Charlize Theron is Lady Vengeance!?

I'm not quite sure how I missed this, but there is an interesting bit of news coming by way of Boston.com this week. In an interview with Charlize Theron, they discussed her current plans, and the upcoming Sleepwalking, but that's not all. On the third page of the article, it says she will both produce and star in a remake of Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I guess they're either not into the movie, or were stopped from getting any further details, because that's all they say about it. Filthy teases. The original came out back in 2006, and with Charlize involved in the remake, I imagine it will keep what Martha Fischer described as "totally unexpected" "subtlety and tenderness." For those who aren't familiar with Chan-Wook's vengeance trilogy, this final film focuses on a teen girl who is forced to confess to a crime she didn't commit. She spends the next 13 years in prison, and is a model inmate known for her kindness. Once she gets out, however, her tune changes and she begins to put together the revenge she has been secretly plotting over the years. She's so determined, in fact, that it's all she cares about -- shrugging off everything around her as a distraction.
While not big on remakes, especially of really funky foreign films worthy of a viewing, I have to admit -- Charlize could probably knock this out of the ballpark. Could this be her Oscar win without "getting ugly?"

Hell, I'm just glad that hollywood is finally paying attention to the GOOD asian films instead of recycling all those horror movies.
I think Theron could do a phenomenal job with Lady Vengeance as well.

Bad idea. And I love Charlize.
They'll never have the guts to leave in the dog-murder either. Betcha.

Bummer . . . I knew it was a matter of time before they got to these. While I agree with the above comment that these are some of the best Asian flicks out there, they stand alone so well, and I'm a little disturbed that the remake machine now only needs a couple years on a film before it gets processed.

I would agree that it's too soon for a remake if the general movie going audience bothered to go see the originals.

Honestly, this was a great film already. Why does it need to be remade in to something that will probably ultimately be a worse movie overall. People in the US need learn to read, so they aren't scared by subtitles. Movies like this one are great because foreign movies are willing to take more chances than any american studio is willing to.
I'm sorry to those people that liked the departed, but infernal affairs was a vastly superior movie.
I agree with the commenter above, do not touch Oldboy

I like Sympathy, but if you're gonna do a remake, why not do Oldboy first? That one's the best of the trilogy.

please don't ever remake oldboy, it's perfect as it is
but regarding the article, the main character on lady vengeance DID commit the crime she's charge for, she's is forced to confess she did alone when in fact she helped the villian of the movie on the kidnapping but she was guilty anyway

No, she only helped kidnap the boy, she didn't kill the boy, which is what she went to prison for. This was made clear at numerous points in the movie, particularly the scene where she re-enacts the murder but needs the help of the detective to get the details right... and oh yeah, the scene where she explains why she went to jail.

the fact is that she was a criminal
she was also convicted of kidnapping not only murder, so she commited one of the two crimes she was charge for
and on the case that the guy behind of the kidnapping was caught she would also be convicted of murder even if she didn't actually do it
