Trailer Park: Ha!

Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Trailer Trash, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Trailers and Clips

Intense drama, romance, horror, even documentaries are just fine. Right now, though, I'm in the mood for trailers that will make me laugh.

Pineapple Express
I've got to say I'm liking this Seth Rogen guy. 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, it's all good. I'm looking forward to Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and on a recent rewatching of Donnie Darko I realized for the first time that's Rogen playing scumbag Ricky Danforth. The red band trailer for Pineapple Express has Rogen smoking dope (big stretch, I know) and managing to be quite funny while doing so. Spider-man's James Franco is Rogen's stoner sidekick and the two find themselves on the run after witnessing a murder committed by Gary Cole. Rogen also serves as co-writer, so I've got high expectations. Erik Davis also posted some pretty good things about the trailer not long ago. By the way, if you have trouble connecting to the official SONY pictures link above like I was, you can see a grainier but more reliable version on YouTube.

Step Brothers
What is it about someone wearing a Pablo Cruise shirt that I find so damn funny? I haven't yet had the chance to see Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell's new flick that's opening this week, but this trailer has already got me looking forward to his next effort. Step Brothers stars Ferrell and Talladega Nights co-star John C. Reilly as a pair of forty-ish slackers who not only still live with their parents, but now find themselves to be step-brothers when Ferrell's mother marries Reilly's father. Animosity soon gives way to friendship, and these two man-children are faced with having to get jobs and move out. This looks funny as hell and that July 25 release date can't come soon enough.

Sex and the City: The Movie

I guess this would be more of a dramedy than a flat out comedy. I know the TV show has a huge fan base, so I'm sure there will be plenty of people looking forward to the big screen version. I guess I've got that whole XY chromosome thing working against me, but I just can't stand the show. I have a colleague who uses the Sex and the City theme as a ring tone, and whenever her cell phone rings I have this overwhelming urge to change the channel. All four of the show's leads are returning, plus Chris Noth as Mr. Big, who will finally be making an honest woman of Carrie. Or will he? I'm not seeing anything in the trailer to change my mind, so when this hits U.S. theaters on May 30 I'll find something else to do.

Get Smart
I'm loving the concept, I'm loving the cast, but I'm only so-so on this new full length trailer. It's not that it's not an entertaining trailer, I was just hoping for more. I always liked the TV series, and a few of the recurring gags like the cone of silence and the phrase "missed it by that much" are present. There's a pretty funny exchange between Steve Carell as ultra dorky agent Maxwell Smart and KAOS agent Siegfried played by Terence Stamp. Also, is it just me or does Anne Hathaway (who is playing Agent 99) get prettier with each film? I was hoping for more laughs, but I still plan to see this when it comes out on June 20.

Iron Man
Not a comedy by any stretch, but there is a damn funny line when Gwynneth Paltrow catches Robert Downey, Jr. in the Iron Man armor and he says "Let's face it, this not the worst thing you've caught me doing." This is the new full length trailer, and we get a better look at all of the incarnations of the armor and quite a few special effects shots. Iron Man certainly isn't as well known to the non-comic book reading public as the X-Men or Spider-man, but I suspect that will change once this gets released on May 2.

And here are this week's new trailers from AOL Moviefone:
  • The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 - More female bonding, more pants. Here's the trailer:

  • Romulus, My Father - The story of Romulus (Eric Bana) and his relationship with his wife and his son.
  • The Happening - M. Night Shyamalan's latest about a family fleeing a natural disaster that threatens all of humanity. Check out the trailer here:

  • City of Men - Trailer No. 2 - Two lifelong friends find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war in Brazil.
  • The Visitor - A college professor befriends two illegal immigrants he finds staying in his apartment.
  • Love Guru - Mike Meyers plays a guru charged with the responsibility of reuniting a pro hockey player with his estranged wife.
