Despite an intense marketing push, Will Ferrell's latest sports comedy just couldn't hold up to his previous two efforts. Semi-Pro did take the number one spot at the box office this weekend, but it did so with a measly $15 million. Compared to last year's Blades of Glory (opened with $33 million) and Talladega Nights (opened with $47 million), that $15 million doesn't look so great -- and it's certainly not the way New Line wanted to go out (even though they are, technically, going out on top).
So why didn't anyone go see this film? Granted, people did go see it (enough for $15 million), but it played in over 3,000 theaters. Did the R rating actually hurt the film? Keep in mind, both Blades and Talladega Nights were PG-13 -- so did a raunchy, foul-mouthed Ferrell keep audiences away? Or was it the supporting cast? Woody Harrelson and Andre Benjamin aren't Jon 'Napoleon Dynamite" Heder and Sacha "Borat" Baron Cohen. Did Ferrell need a little more juice around him in order to score bigger buckets? Maybe the whole '70s basketball thing wasn't so appealing? I guess the bigger question should be: Does this $15 million opening signal the beginning of the end of Ferrell's reign over the box office?
Why did you stay away from Semi-Pro, which I heard was actually pretty damn funny?

I went and saw it and wasted my money. This movie was horrible. Granted, there were a few 'chuckle moments,' but the rest of this fell flat on it's face.
They tried to hard and you could see the jokes coming a mile away.
Will Farrell's movies are either hit or miss, and this one is a BIG miss.

Will Ferrell is a talentless hack. He will go the way of Pauly Shore, who actually had more talent than WF.
Clinton Howard is a better actor than WF.
WF is a one trick pony with pendantic acting ability. Maybe someone will cast him as the new Ernest AKA Jim Varney.
Come to think of it, even JV had more talent than WF.
Let's see: Goofy Anchorman, Goofy Skater, Goofy Race Car driver, Goofy Basketball Star. Goofy Cheerleader, Goofy Disco...ummm, see the trend? Stop paying this clown money!

hahaha, you crack me up w/ you're idiocy. Pauly Shore? Did Will Ferrell sleep w/ your girlfriend or something?
I went and saw Semi-Pro and laughed my ass off. Let's face it guys, if you're expecting anything other than low-brow comedy you're going to the wrong movie. Semi-Pro is what it is, and succeeds and making people laugh.
On a separate note, he is actually a good actor. Check out 'Winter Passing' if you think he plays the same character over and over.

Let's face it....these movies are so much better on DVD anyway. They'll release it as "Unrated" with a blooper reel, featurettes, deleted scenes and silly commentaries. I rarely see his films in the theater.

I think people are finally realizing that Will Ferrell plays the same character, himself, in every movie. Buddy the Elf and Mugatu were different but they were still him. I didn't see the one movie, Stranger than Fiction, but from what I saw it was still him playing himself.
He's a talented guy but he really is just a one trick pony.

I think Ferrel works better as a side character that steals the show. Too much Will Ferrel can get old quick.

@Rich - Stranger Than Fiction is actually the one Will Ferrell movie that's worth watching. The silly contrivances of most of his characters turn me off, but that movie came across as genuine.

Never found Will Ferrell even remotely humorous. His characters are always the extremely dimwitted dolts convinced they're smarter than everyone else. Yet very rarely does anyone actually let him on to this.
Bothers me. More grating than funny. It's not lovably stupid it's obnoxiously stupid.
Then again, people loved Napoleon Dynamite, which was more of the same, so...

I like Will Ferell, and I agree about Stranger Than Fiction, but as far as this movie goes.... I feel like I've seen this movie already and I have no desire to go and pay 10 bucks to see it again.

i like will ferell - anchorman is one of my favorite movies - but i'm not going to actually pay money to see one of his new movies. i can just go watch blades of glory again for the exact same experience.
i'll probably torrent semi-pro, but i doubt it will be worth buying.

Firstly, I am a fan of Will Ferrell and I intend on seeing it. I even really wanted to go see it opening weekend, just didnt get the chance.
However, i do think the R rating is what hurt it. WF's movies bank on potty humor and i think they find their primary fan-bank in the teenage crowd. So restricting sales to those 17 and older excludes a good chunk of the teenage crowd that hangs around the malls on friday nights. Not that they didnt all see it, they just werent able to buy tickets for it and probably snuck in.
As for WF's acting ability, I think in his mind hes proven himself to be an adaptable actor through roles like those in Winter Passing or Stranger Than Fiction, and in my mind he has too. however, i will acknowledge the fact that the movies the studios want him to make are the slapstick, bathroom humor movies like this one, and that the one-trick-pony stereotype is probably one hes just gonna have to deal with. Personally, i get a kick out of every one of his formulaic comedies. I think in the film world, his slapstick bathroom humor is sort-of my guilty pleasure.

I would have selected Starting to dislike Will Ferrel but the truth is I've hated him since a little before his Old School days. He's doing the same damn dumb gun character in every thing he's in and it had already started to wear on me then. Stranger Than Fiction was the only movie I saw him in that I found enjoyable in the last few years and I almost didn't see it because he was in it.

A lot of haters on here... I loved this movie and thought it was certainly different enough from his other sports flicks to merit seeing. The supporting cast was funny, and I would not hesitate to see another Ferrell sports movie. I think that the R rating is what hurt it most, although it may have actually made the movie better.

juvenile nonsense- when your core demographic is too old to get into the film its bound to hurt the takings! People in Britain stare blankly at Will Ferrel, he isnt funny. Lets hope now that hes made enough cash to pay off his double glazing hell bow out for a while. An export that should have stayed off shore!!!

I don't understand....how does an R rating hurt the film? If someone wants to see it, no matter what their age....they'll get in. I know I did when I was underage.

I'm hoping America has come to terms with it's infatuation with Will Ferrell - this guy is a one trick pony and I've never cared for his...well...humor, if you want to call it that.

If it is indeed a "totally different movie" than his other sports movies why did they make the trailer look exactly the same? It just looks like the same tired BS. I loved Anchorman but hated Talledega Nights AND Blades of Glory - not sure which I hated more but they were both bad, bad, bad. Seeing the same character do the same garbage gets old really quick and is not worth $10.

Will Ferrell is a one trick comedy pony - he should move to straight acting, as in Stranger Than Fiction, instead, as he's actually rather a good actor.
