'Where The Wild Things Are' Has Release Date

Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are now has a release date , but the question still remains as to what we will see in theatres. Warner Bros has announced that they will release the film on October 16, 2009 -- but rumors still abound that the entire thing will be recast and reshot. Previously, I reported that test screenings had ended in disaster, and the studio was unhappy with the final product. The late release date (one year later than originally planned, and three years after principal photography wrapped) seems to verify the reports, as it is more than enough time to scrap the film and redo it.
Now one fan is throwing off the gloves and begging AICN to help get Jonze's film on the big screen. Mystery Fan is one of the lucky few to have been at the test screening. They loved it. You can pop on over and read the review -- and perhaps hop on the "Save Spike Jonze" bandwagon. Though, I must admit, it is pretty hard to do when so few of us have seen anything. Perhaps Jonze wants to throw some film clips or stills our way? If you're going to go down, you might as well go out swinging ...

Well, hopefully in 10 years we'll be able to buy a 'special edition' DVD (or I guess Blu-Ray by then) with the original version. From the sound of it, the original version sounds great to me, considering the source material. But the studio would rather sell more Happy Meals than actually take a chance and show some artistic integrity- again, consider the source material. It's not supposed to be like 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.

Just want to add that WTWTA is perhaps my favorite children's book/story of all time, and I have very little confidence in the movie after this news (because of WB, not because of Jonze.)

WTWTA was also one of my favorite children's books. I remember liking it because it was a little scary and a little dark. If we make everything for young people with rounded edges and bright colors, they will grow up.. well, like the emo righteous kids of today. Stop coddling. That's how we end up with garbage like Jar Jar.

Was that 2 or 3 min of the film that surfaced not long ago (it was posted about and linked on here) from the scrapped version?

madgamer, the footage that was put out not too long ago wasn't from the film. That was a test. The actor playing 'Max' wasn't the final Max, nor was that where the actual movie was filmed. The voice actor for the monster wasn't the final voice either. The test footage was filmed somewhere in the US, while I believe the actual movie was filmed in Australia (throughout various forests).
Anyway, I really hope this can come out earlier and the original film isn't lost to us and is released. I’ve been waiting for this movie for what seems forever. I’m quite a fan of the original story and I loved everything I’ve heard so far about this movie.
They don’t need to totally kidify this movie for a pre-school audience. Such great fantasy type movies such as The Dark Crystal and The Labyrinth were made in the past and they had their scary scenes, the creatures were also created by the Jim Henson company (as is the case in WTWTA). Another movie to remember is ‘The NeverEnding Story’. These are classics!
Spike Jonze and his work is amazing. The story is about monsters who live in the wild so it isn’t all fluff and flowers.
Please, please, please Warner Brothers see the amazing piece of work already in front of you and don’t change it. This is sure to be a classic movie as long as you keep it as it is!
I hope Warner is listening and if not, someone who knows how to get in touch let them know that they shouldn’t wreck a good thing.
