well, one thing that people forget is that the first Starship Troopers was actually a very good movie.
Yes, that's what I said- it was a good movie.
Here's why: the first film was a smart investigation of perception and reality. The propaganda pieces and images of teen models fighting the bug scourge of the universe are meant to highlight the differences between imagining war and actually fighting a war.
Furthermore, there is a strong theme of revealing the contrast between experience in the military as an officer, or an enlisted member. In another viewing, consider that Carmen and Johnny as the officer and enlisted perspectives, respectively. The movie then becomes a methodical comparison of the two sides of today's military in a variety of scenarios: training, romance, judgment and error, combat, victory, and defeat.
So, I'm hoping that the maker of this third film picked up on the subtle cues from Veerhoven in his revisiting of the Starship Troopers universe. In that hope, I don't see cheesiness, or parody, but another attempt to try to tell us something about perception and reality; to try to make one last statement about the differences between officers and enlisted troops. Perhaps we will even see a new comparison receive examination.
Whatever the direction of the intrinsic commentary of the film, I am certain the director intends to tell a good story- and oh, by the way... he'll be doing it on a direct to DVD budget.
For that I can be forgiving.
I don't think it's possible for this movie to live up to the first, or exceed it in quality. But that's because I believe the first Starship Troopers to be an excellent movie.
But I will say that I can't wait to see a new take on the old franchise.

1. I didn't think it looked that bad special effects wise, especially for a straight to DVD flick. Its light years ahead of a lot of straight to DVD/sci-fi channel crap.
