Simon Pegg is Givin' it All He's Got in Star Trek
Filed under: Classics, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Has there ever been a set more tightly guarded than J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot?Even Eric Bana was twitchy and guarded on Jay Leno about his shaved head, as if we don't already know who he's playing.
I respect it. It's nice when everything isn't spoiled right off the bat, but it doesn't seem as though your actors should fear you.
But Empire managed to get Simon Pegg, who's playing that famous Scottish engineer, to talk a bit. He revealed he had finished his scenes and that he thinks the movie is going to be "fantastic." A Star Trek geek himself, the biggest moment for him was "just being there on the Enterprise, it was incredible."
It should hearten any Star Trek fan to hear Pegg's devotion to the original Scotty, James Doohan. "Everything is just a tribute to James Doohan and it's his role. I'm just very honoured to be able to step into his shoes. I just hope I do him proud." He's borrowing his wife's "merry [Scottish] accent" for the part, but isn't at liberty to say whether she's a Highlander, a Lowlander or of that special Glasgow variety. "I'll get sued," insists Pegg. (That means it is Glasgow and fans will be angered. Just kidding. Now I'll be sued.)
Star Trek will be released May 8th, 2009. And we'll all be sued for talking about it until then! Why, this post could be yanked before any of you read it. . .

It is the Glasgow variety, apparently:

Nothing whatsoever -- I think they are lovely. I was just picturing Star Trek fans bursting a blood vessel trying to decipher it. :P
I rather think Scotty should be from Glasgow, especially if played by Pegg.

I don't know why I haven't seen this reported anywhere but I'll post it here in case anyone is interested.
The Star Trek: New Voyages internet fan series is having a premiere screening of one of their episodes on March 29th in LA to try and bump up publicity for a Star on the Walk of fame for Walter Koenig, who apears in the episode. The creator of the series, James Cawley (who also has a cameo role in the new Star Trek movie), has worked out a groundbreaking deal with JJ Abrams and Paramount to preimere the new trailer and poster for the new Star Trek film at this event. This is a big deal and yet I've seen no reports on it.

Actually, Doohan did an Aberdeen accent, but I'll bet no one notices the difference outside of the Highlands. Pegg should do something with Doohan's missing finger (courtesy of paratrooper duty on D Day).

Fortunately, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Pegg. on the set back in February. Watching him play the part of Scotty was a real gift and something that I will never forget. Simon says that he will play the part as a tribute to my Father and after seeing him in action, I must say that my Father would be proud to pass the torch to such a fine actor. Simon did a great job and we are honored that he is filling my father’s space boots.

I think it is great that Chris has e-mailed saying he has met Simon and is happy with the way he played the role. I am a great fan of Simon's work so far, I hope he manages the Scottish accent. Good luck with that. (p.s. I am Scottish and I guess we will allow some leeway for a Sassenach.
