Terminator IV Changes Names

A rose by any other name, the sages tell us, would smell as sweet. In that spirit, Coming Soon has a story noting that the McG-helmed, Christian Bale-led fourth film in the Terminator franchise, previously known as Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, will now have a wholly different title. It will, of course, still be a wholly unnecessary extension tacked on to the first two films; it will still be directed by McG; it will still have almost nothing to do with James Cameron's original vision for the films; it will lack Arnold Schwarzenegger; however, it will not be called Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. No replacement title has yet been announced. Currently slated for release May 2009, Terminator IV will ostensibly kick off a three-film series detailing the man-machine war that's the backbone of the Terminator films; Christian Bale (Rescue Dawn, Batman Begins) will star as the adult John Connor alongside newcomer Sam Worthington (Who, amusingly enough, is also scheduled to appear in ... James Cameron's Avatar). And yet, new name or not, I have almost no enthusiasm for this project.
Will you check Terminator IV out when it lands in May 2009, or does the cash-hungry smell of desperation and futility that lingers about this whole idea put you off?

This movie would definitely be a stupid excuse to throw a hundred million dollars into a special fx extravaganza IF NOT for Christian Bale. That man can do no wrong, so I have faith that this movie will be the awesome futuristic war film that I was hoping to see after T2. We'll see.

yup, I had ZERO interest in this until Bale was attached to it.
Then again, it could just be another Reign of cra... err.. Fire.

No surprises there then. I always did think it was moronic to lead with anything other than "Terminator:...". Salvation really was wholly unnecessary.

Christian Bale is set to play a very small role in the 4th film, but will be more prominent in the follow-on #5 & #6.
I love the franchise, but McG may possibly have been the worst possible selection.

Hmm, now I'm wishing I hadn't used "possibly" & "possible" in the same sentence. I really McG'd that one...

matt, how is Bale's role small if he's been cast as John Connor? As far as I've heard, that's the case. And I can't see how he could play Connor and not be the star of the film.

Fortunately for every other film in 2009 Avatar will come out in December, 'cause it's clearly going to blow away pretty much every other blockbuster that year has to offer.

The TV shows have been surprisingly good, I wasn't expecting much but I thing they are well related to the films and very entertaining. I think with a good write up this could be worth the watch and yes, Bale is the man...

This new Terminator movie would be great..if
Gov. Schwarzenegger were in it..for the simple fact
He could donate the money from the film to his
California treasury, that could really make a differents.

Christian Bale is careful in what he selects. Good role after good role. He lends a ton of credibility to the film despite its director. Bale is worth the trip to the theater.

It doesn't put me off. There's still a lot of story left to tell there, and I'm glad they're going ahead with it. I'm not jumping up and down on my seat because McG is directing it, but I'm willing to give him a chance.

I've been digging the television show so I went out and bought all three Terminator movies. I actually liked most of T3, aside from how often the main characters don't RUN AWAY when they should. I've never shouted the words "just GO!" so often while watching a movie.
I'm hoping these new movies will be fun. That's all I spend my big screen movie money for: FUN. I only go to the movie theatres for special effect movies (non-special-effect movies and art films can wait for NetFlix). I'd pay to see these popcorn/special effect Terminator movies on the big screen even if Christian Bale wasn't in them. I've been following the story and I dig it so I'll keep the faith.
The Terminator movies are really just one long chase sequence with some sci-fi expositional background and plot points to explain why everyone's running and chasing.
The future war will be skulls, robots, lasers, explosions, and more explanational exposition. These aren't Shakespeare and they aren't high art. Chase and fight and fight and shoot and narrate and chase and fight. Repeat as necessary.
McG would have to REALLY screw up #4 for me to not see #5 and #6 in the theatres (that includes second-run). That being said, a good solid script would be a welcome surprise.
And personally, I don't care if Arnold is in these or not. I think it would be a funny cameo to show Arnold as the person on whom the T-101 was based (or even Robert Patrick or Kristanna Loken as the human models for the T-1000 or the T-X) but I'm otherwise done with Arnold-as-Terminator.
Rock On, Sci-Friends!
