Alternate 'I Am Legend' Ending Leaked to the Net!
Filed under: Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Trailers and Clips
I don't think I'm alone when I say that I Am Legend was a little bit of a disappointment. Although there were a lot of good things going on (mainly in the performance of Will Smith), it wasn't a great film, and something was missing. Based on Richard Matheson's sci-fi classic, Smith stars as Dr. Robert Neville, a scientist who is immune to a "vampiric plague" that has wiped out humanity. Now an alternate ending to the film has been leaked to the net (thanks to Slash Film for the heads up), which you can check out above, and it gives you the chance to play 'What If?' If you haven't already seen the film, you might want to stop reading now, because I am about to give you one heck of a spoiler.
The theatrical conclusion of the film had Smith sacrificing himself to save two other survivors he has come across. In the new ending, while technically a "happy" one in that our leading man makes it out alive, it is also a little more ambiguous about what they are going to find out there on the road. At the time of production, there was plenty of talk about re-shoots and bad test screenings, and considering how wildly different this ending was to the theatrical cut, it makes you wonder what else got changed along the way.
So, I guess the big question is what do you think of this ending? Would you have preferred it to the original? And more importantly, would it have made Legend a better film?
Update: You can read a description of the alternate ending at The Great Movie Domain

This ending stinks.
I wasn't crazy about the original ending ... but this is silly.

Do you know if this alternate ending will be on the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of the film?

This ending and the movie's theatrical ending SUCK. The book's ending is 10,000 times better. The book's vampires are better, Neville is better and all around the book is superior in every way.

wow, the alt ending is actually worse than the theatrical... a shame really. The movie started off so well but it just fell apart in the last act.

That ending just further clarified that they had no idea how to make the "monsters." Were they just savage beasts? Or did they have some level of intelligence.

According to wikipedia, this will be on the DVD, and so likely was ripped from a early promo copy.

If I were to take the movie for what it is, I like this ending better. It makes more sense to me than the original. The theatrical cut of the movie sort of alluded to the vampire's intelligence but that element never materialized.

I'm torn. While I like the payoff of intelligence in this ending, it's so open-ended that it feels like some suit asked "Hey, what about making it a franchise?" The original ending was too abrupt and just felt like a quick rewrite. I've gone back and forth over this movie a few times and wonder if the movie needed some more editing or if it had too little time to grow.

The scene starts in the lab where neville and the lady and her son are holed up behind the glass barrier with the female vampire were treating.
Neville has the gun out and there's yelling and smashing and some more yelling. The leader vampire comes in and starts up a new round of yelling and smashing. Then, the Leader starts to make some googley eyes at the female vampire. Neville suddenly realizes that the lady vampire had a butterfly tatoo and intuits that the vision is about the Lady Vampire. Neville decides to open the doors and release the lady vampire.
Neville pushes the lady vampire out and instead of ripping him to bits, the vampires just yell at him a lot. Neville wakes up the lady with a syringe he left in a drawer in the desk that just happened to be filled with "wake up drug", the Leader scoops up his girl friend and then the vampires just leave.
Neville and the lady and son, then wash and wax an SVU before loading it up with their belongings and driving off.

jesus are you guys just too lazy to look? found it in less than minute. anyway was exactly what i was thinking as to why the vampires (or whatever) attacked the docs place. I kept saying what if it was the 'leaders' lady that he just wanted to get back? so this ending gave that to me, and was just ok. the one thing i wanted to see was smith and the woman to get down, and with those looks at the end, it sure does seem like they finally got some. haha, its been a long while for that both of them.

Based on the synopsis above, the ending would have been even more miserable. That movie was so slow and uneventful -- I wanted my money back. I'd have demanded it with that ending.

wow, untrusting. My write up is what happens. If you're not going to appreciate someone taking the time to do what you ask, you shouldn't ask for it and you should just go and do a lousy search for it yourself.

Too little time to grow? The story is 50 years old. They destroyed everything that made the book a classic. And replaced those elements with stupidity.

Read the book, people. The film even screwed up what the title means. It doesn't mean Neville is a legend for saving mankind. Not even close.
The filmmakers totally lost the Neville character, the vampires were turned into something silly and every beat of the script was plain wrong. They had the perfect outline and they couldn't follow that...the people behind this film are morons.

How can Cinematical say "Alternate 'I Am Legend' Ending Leaked to the Net!" when this was already posted about a month or 2 ago on Movieweb.com??
I loved how the Specs for the DVD Release of "I'am Legend"
state: Alternate Version of the film with the "Controversial Ending" as a marketing ployto get more bang for the buck!
If the ending was sooooo damn "Controversial" then why wasn't it realeased in theaters in the 1st place, or did what "28 Days Later" did & tack on the SO-Called "Controversial" ending "AFTER" the end credits!
Guess Hollywood was to scared to go to the dark side & went to the sunny side of life!!

SPOLIER ALERT!!
The ending of the book: "I' AM Legend"..
Months later, hunters from the new society capture Neville, and take him for public execution. Before he can be executed, Ruth provides him with pills so that he will feel no pain. Neville takes the pills; as he dies he reflects on how the new society regards him as a monster.
Just as vampires were regarded as legendary monsters that preyed on the vulnerable humans in their beds, Neville has become a mythical figure that kills both vampires and the still-living while they are sleeping. He becomes a legend as the vampires once were, hence the title

Sorry to leave yet another commet, but it just hit me to state that
"I' Am Legend" has been adapted to a feature-length film three (3) times!!
The Last Man on Earth:
In 1964, Vincent Price starred as Dr. Robert Morgan (rather than "Neville") in The Last Man on Earth (the original title of this Italian production was L'Ultimo Uomo della Terra).
The Omega Man
In 1971, a far different version appeared as The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston (as Robert Neville) and Anthony Zerbe. Matheson had no influence on the screenplay for this film.
I am Legend
2007, Will Smith Stars, this movie also deviates from the original novel.
There is also a 4th fim (Went direcdt to DVD) which is also based on the book "I am Legend" called: "I Am Omega"!
