RIP: Reel Important People -- March 3, 2008

  • Carl Pingitore (1924-2008) - Editor of Dirty Harry, for which he was also an associate producer, Play Misty for Me, Across 110th Street, Prime Cut and That Man Bolt. He won an Emmy for producing the series Police Story and was nominated for producing the 1981 TV documentary High Hopes: The Capra Years, about film director Frank Capra. He died February 23, in Eureka, California. (Times-Standard)
  • Richard Baer (1928-2008) - Television writer (Bewitched) who also apparently appeared uncredited in Citizen Kane as a character called "Hillman". He also wrote a 1958 Columbia Pictures-released film titled Life Begins at 17. He died February 22 in Santa Monica, California. (Variety)
  • William F. Buckley Jr. (1925-2008) - Author and conservative commentator who appears as himself in the documentaries Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, Hugh Hefner: Once Upon a Time, The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg, New York in the Fifties, The Source, Kerouac, the Movie, What Happened to Kerouac? and Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride: Hunter S. Thompson on Film. He died of emphysema February 27, in Stamford, Connecticut. (Variety)
  • W.C. Heinz (1915-2008) - Journalist and novelist who co-wrote the novel MASH, which was adapted into a film and television series, with H. Richard Hornberger (jointly they used the pseudonym Richard Hooker). He also appears in Ken Burns' documentary Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. He died February 27, in Montpelier, Vermont. (NY Times)
  • Buddy Miles (1946-2008) - Drummer who played with Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. He appears as himself in the documentaries (A Film About) Jimi Hendrix, Band of Gypsys: Live at the Fillmore East and the upcoming Love-In: A Musical Celebration. He also plays a tour musician in the biopic The Buddy Holly Story. He died February 26 in Austin, Texas. (Variety)
  • Günther Rücker (1924-2008) - German filmmaker who wrote and co-directed The Fiancee. He is better known for co-writing the Stanislaw Lem adaptation First Spaceship on Venus, Der Dritte and The Gleiwitz Case. He died February 24 in Meingingen, Germany. (JungeWelt.de)
  • Mike Smith (1943-2008) - Lead singer and keyboardist for The Dave Clark Five. He appears with the band in the fiction films Catch Us If You Can (aka Having a Wild Weekend) and Get Yourself a College Girl. He died of pneumonia February 28, in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. (AP)
  • Sujatha (1935-2008) - Indian novelist and screenwriter (né S. Rangajaran) who wrote the Tamil dialogue for S. Shankar's Sivaji: The Boss, Indian, Boys and Anniyan and Mani Ratnam's Dil Se ... (From the Heart), Kannathil Muthamittal (A Peck on the Cheek) and Ayitha Ezhuthu. He also wrote the Tamil dialogue for Kandukondain Kandukondain (I Have Found It), which was based on the English film Sense and Sensibility and stars Aishwarya Rai. He died February 27 in Chennai, India. (Variety)
  • Bodil Udsen (1925-2008) - Danish actress who appears in I Am Dina, Taxi to Portugal and Monas verden. She also voiced characters in many animated films, including Samson and Sally and The Long Shadow. She died February 26, in Copenhagen. (The Big Cartoon Forum)
